Freeper Lingo Reference Thread

Every once in a while I see Freeper lingo I don't understand and have to research to figure out the meaning/background.

Today, I thought it would be helpful for newbies (and 'seasoned' Freepers) to have a 'reference' for the lingo specifically related to FR (ie not stuff like LOL etc you can get everywhere else).

My intention is for this thread (and my profile page) to be that reference, in as much as it can be kept reasonably up to date.

I've just started to compile the terms today, so I'm sure there are massive gaps and omissions in the definitions/histories. Please fill them in!

Here's what I have right now:

IBTZ - In Before The Zot - term posted before the troll/disrupter gets booted
Zot - verb, to get kicked off FR in an undignified manner
Mod comment: See Coop's post #52 for correct definition of "Zot"
beeber (beeber like object) - see the thread that started it all: Would like freeper help (apologies to al baby)
stuned - misspelling of stunned - see beeber
hugh - misspelling of huge posted on a thread by an excited freeper.
series - misspelling of serious posted on a thread by an excited freeper.
BIOYAC - Texan freepism - Blow It Out Your A**, Cowboy
shower pictures - from an excited freeper saying they just got out of the shower on a breaking news thread about a possible terror event (it was determined the event was not terror related).
DUmmie (anything DU---) - Democratic Underground troll/disruptor
cowbell pictures - ??
ziggy - ??
spork weasel - ??

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Someday, maybe not today or tomorrow, but someday when your guard is down... I will get you for that.

There's my out. The next time I mangle a word and the spelling police jump me for it, I'll just tell them I was creating a new FReeperism.

I noticed Tijeras_Slim beat me by 4 1/2 minutes, but I also have this in my shortcuts and was looking at some of the ZOT pictures there.

Nope. Actually, the shower post was made by a woman whose husband was possibly on a flight that was in some kind of trouble in air. She said she was stepping into the shower and would check later. LOL

That is correct. It was not long after 9/11, and we were all a little tense. I believe the poster's husband was in the danger zone, and she up and decided to take a shower rather than wait for additional news. We were all shocked by her glibness.

I have no idea how ping got started here on FR, but I can only assume it was by someone who had been on the internet since the early days. Ping, is a program that you can run from the command line to find out if you can communicate with another computer. It sends a message to the other computer, and then returns the message back to you.

So ... if a Geek FReeper was on, and saw a message that they wanted to be able to review later, they could do that by "pinging" the thread, and therefore putting it in thier "My comments" section of thier membership (that is the return communication).

Bump, I imagine is similar, but probably comes from a Rush listener. Rush used to always refer to Bump music, which in his case is "Back to Ohio". When you hear that, you know the commercial is over and you are about to hear Rush again. So bumping a thread means putting it back in front of everyone's attention. Literally, with a new reply, it puts it back to the top of the "latest posts" thread. In short, it keeps the thread in a position of maximum visibility if a lot of people bump the thread.

If you "ping" (or bump, or put anything else in a comment) and send it to another Freepers name, it will show up in thier latest posts thread.

In recap, ping and bump both accomplish the same thing, they just come from Freepers with different backgrounds. Both are using the tools of Free Republic to either make it so that you or someone else can find the message again later easily, and so that other Freepers can see it as an active thread.

I'm guessing another misspelled word by an excited Freeper.

Misspelling of "scramble" by an excited noob, now residing perhaps in upper Zotland.

Actually, it's a bad Janet Reno impersonation.

Please give me the history on that one, if possible. I've seen it before and get the impression it is similar to the 'shower'/hugh/series thing.

the moose part is monty python, go watch "holy grail" opening credits. its peppered with moose commentary (a moose bit my sister once)
