The Homeland Security Department today released the 284-page final rule for implementing the Real ID Act that would standardize the handling of personal information for driver’s licenses.
The release of the long-awaited final implementation regulations — the law was passed in 2005 — is expected to spur contracting activity on the program after months of uncertainty as federal officials were crafting the rule.

The final rule also requires a 2-Dimensional Bar Code Machine Readable Zone, which DHS said is already used by 46 jurisdictions.
Under the Real ID Act of 2005, states must meet new rules for collecting, verifying, storing and publishing personal information related to driver’s licenses, and they must share the personal information of license holders with other states. The law generated substantial controversy due to its high cost and possible risk of identity theft and privacy loss.
Many systems integrators and IT contractors are preparing to assist state motor vehicle departments in upgrading their infrastructures to incorporate Real ID requirements. Many state administrators have been postponing those improvements until the Real ID rule was released, Grant said.

I like it. I long ago realized such a card is the only solution to the illegal immigrant problem. There is not and never will be a reliable method for identifying illegals who don’t want to be found. But we CAN identify those of us who are citizens and/or here legally. By self identifying and documenting, we can cull illegals out of the workforce by default.
By example...let’s say you’re in charge of security at Fort Knox. You wouldn’t issue documents to random passersby saying they can’t enter. You don’t know who they are anyway. No, you would issue ID’s to those who ARE authorized to enter. You can identify them and issue the proper documents.
I know all the arguments against it...flame away. But please admit that it IS the only way to solve the problem.
This craps makes me want to vote for Ron Paul. Instead of punishing the innocent, they should go after the guilty and use profiling. It’s getting to the point that I’m sorry I voted for the current President although the alternative isn’t any better.

I was thinking the same thing recently. I think the answer is many people. Unfortunately, my dad is one of those people who often denies or disbelieves truth and believes lies. It's hard to even have a conversation with him about politics or religion, because he and I disagree on just about everything. (he's an atheist) At some point, it seems almost hopeless to try to change some people's minds, but what we can do is pray.
YES! Prayer is so potent satan does everything he can to stop us from praying and/or to neuter or compromise our praying by various ways.
That’s another reason that walking with God according to His priorities is so important . . . that our paryers be more potent.

This is pure crap, America is fading faster than I ever expected it to.
How in the world could a Free Nation let this happen?
By believing fearmongering and being manipulated into trading liberty for "security."
By electing phonies who pay lip service to the constitution but keep us on the same old path towards socialism/authoritarianism.
By not realizing that both parties have been pretty much taken over by globalists who are beholden to other interests, despite their great sounding words and promises to limit the size of government, etc. And because of that lack of realization of what has been happening - being manipulated into "holding one's nose" and constantly voting for the "lesser of two evils" - which still brings evil.
By not caring enough about character, genuineness and principles, which leads to putting crooks in power and the destruction of our freedom. By not caring much about corruption. Or worse - ridiculing and trying to shame people who dare to question government corruption or expose cover-ups, by calling them unpatriotic or "crazy." Whether the scoffers do that out of sincere, staunch partisanship to a leader or party, or whether it's for some other, less honest reason... the end result is that people in power get away with all sorts of things, because we let them.
So to sum it up, it's because we don't take the advice of the founders to be vigilant, informed, and to know our rights and not be too trusting that the government always has our best interests at heart. And it's because we don't always learn from history, so history tends to repeat itself.
The good news is, there are people who truly care about protecting freedom and preserving our God-given rights, and championing justice, even when what they're saying is unpopular. So there is hope, but it's better if we can solve these issues while we still have freedom and some honest people in power. If not, it can get to the point of no return.

Wait until they make it a matter for "Homeland Security" and a federal law. They'll threaten to withold federal security funds to states that don't go along with the plan. Imagine states like New York or New Jersey or California, or Governors like Ed "Spendell" foregoing federal money.
Notice that none of the so-called “front-runner” GOP candidates are addressing this crap. Not even Fred Thompson.
Maybe they could address this. I find it odd that Mexico is getting new id cards the same day that Chertoff announced ours.
It looks like Mexico will have our data base. It will make it easier for kidnappings, mordidas, ect.

I noticed that. That's not too surprising, since they are all pretty much a continuation of the status-quo. But I am a bit amazed that only 8 Republicans voted against it. That makes me feel a bit nauseous. People need to wake up, and quick.
Thanks! And I agree with almost everything you said... Well-put. As far as America coming to an end, I haven't lost all hope yet, but I think we're getting very close. The most amazing thing is, how so many people are still supporting the very people who have helped to get us to this point. (I might get lambasted for saying that, but I'm being honest) The only certain hope that I have is that there is a higher power who will ultimately prevail.
Well, why give up my card-carrying liberty if not for some greater purpose? This whole thing stinks. If Chertoff wants a Federal ID he should just say so. And cite the benefits and downsides of the program.
I'm not so happy ;that my fall-back position is carrying a PASSPORT in my own country.

Canada was VERY easy to enter in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Commonweath came home to roost. And there were BUSLOADS of Indians and Pakis coming to Buffalo NY, for "shopping". The buses arrived in the USA packed with humanity and left empty. Somehow, these aliens found homes in the shopping malls of Erie county, New York.
