28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

I can't believe people actually voted for that guy.

I'd bet in the good times, he's a laugh a minute.

Jesse Jackson has arrived in Louisiana...

In other news, the sun set in the west tonight.

Cannot wait to see the usual crapola flow from the Godfather of the Race Hustler / Poverty Pimp coalition.

God knows, I wish Jesse were showing up to help - maybe volunteer to help clean up the mess in the Dome. But, he has other fish to fry.

Intimidated by whom? By a bluuond or by a 14 year old lookalike? Sounds like you are intimidated by my impression, are you Gretchen's mama? Maybe a fan of Bill H?

Well I guess there will be no shooting of looters after all (if Jesse Jackson's in town). What elected official could do that now, with all the liberal whiny PC fallout that would happen afterwards. I would hope Karl Rove is not giving that some reprehensible PC advice to you know who.

Doctors appealing for help

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Doctors at two public hospitals in New Orleans have called The Associated Press to plead for rescue. The physicians say they are nearly out of food and power and have been forced to move patients to higher floors to escape looters.

Doctor Norman McSwain says he and his colleagues at Charity Hospital have turned to The AP as a last resort. McSwain says he tried calling the mayor and the governor, using any “inside pressure” possible, to no avail.

McSwain says there’s minimal water. The food amounts to fruit bowl punch. The scene is similar at University hospital.

Another doctor, Lee Hamm, says somehow the two public facilities have been forgotten -- or ignored.

well your numbers are lower in Dallas than I read. www.nola.com had posted Govenor of Texas agreed to send 25K to Dallas. Reunion could not hold more than 10K. So I like your numbers better than mine. At least in Dallas.

There was a guy (refugee) with big expensive headphones and an IPOD screaming into the camera that they need "basic necessities" such as food and water.

The refugees are getting restless and are now breaking into local hotels. There were fat women complaining that they haven't ate in days and the refugees are throwing gang like signs at the camera and chanting.

We have created a class of people who cannot fend for themselves and who rely on the government for everything.

Thanks, just heard the last part of a replay of Nagin as he called a radio program. 870 WWL. He called for a moratorium on press conferences, used the gd word several times. Was really mad about no one being arrested, and yet seeing the gov on TV all the time. Wants something done now! Just wondering if anyone else heard the entire call.

This is the Mayor, right??

Seems like someone is snapping

I hope we in Houston aren't busing in New Orleans' problems.

Tom Delay seemed very upbeat that Houston area and Texas in general had such a great economy and so much room that they can handle 100,000 refugees with no problem.

Nothing yet, as the influx is still slow - probably less than 5,000 so far.

Oh, some guys were arrested for going in the womens shower.

But when there are 25,000+ and they get restless. . .
