Socially Liberal, Fiscally Conservative, Such a Thing?

Posted on 12/07/2009 7:56:22 AM PST by MNDude

I've heard many politicians and individuals claim to be "Socially Liberal, Fiscally Conservative", but I've seen little evidence anyone behaving this way.

It seems like those who gave themselves this title have gone alone with the President's stimulus.

I'm curious if anyone give give some examples of any politicians who really is Socially Liberal but Fiscally Conservative.

No. It’s a copout.

I’ll be interested to see any examples as well.

We in Houston have a candidate running for mayor who claims to be the “conservative answer” in her ads. The ad is, of course, with regards to her opponent’s spending habits.

She’s a lesbian, so I’m PRETTY sure she’s not a social conservative. =P

"Socially Liberal, Fiscally Conservative, Such a Thing?"

Well, here's my take on that...

They say that "socially liberal=fiscally conservative is the hallmark of libertarians.

But the libertarians I know - including my son - vote for the most fiscally irresponsible person I've ever known, barack - the kenyan - obama. To me, that totally blows the fiscal conservatism theory away.

Now, if they are "socially liberal", that means that they are all for the plethera of social programs championed by the left, which means billions and billions of taxpayer dollars - including theirs - lost in fraud, and cheating...again, not too fiscally conservative.

So therefore, I think people who claim to be "socially liberal and fiscally conservative" (libertarians) are simply liberals who want to spend everyone else's money, but not their own.

Just sayin....

Socially Liberal, Fiscally Conservative ...

IMHO, that describes many establishment GOPer's (Steele, Newt, McCain, Graham, Voinivich, Collins, Snowe, Romney, etc., with even some apologists here) [see Scozzafava-NY 2009], who think they can jettison social conservatives and still win elections.

It's a theoretical impossibility.

To be socially liberal is to use the power of the state to encourage destructive behaviors like drug abuse and sexual promiscuity. The social liberal protects people from the natural consequences of their immorality. This often involves subsidies, which are expensive. The expenses increase dramatically over time as more people respond to the incentives that the social liberal set up by indulging in more destructive behavior.

The socially liberal state can never be cheap. Any politician who joins the left in demolishing conventional morality and promises tight budgets at the same time is a liar.

Beat me to it. This is the basic Libertarian philosophy.

I disagree with it. Social Conservatism is indispensable. I will not support someone who is socially liberal.

If you had a category for Socially Liberal, Fiscally Conservative, and Mentally Unsound, then yes.

Social liberalism will inevitably result in fiscal liberalism... why? How do you think they fund all of those feel-good, socially liberal programs?

Definitions are important. A social liberal thinks that wealth should be “spread around” through government programs like welfare, et al. How can that view be reconciled with a fiscal conservative who recognizes personal property beyond the purview of the state? It can’t.

Yes, they are called Rockefeller Republicans. Back when Republicans were permanent losers, they controlled the party. When the Christian Conservatives gave up on the Dems, they took over the Republican Party. Some called them the "Silent Majority". This coalition made the Party more competitive and were able to win some elections. Many in the Party feel the Christians should sit down and shut up, but this would make the Repubs a permanent loser again. I remember going to the Texas State convention when Allen Keyes was a candidate and some Republicans rose and left saying, "If I wanted a sermon, I would go to church", as he explained the evils of abortion and how none of us were safe if we were allowed to murder the most innocent of us.

As we see today, the state has been allowed to murder Terri Shiavo, and now, as you will soon see, they will kill whom ever costs them too much money to keep alive. A Democrat can't connect murder of babies to murder of your mother in their limited mental capacity. Only Christians with discernment seem to be able to do that, understanding the evil in men's hearts.

An example of this Republican state of mind would be Rudy Guliani or Bloomberg. They are fine on taxes, but libertarian on moral issues. The lesson from all this is, Chritian conservatives must remain in control of the Party or the Repubs will return to obscurity. There are many in the Party that can't stand us, but they will put up with us to get their tax cut.

Me too. I don’t support ghey marriage, open borders, legalized drugs, legalized prostitution, loose pornography laws, a weak military, or secular values.

Traditional conservative all the way!

You beat me to it.

You can’t be behaviorially permissive without consequences.
Funny, that. Breaking the Creator’s laws has “natural” consequences. But I digress.

“Social liberals” see consequences as a restriction on behavior, so they insist that everyone else alleviate those consequences,

which causes the fiscal side to also become socialist/liberal.

'Socially liberal, fiscally conservative....."

These phrases are mutually antithetical. You can't be both at the same time.

A prime example of one who stays on top and gets away with this kind of blather is Bill O'Reilly who is socially liberal, fiscally conservative, socially conservative, fiscally liberal, conservatively conservative and liberally liberal all the while he's looking out for YOU!

RE :”Fiscally Conservative” republicans?

What does that mean? Most of them claim that. Repubicans spend like democrats. But we got many socially conservative republicans(some here) that like big government too, as long as a republican is in power and their taxes dont go up. Short sighted. I call this the Bush/McCain fans/

Haha.

Socially liberal would be people who don't have issues with a woman's right to choice.

Socially liberal would be people who feel marijuana should be legalized (saving millions in the penal system).

Socially liberal believe in a person's right to commit suicide without government interference.

Socially liberal would believe in every consenting adult's right to marry.

The social conservatives seem to be the people who are able to pick and choose where and when the government is involved in other peoples lives. The social liberal wants them out most of the time. To me it's the social conservative that is the hypocrite.
