OU shouldn't take too long answering questions
Enid News and Eagle ^ | 6 Oct 2005 | Enid News and Eagle

There still seem to be more questions than answers regarding last Saturday's explosion outside the University of Oklahoma's Memorial Stadium. According to law enforcement, Joel Henry Hinrichs III acted alone and was depressed when he strapped an explosive to himself, sat down 100 yards away from a stadium filled with 84,000 people and blew himself up.

University of Oklahoma President David Boren has made daily statements regarding the status of the investigation, the safety of students, faculty and fans and increased security measures that will be taken in the wake of the incident. He's also stated time and time again it appears there was no terrorist intent from Hinrichs or anyone he might have associated with.

Yet, this week we have learned Hinrichs attempted to buy a large quantity of ammonium nitrate at a local feed store. We have learned he had other explosive materials in his apartment, and we have learned his Muslim roommate and associates were held briefly by law enforcement immediately after the explosion.

It's clear the FBI, which is in charge of the investigation, is trying to be tight-lipped because they don't have all the answers. They can state they have no direct evidence "at this time" to support any reports Hinrichs was involved with terrorist organizations or he intended to do harm to the fans in the stadium.

They probably are doing the right thing by limiting their comments until they have confirmed answers to all their questions. But, the information that is being ferreted out by the media is starting to paint a disturbing picture. Why would Hinrichs try to buy large quantities of a known explosive material? What was his motive for committing the suicide in such a public and dramatic way? What kinds of associations has he been involved with recently and what were his political views?

We applaud Boren for the attention he has given the matter and his daily briefings regarding the status of the investigation. Yet, we also believe there are more layers to this story than are being publicly disclosed at this time.

We can be patient for a little awhile as the FBI does its job of investigating the situation. However, it's imperative the truth be presented in full as quickly as possible. And, the questions need to be answered sooner rather than later in order to best serve the OU students, faculty and the fans of its spectator sports.

So, the FBI is 'tight lipped'. Is is just me, or does this story eeriely remind anyone else of the DC Sniper story?

Young man, troubled ... etc, etc ... but this time, the name of the older man in Joel's life who was helping him w/ his ideas about purchasing that bomb material ... why, we don't hear a thing about him. There is no 'John Mohommed' named ... yet.

Instead, we're told Joel was 'technical' and 'acted alone'.

I'm especially interested of any references whatsoever of some kind of older man being recently involved in this kid's life.

This story, which until today, I had been watching w/ a kind of morbid fascination, has now become just flat out totally weird. There are truely ugly details that are going to come out ....

Good point......there are a lot of adult "advisors" in Norman. Guess what? The Islamic Center of Norman is not answering its phone (according to an account on a FR thread). Interesting, isn't it?

"Interesting, isn't it?"

In an arresting Jeffry Dalhmer kind of way, unfortunately, yes.

Where's Michael Savage and the rest of talk radio hosts?

I turned of Mike tonight shortly after his program began when he said that the NYC warning sounded to him like a smokescreen to boost Bush's ratings.

Hello, Mike. We already had a suicide bombing in this country that was treated as a local story only.

This in spite of it being in the same town where the 19th hijacker and Nick Berg crossed paths.

Lot of muslim/middle easten activity for one town in flyover country.

But let's blame it on pimple cream like we originally did for Charles Bishop/Bishra until we saw his OBL/9-11 praising suicide note.

Very well stated. The media blackout on this makes so little sense. Now the terrorist know they can do whatever they want out here and nothing happens that will be reported unless it is a major disaster.

This story should be front page, and headline news every night until the truth comes out. Neither FOX or CNN will give much time to this, it reveals a weakness in "homeland security".

Interesting that only a threat has MSM in a frenzy; here in OK someone actually tried to blow up a stadium with 84,000 people in it--and [[[crickets]]]

Well, the media is mostly located in NYC. They are only bothered about stuff that threatens them. Forget the folks in flyover country......to NYC-based MSM journos, 1 of them=1 million folks outside NYC. The MSM disgusts me....oops....there I go again repeating myself.

Having seen the disorder in New Orleans (poor communication) and again first hand while leaving Houston, there is no doubt that bureacracy will work to the evil doers advantage.

And if there is a communicable threat (biological), would we be told (apart from keeping people from leaving where they might spread it to farther regions).

I saw cities close their ramps to the passing traffic (sheriffs wouldn't let non-locals in for gas, food, supplies).

I don't speak for doing anything against government, I do speak for learning to be self-reliant because more often than not the policy seems to be CYA rather than looking out for the citizenry.

There was a notable absence of authority when I was on the highway for 22 hours (for a 3 hour tour). The radio information was lacking too. At press conferences the question was asked how long the trip was taking, while the authority figure said that such numbers were being noted he "didn't have those figures at hand". There were no gas updates (one field reporter's cellphone gave out before he gave listeners the thumbs up or down). We heard that the plan was to open the freeway both directions outbound only to hear them reverse that decision 8 hours later.

Sad but true.

I've tried to correct people on the left and on the right when they wrongly claim that we haven't been hit since 9-11.

There were the anthrax attacks (still unsolved, and if it wasn't Atta, then the culprit is still at large).

There was a mysterious plane explosion on take off.

There was the shoe bomber's near successful attempt.

There was the LAX Air Israel shooting.

There was Charles Bishop/Bishra crashing a stolen plane into a bank with a note praising OBL and the 9-11 attacks.

There was the DC sniper duo.

Then we have the attacks on our allies in Bali (Australian tourist targets), London, Madrid.

And don't forget the murder spree in Beslan that makes Columbine pale in comparison.

All "lone nuts". Just like this one.

"They can state they have no direct evidence "at this time" to support any reports Hinrichs was involved with terrorist organizations or he intended to do harm to the fans in the stadium."

With due respect to the FBI, he had a ticket for the game, and he tried to bring his backpack into the stadium more than once.

I heard Savage tonight too and was very disappointed.

I really thought he was sharper than that.

NYC - 53rd street subway station has been the scene of surveillance by middle eastern men taking pictures. A gossip columnist wrote about it. They were asked by a man what they were doing...one of the two went to go after the man who questioned them, but his partner stopped him.

The next day, 2 middle eastern men were again spotted taking pictures. The the Hilton Hotel Fire happened...over 100 guests evacuated.
