Romney's "Faith of his Fathers" - His Church leaders speak out about Jesus Christ.
lds.org ^ | January, 2000 | LDS Church

After Thursdays speech by Romney on 'Faith in America', I thought I would share what he did not, nor should he have. This is what he believes about Jesus Christ. It's the statement by the leaders proclaimed to the world at the turn of the millennium, in January 2000.

==========================================================================

The Living Christ: The testimony of the Apostles of the LDS Church.

As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ two millennia ago, we offer our testimony of the reality of His matchless life and the infinite virtue of His great atoning sacrifice. None other has had so profound an influence upon all who have lived and will yet live upon the earth.

He was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, the Messiah of the New. Under the direction of His Father, He was the creator of the earth. “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). Though sinless, He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness. He “went about doing good” (Acts 10:38), yet was despised for it. His gospel was a message of peace and goodwill. He entreated all to follow His example. He walked the roads of Palestine, healing the sick, causing the blind to see, and raising the dead. He taught the truths of eternity, the reality of our premortal existence, the purpose of our life on earth, and the potential for the sons and daughters of God in the life to come.

He instituted the sacrament as a reminder of His great atoning sacrifice. He was arrested and condemned on spurious charges, convicted to satisfy a mob, and sentenced to die on Calvary’s cross. He gave His life to atone for the sins of all mankind. His was a great vicarious gift in behalf of all who would ever live upon the earth.

We solemnly testify that His life, which is central to all human history, neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded on Calvary. He was the Firstborn of the Father, the Only Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world.

He rose from the grave to “become the firstfruits of them that slept” (1 Corinthians 15:20). As Risen Lord, He visited among those He had loved in life. He also ministered among His “other sheep” (John 10:16) in ancient America. In the modern world, He and His Father appeared to the boy Joseph Smith, ushering in the long-promised “dispensation of the fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10).

Of the Living Christ, the Prophet Joseph wrote: “His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah, saying:

“I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father” (D&C 110:3–4).

Of Him the Prophet also declared: “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!

“For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—

“That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (D&C 76:22–24).

We declare in words of solemnity that His priesthood and His Church have been restored upon the earth—“built upon the foundation of … apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:20).

We testify that He will someday return to earth. “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5). He will rule as King of Kings and reign as Lord of Lords, and every knee shall bend and every tongue shall speak in worship before Him. Each of us will stand to be judged of Him according to our works and the desires of our hearts.

We bear testimony, as His duly ordained Apostles—that Jesus is the Living Christ, the immortal Son of God. He is the great King Immanuel, who stands today on the right hand of His Father. He is the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come. God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son.

“Since you ignore facts, once again I will state that plural marriage is illegal as well as banned by the Church. What is your problem with the facts?”

Perhaps you need to look into Mormon history and the reaction to polygamy by the United States Supreme Court.
Again, FACTS are there for you too!

The reason pologamy was “banned” is because Christians didn’t want polygamy in the United States - it is unChristian to Joesph Smith’s chagrin. Joseph Smith and the others are nothing more than false prophets. It’s a “religion” that “evolves”. Hopefully it will “evolve” back to the Bible and away from these “rewritten” versions penned by Mormon false prophets.

Hey, I’m not surprised that a young teen, Smith, hormones racing would WANT polygamy to be “Christian”. I do know what it’s not Christian and as much as you don’t want to hear it - it is part of Mormon history and quietly continuing.

As I also mentioned earlier, polygamy is winked at in Utah and still goes on within the Mormon religion. In fact one was just sent to jail for molesting girls etc.. Deny that too! As always, you maybe believe whatever you wish! You can even believe in the Tooth Fairy - it's okay with me.

Let's not forget that He was the brother of Satan

and

God had sexual relations with Mary to conceive Christ.

Just two other minor details missing from the above that the Mormon Church teaches.

I have long found the hostility towards Mormonism remarkable. Why should I care about a candidate's religion? Specifically, why should I care that Romney is a Mormon?

For the first time during this campaign, I heard a candidate who spoke passionately, coherently, and with conviction about their religious beliefs, their belief in faith, their respect for the faith of others, and clearly and unequivocally and, in some instances, emotionally, answer the questions that I have heard day in and day out about his religion.

His speech was refreshing and, yes, presidential. And it was from the heart, something that is sadly lacking in this campaign of soundbite speechifying and electioneering.

I will also, for the record, mention that I find the rantings of folks decrying Mormonism as somehow defective, and that only their own beliefs are true and correct, to be suspicious, at the very least. And I will qualify that by mentioning that I am Jewish.

I would have no hesitation in voting for Romney if he is the candidate and I, further, have no hesitation in ignoring the stupidity of those foaming at the mouth about his religion.

