U.S. Bishops’ final plea to Congressmen: Do not pass pro-abortion health care bill
Catholic News Agency ^ | Mar 20, 2010 / 09:41 pm

Washington D.C., Mar 20, 2010 / 09:41 pm (CNA).- In a final, urgent plea to prevent the passage of the current form of the Senate health care bill, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) on Saturday evening sent a letter to Congressmen asking them to vote “no.”

“For decades,” the letter says, “the United States Catholic bishops have supported universal health care. The Catholic Church teaches that health care is a basic human right, essential for human life and dignity.”

“Our community of faith,” the bishops continue, “provides health care to millions, purchases health care for tens of thousands and addresses the failings of our health care system in our parishes, emergency rooms and shelters. This is why we as bishops continue to insist that health care reform which truly protects the life, dignity, consciences and health of all is a moral imperative and an urgent national priority.”

Nevertheless, they add, “we are convinced that the Senate legislation now presented to the House of Representatives on a ‘take it or leave it’ basis sadly fails this test and ought to be opposed.”

Our shepherds have remained silent too long. May the Mercy of God (not the justice we deserve) grant dreams to each member of Congress to awaken their consciences and give them a vision of the future they are crafting for this nation and the courage to act on that knowledge.

The sad part is that if they had dealt fairly with the republicans, they could have passed a reasonable and centrist health care plan that could get 75% of the vote in congress. This is an awful bill, good bills don’t need this type of force to get them passed.

Too bad they haven't been and still aren't against a terrible, socialistic idea. Unfortunately, the Catholic bishops by their silence or in some cases their complicit assistance in helping Obama ascend to the presidency, must take a lot of the blame for the position were in now.

I say this as a devout Catholic, who is extremely disgusted that there weren't more bishops who vocally took a stand in the 2008 election, when it could have really meant something. Many of them knew full well they were approving of one of the most pro-death politicians there has ever been.

This latest stand may be too little, too late.

Only God's mercy can save us from this awful bill now.

(“For decades,” the letter says, “the United States Catholic bishops have supported universal health care. The Catholic Church teaches that health care is a basic human right, essential for human life and dignity.” )

Once you’re ok with something being imposed by the Government, you have no control over what else will be imposed. The Catholic Church should have known better than to support socialism.

Yes, this is potentially asking for a monster. It would seem a more Christian (and scripturally faithful) thing to say that all Christians should do what they personally can, with their own wealth, to help the needy with respect to health care (and other things). But wishing socialism on a society is bad juju.

If it is a basic human right, will America pick up the tab for the rest of the world?

We haven't stopped slavery, which is still practiced, especially in Moslem countries, but lets make sure we bankrupt America to pass this atrocious bill to pretend we have health care reform, when it is actually a government takeover of one sixth of our economy.

The government is going to decide who gets the resources of health care in this country, in other words who lives or dies.

Even if they took out the abortion issue, this bill would still allow the government to decide who gets treated and who doesn't. That's evidently okay with the bishops. When the Terri Schindler case came up and the bishops didn't speak up in her defense to stop Florida from murdering an innocent woman by refusing to allow her the right to food and water, I knew this was the beginning of something evil.

Old people, children with genetic problems, anyone the government deems unfit will eventually be refused treatment. Mothers who have imperfect babies will be coerced into aborting their babies.

This is so in your face, surely the bishops will act against any politician who votes yes and claims to be Catholic.
Will this finally be the tipping point?

The bishops have lost all credibility. The left, which used CCHD to get themselves elected via ACORN and the like, mocks their very “office”. The right sees them as pathetic statists. As believing Catholic, I am ashamed of them.

Those that voted for the Obamacare are not Christians.

I think they would rather worship Allah.

I know Obama does.

If the bishops really cared about universal health care they would use CCHD collections to buy health insurance for poor Catholics. Instead, they use CCHD to help elect Democrats. Jesus said something about what happens when you try to serve two masters.

At least we have that small mercy. The gov't needs to get out of the way of the private sector in health care. Gov't screwed it up in the first place, gov't can only 'fix' it by withdrawing from the sector.

the Bishop’s words have no teeth.

They allow any Catholic to endorse killing babies and never throw them out. Ever.

Pelosi should have been excommunicated long ago. Since she wasn’t, they effectively communicated that it really doesn’t matter.
