Senator Toomey Betrays Gun Owners [ACT NOW!]
Gun Owners of America ^ | April 10, 2013 | GOA Staff

Posted on 04/10/2013 4:37:40 PM PDT by forty_years

Urgent action required. It is urgent that every gun owner call their Senators today and demand that they oppose the "See a Shrink, Lose your Guns" sell-out bill that is being authored by Senators Pat Toomey (R) and Joe Manchin (D) - but which also has Chuck Schumer's fingerprints all over it. Call senators immediately at 202-224-3121 and click here to send pre-written or free-form emails to senators about the Toomey/Manchin "compromise" (scroll to bottom to send).

See a Shrink, Lose your Guns. The anti-gun "ranters" have spent the last week telling us that Republican Senators can't filibuster Harry Reid's gun control bill; that they can't cut off debate to a bill they haven't seen yet. "Let the bill come up," they say. "We need to see the bill" before Senators can vote against cloture to proceed to it.

Well, we've seen the Toomey-Manchin-Schumer sell-out, and it's worse than the Feinstein gun ban, which will reportedly be tied to it and offered simultaneously in a Senate procedure known as an "amendment tree."

Toomey and Manchin will claim that their bill only covers "gun show sales" and Internet sales. But if you've ever talked about your gun and /or let it be known you'd like to sell or buy a gun on the Internet, this language covers you. If you advertise your gun in the church bulletin and the bulletin is put on the Internet, you're covered.

The only exemption is for sales that are sold exclusively by word of mouth. The increased number of background checks would likely exacerbate the system breakdowns (inherent to NICS) which have shut down gun shows over and over again. It would mean that Americans who were illegally denied firearms because their names were similar to other people's would effectively be barred from owning a gun. (We would never tolerate such delays for voting rights or other freedoms that we are guaranteed.)

And for those Republicans who think they're going to be able to offer their useless amendments, guess what? Reid is reportedly going to use a procedure to block out all amendments (called an "amendment tree"). And there are plenty of Senators standing in line to make sure that the Senate doesn't give "unanimous consent" to let those Republicans offer their amendments.

So if you live in a rural area, you're effectively barred from selling or buying a gun - or it at least becomes very, very difficult.

Incidentally, the Toomey-Manchin-Schumer "national registry" language is full of holes. There will be a national gun registry as a result of this sell-out.

But that's not the worst part. Under an amendment in the bill to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), you could have your guns taken away because your private shrink thinks you're "dangerous" and could send your name directly to the FBI Instant Check system.

Did you think it was terrible that 150,000 military veterans had been added into the NICS system because they'd seen a VA shrink about their PTSD? Well guess what? Now it's going to happen to the rest of the population ... by the millions!

And the next step, of course, will be to begin to sue psychiatrists that don't send every single patient's name to the Instant Check system, and to make sure that their lives are ruined if they don't send a patient to NICS and anything goes wrong.

The bottom line: "See a shrink; lose your guns."

All of this will reportedly be on an amendment tree with the Feinstein gun ban and magazine bans.

Repeal of gun owner protections. In addition, Toomey no doubt unintentionally agreed to repeal one of the most important protections for gun owners that was included in the 1986 McClure-Volkmer Act - the provision that would allow you to take an unloaded, locked-up gun through states like New York without being stopped. Under a new subsection (c), the Toomey-Manchin-Schumer bill would require you to "demonstrate" to the satisfaction of New York police where you were coming from and where you are going to. And, if you don't do that to their satisfaction, they can arrest you.

Please keep in mind, nothing in this bill would have stopped Newtown dirtbag from killing his mother and taking the firearms that she owned and perpetrating the horrible crimes that he committed.

Nothing is this bill would actually make children safer at schools. There is nothing that will actually keep bad guys from stealing or illegally acquiring guns, but there's plenty that will threaten our gun rights!

ACTION: Contact your two senators immediately. Tell them the "see a shrink; lose your guns" sellout is even worse than the Feinstein gun ban which will reportedly be on the same amendment tree with it. Distribute this alert far and wide.

Time is short, so if you call - at 202-224-3121 - you may click below to see the pre-written letter and use the contents to help direct your comments.

That is the summary I have been reading all day. It is not the exact language. What is defined as a transfer isn't stated.

We don't know if there is an exception for law enforcement action. Does a policeman that wants someone to surrender a firearm have to wait for an FFL holder to show up and run an NICS check before the firearm is handed to the officer so they can both void an illegal firearm transfer? We need to read the exact language to find out.

Now, you can talk an unloaded rifle in a locked case to an airport so you can fly to say Alaska for a hunt. The airline representative at checked baggage examines the firearm to make sure it is unloaded, then makes sure you have locked the case, then takes possession of the firearm and has baggage handlers put it in checked baggage within the plan. If not exempted, the hunter, the airline representative and the baggage handlers could be making an illegal firearms transfer.

Without the exact language we don't know what is happening.

So you have all these years of Arlen Specter, and you think that he and this new guy are interchangeable? That nothing was gained in defeating Specter?

if the Libertarian Party was not out to lunch on immigration and foreign policy, I'd join them.

