North Texas Drivers Stopped at Roadblock Asked for Saliva, Blood
NBCDFW ^ | November 19, 2013 | Scott Gordon

Some drivers along a busy Fort Worth street on Friday were stopped at police roadblock and directed into a parking lot, where they were asked by federal contractors for samples of their breath, saliva and even blood.

It was part of a government research study aimed at determining the number of drunken or drug-impaired drivers.

"It just doesn't seem right that you can be forced off the road when you're not doing anything wrong," said Kim Cope, who said she was on her lunch break when she was forced to pull over at the roadblock on Beach Street in North Fort Worth

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is spending $7.9 million on the survey over three years, said participation was "100 percent voluntary" and anonymous.

But Cope said it didn't feel voluntary to her -- despite signs saying it was. "I gestured to the guy in front that I just wanted to go straight, but he wouldn't let me and forced me into a parking spot," she said

-snip-

An agency spokeswoman sent an email confirming the government is conducting the surveys in 30 cities across the country in an effort to reduce impaired-driving accidents.

It’s like Vogon poetry in a cup.

I rather like it.

The only question I have about this incident is why in the hell didn’t any drivers draw down on the thugs?

exactly. when she described it I wondered why she didn’t ask why she was being detained. at that point I think the ‘off duty’ cop would have been hard pressed to explain

Not everybody is as awesome as you are. Which is why cops shouldn't be doing this crap in the first place.

It is not Texas doing it. It is the Feds.

Gov Perry, please pick up the white courtesy phone. Then please pick up the red one and call the Texas Rangers and National Guard to stomp on these jackboots!

Exactly! If a driver was deemed to be DUI, he would or should be immediately taken off the road. Now what do they do, let him drive on? I doubt it. It smacks of a routine checkpoint.

I hafta admit, if we can get them to check for polyps, it’s worth the trip to NM.

If someone is stupid enough to give DNA, then they shouldn’t count on being able to get that evidence suppressed.

You seem a lot more concerned about the alcohol testing on initial contact (which I would attack on scientific reliability, not consent) than you do about what happens after that. Have a drinking and driving problem?

That’s tiresome. If I had a dollar for every time somebody said stuff like that I could retire. When questioning the legality of red light cameras people like you will accuse me of running red lights.

If I oppose LEO beating down handcuffed subjects I get accused of having been arrested. Etc, etc, ad nauseum etc. You can do better than that I am sure.

You are an idiot with reading comprehension problems. All I have been saying from the beginning... Let me go slow and use small words and short sentences. I want you to really concentrate here if you can...

The admissibility of evidence obtained is moot. The officers, the off duty DFW officers are violating the concept of “being secure in your papers and person, whether or not they try to build a case against the public.

So I hope you concentrated. I hope we are done. Your lack of reading comprehension makes me sad. You can do better, take a course or something. They may even be free under Obama Care, I don’t know.

How many elected officials have you had in your home? I’ve had several that I’ve held coffees for at the federal and state and local level.

WoW! You must be a really important figure in your community to have politicians come over for coffees, teas and such. I’m impressed.

The rest of us are simple folk (commoners) who don’t rate high enough on the social scale to attract political flies.