The guy that was recently sent to jail was not a Mormon. If you continue to believe he is, then YOU believe in the tooth fairy.

Lot's of bad things are said about the LDS faith, most of it innacurate or out of context.

LDS say that I will burn in hell because I fail to worship Joe Smith.

That does it for me.

Not picking a fight here, just curious about your self-description. Saying you're a non-Christian is broad and ambiguous, to say the least. Why not identify what you are instead of that which you are not?

I'm an agnostic, I suppose. My parents were also not religious. I was under the impression that Christians believed Christ would reveal himself to his followers, which was why I asked.

>> Can you provide a link, please, to an official source (e.g. a SCOTUS ruling) that describes how and when "the U.S. Supreme Court deemed polygamy UNCHRISTIAN and made it against the law"?

> Reynolds v. United States, 98 U.S. 145 (1878), was a Supreme Court of the United States case that held that religious duty was not a suitable defense to a criminal indictment.

Yes, agreed. I know about and understand the ruling. My question to nmh was because nowhere in that ruling do I see anything that says "polygamy is deemed un-Christian and therefore is illegal" (his contention).

Instead, the ruling is devoid of reference to any one religion (save the one whose practice was being targeted (Mormonism)) because the whole point was that the ruling was NOT based on the tenets of a different religion (e.g. Christianity), but rather the general benefit of society, as you correctly stated.

Revelation 22:18 “ I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God shall add to him the plagues which are written in this book.” Mormons consider the Scriptures as flawed and the Book Of Mormon as a more worthy source of inspiration. Mormonisn is a CULT. LDS claims to be Christian....this is a ruse to make them more acceptable to inquirers who are sucked into their culture. I have a problem with Joseph Smith and his magical glasses “Urim and Thummin” which allowed him to decipher the magical tablets. The Christian God does not use magic! Mormonism is a cult! Romney is a good man. He is not God’s man. The main problem with Mormonism is that their adherents will because of their belief system not find salvation and eternal life in Heaven.

Mormonism seems to fit the description by Paul in 2 Corinthians:

or if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
2 Corinthians 11:3-5

and later in the chapter

3For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

The Angel Moroni of the Mormon religion is called ‘The Angel of Light.’ Seems pretty clear to me.

I simply don’t believe the signatures of a group of Mormon corporate types has any special revelatory power. You might as well send a Hallmark greeting card.

“The guy that was recently sent to jail was not a Mormon. If you continue to believe he is, then YOU believe in the tooth fairy.”

No. He is a fundamentalist Mormon going by the teachings of the founder of Mormonism. You may want to go back to Mormon history to understand and accept what they were taught to believe. Christians didn’t want polygamy and why the United States Supreme Court banned polygamy - Mormonism is not Christian and violated Christian principles.

Fellow Mormons on FR will try to wiggle out of this by occasionally one will be honest .... Mormons don’t believe in the Trinity. They like Christ but believe Christ achieved godhood and you can too! It’s a works driven religion. They also believe that some who live an exclempraty life will get a PLANET with lots of VIRGINS. None of this is Christian. None of it. It’s a perverted imitation of Christianity.

““Since you ignore facts, once again I will state that plural marriage is illegal as well as banned by the Church. What is your problem with the facts?””

Please tell me which of your prophets declared that polygamy was good.

Please tell me which of your prophets declared later, to gain statehood, that all of a sudden polygamy was bad.

Please tell me which of your prophets declared that non-whites couldn’t attain the “priesthood.”

Please tell me which of your prophets in the 1960’s declared that non-whites could attain the “priesthood.”

Please then explain to me which ones were false prophets, since the biblical definition of a prophet is that he never prophesies falsely.

“By their fruits ye shall know them.”

Please tell me why there are some self-declared Mormons even now who claim polygamy is good. They claim they are just following the prophetical declarations of Joseph Smith.

All relgion is invalid. The only religion God ever recognized was the Law of Moses . He tore that up the day Christ died and hasn’t had anything to do with religion since.

Christianity? Ah! It is The Way. The way of life, not a religion.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. “ - Matthew 7:13 The majority are following religions that will get them nowhere good.

The next two verses are revealing, too, if you interpret “false prophets” as the founders or religions.

I never understood how plural marriage was supposed to work. If practiced widely there wouldn't be enough females to go around.

Kinda like in China where they have a girl shortage for an entirely different reason.

One's enough for me. Who needs more than one mother-in-law anyway?

You are exactly correct. There aren't enough females to go around, so "lost boys"
are unceremoniously dumped by polygamous Mormon sects. You can read more
about this terrible practice here.