Some of us also have problems with their partial birth abortion, homosexualizing the military, gay marriage and polygamy stuff, and more.

Sorry, I do not want offend or insult you. I wanted Specter out, I was furious at Cornyn for supporting him. I like Toomey. Maybe something was gained from 2011 and 2012, but overall, I can only include nothing of substance was gained.

I’ve never paid much attention to Tommey, and mostly took everyone’s word that he was better than Specter (although I did take an occasional look at him to refresh my memory of who he was over the years), who I despise, I assume that Toomey has to be better than Specter though.

I have been in some arguments today with people who preferred Specter and were glad that Santorum was supporting him (Specter) during the 2010 cycle, which I find kind of mind blowing, regardless of today’s news.

Until today, I would have thought differently, but now I can only conclude they aren't interchangeable. Specter was better.

Toomey gave up to the Democrats only the only issue still viable for Republicans, and the only issue it's publicly acceptable to disagree with Democrats. If he can't even stand up to Democrats on that issue, what good is he? There is nothing left. That's the whole ball of wax. And Toomey is now to the left of Dianne Feinstein.

The thing is, Specter was bad. But at least on a few issues he would strongly stand up to Democrats. He would even do it on things that would make him unpopular with that side of the aisle. Toomey just came out as not even being able to stick up to Democrats on the one issue he could. I am shocked, but I have to give an honest opinion: this makes Toomey 100% worthless. And that's before the fact that Toomey made himself Se. Schumer's secret backroom lackey.

It's not pleasant to think about, but facts are facts. As conservatives, it would be hypocritical of us not to be honest about facts. If Toomey can't even stand with conservatives on the one issue we still have, he's move on in a major way.

I do not live in Pennsylvania, but I strongly preferred Toomey in 2004 and 2010. But I like to admit when I was wrong. Toomey is no better than Specter, and probably a bit worse than Specter. That’s a tough pill to swallow.

Imprecise language bothers me, and while all kinds of attacks and criticism can be heaped onto Toomey, I just don’t understand the analysis that zero was gained from defeating Specter, and that Toomey is probably “worse” than Specter.

Specter hounded us for 30 years and even ran for president to make the GOP a pro-abortion party, it takes a lot more than being bad to be worse than what Specter did to us for 30 years.

People should have suspected something about Toomey when he was the 2nd most pro-LGBT Republican, even before he entered the Senate. To the left of Scott Brown. He was the 2nd Republican Senator to call for the repeal of, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” His support was considered what made the repeal possible.

There is no apples to apples direct comparison. Try to see where I am coming from. Toomey just surrendered on the only viable issue conservatives still have left. If he won’t protect the easiest ground, how can he triumph on the harder ground. The time when Specter Senator was a different ball game. But the sad fact is, Specter would probably be helping gun rights more today, than Toomey is.

If he is and was worse than Specter, then I should never have been taking you guy’s word for it, for the last 10 years.

I was evidently listening to the wrong people and Scottish law Specter was the man all along.

Things change. We do the best we can with the info we have at the time. Either Toomey was on the down low all along, he had an epiphany, or he just decided his politics were not viable. Unfortunately, no one can predict the future. Reagan picked Bush. If you want a sure thing, look somewhere else.

I’m not looking for a sure thing, that is your line, and now you have already determined that Specter was better for America than Toomey.

Specter actually became a democrat, maybe we can call Crist back too.

Specter is dead! He will never do another thing to hurt America. Toomey is just a disappointment at least right now. Gays in the military and now this Anti-Immigration nonsense. I don’t even think Specter was as bad as Toomey. I have no love for Specter and quite frankly Santorum is not in power to hurt America either. Just Toomey right now.

We're lucky to get a 50% turnout at a national election. I lived in a town of 150,000 where a school levy was decided on 2500 votes.

The inmates are running the asylum and all real people care about is who wins American Idol. I sincerely think our best hope is for the system to break down sooner rather than later.

if we're disarmed [sheep anyhow], nothing else matters anyways...

This Toomey bill wont be disarming me in any way that I can see. Isnt it just expanding criminal background checks to gun shows? These are the same checks I have to go through now at a gun store. Is there some gun show I can go to now to bypass all checks?

The Morning Joe was falling all over himself praising Toomey, and the Dems on MSNBC completely forgot they were demanding a gun ban. They are talking like this is THEIR bill. Happy days!

Sen Tom Coburn announced he doesn't like the Tommey bill but he was one of the ones that days ago said he would vote for cloture (he would not filibuster a bill.) He called filibustering ‘stupid’ back then.

and, as per yer last thread ping http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3006544/posts?page=17#17, a few hours out from the opening of the kabuki theatre, and we still dont *know* what is really printed on paper to be *voted* for or against...

but, just the talking point highlights suggest that its a bait and switch, 'gotta pass it, THEN find out whats in it'...or the political possibility of bambam being out of ammo and this is nothing but a feelgood appearance of *doing something*...

either way, our 2A Rights are diminished in the eyes of the incrementalist progcomms...
