Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

"I don't think FEMA was aware that the Superdome was a complete disaster because no one locally had bothered to tell them."

I am getting a feelin there is some massive CYA going on locally down there.

When I seen the Cop that Shep tried to interview just get in his car and drive away I get the idea that things are not rosey and alot of folks feel the finger of blame will get pointed their direction so they are trying to cover up this mess like a kitty in a litter box!

Who was the Genius that told everyone to go to the Super Dome when they had no logisitics to deal with 20,000 people that showed up there?

I was listening but the mike volume was way low. She said something about kicking us while we are down and she won't stand for it. Don't know if she was referring to the thugs or armchair quarterbacks.

Where the governor of LA is demanding an apology because she is offended that someone suggested not rebuilding NO?

Guess she's slamming Denny Hastert. He had a point about not rebuilding New Orleans in the same location using Federal Tax Dollars.

Someone should call in and ask JJ if he plans on going to the Superdome to lead the group on prayer.

ROFLMAO,,,

Check out #807.

That is what I was referring too, since you seem so skeptical. I did, however, piggyback my original post to the wrong person which I have since apologized for.

It's over for me. How about you? OK?

I've been saying I see all the signs of Rodney King Riots in what is happening. I think you have to live through these things at least once to have your antennae go up. I've lived through both Los Angeles Riots.

They weren't the first

Riots in Phila in 1964 when the Jewish Merchants ( the gougers of blacks "Sarcasm" ) were burned out on North Philly

Then the riots afte MLK was assasinated

Why the hell people think this is new or unexpected is beyond me

At work here in San Antonio we are taking up a collection for the refugees that are coming to Kelly AFB. I am bringing a load of children's books, clothes, and bedding. People are really motivated here in Texas to help out.

It's not racist, it's common sense. Single people on different sides, intact families in a different area.

Ya know, the Amish really have something there with the way they take care of each other. Maybe we've just become too dependent on the gov't to solve our problems and need to seriously start looking out for each other. I know I like it when people do it for me.

If that is really what she was mad about, she'll get no apology from me.

It just defies logic to build a large metropolitan city below sea level with water stacked above it on all sides.
