So, who cares if manufacturing falters or moves abroad?
Americans should, because it is imperative for innovation, national defense and jobs.
At regular intervals since the Great Depression of the 1930s, Americans have been beset by doubts about the future of manufacturing. From the despair about growth and fear of "overinvestment" after the Depression to the panic about the Japanese challenge of the 1970s and 1980s and now to the almost subconscious dread about rising competition from China and India, the ability to provide good jobs and steady returns from this sector has come into question.
In the wake of the current, 37-month-long downturn in jobs and loss of international market share, the doubts have taken on political salience as well.
Emblematic of this sentiment is the apparent doubt of Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan and other economists about the strength of domestic manufacturing. In a recent appearance before Congress, Greenspan was asked whether he thought it "important for an economy to have manufacturing."

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/959787/posts Lawmaker predicts defeat for 'Buy American' language (Defense Department procurement update)
"But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade." ~ Karl Marx, On the Question of Free Trade, January 9, 1848
http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/01/09ft.htm#marx "Communists and socialists feel sure that setting up international free trade systems which impose regulations chuck full of intrigues, redistribution plans, arbitrary law, and interdependence schemes, will win out against the conservative interests of every free nation. What could be better than to use free trade to reverse the advantage of the relatively free, moral, prosperous,
and strong nations of the Earth, so that the tyrannical, amoral, poor, and weak nations of the socialist bloc might get the upper hand? What could be a more cunning approach than to market the idea that those who oppose free trade are enemies of freedom?"

The AVERAGE pay for a Longshoremen dockworker in LA is $120,000 a year.
Think about that for a minute.

Laid off? lol! You bet I have been. Just didn't whine about it. My own fault, for not guessing right. Life is tough, but I am tougher.

Really?
I havent had a steady job in 2 years, I had 7 in the last 2 or 3, 30 in the last 10
Care to start bragging again?
To: MonroeDNA
Not that again!!!
You keep posting this as if there are millions of dock workers. First you say that people should get whatever they can out of a job and now you ridicule the dock workers.
According to you it's ok to make a lot of money as long as MonroeDMA approves of the way you earn it.

Yeah, that kind of is odd.
Now the argument will come up that offshoring is the fault of "the unions" when IT workers are being laid off left and right.

The AVERAGE pay for a Longshoremen dockworker in LA is $120,000 a year. Just did and here's the solution: We TRIPLE their salary! Then, all that crap stays in China because nobody can afford to ship it here.

Well the average factory worker makes no where near that.
To: RaceBannon
I would never brag about how long I was unemployed. Nobody owes me a job. It is up to me.
That said, have you ever lived in your car race? I did. And never, ever blamed anyone else but me.
Not bragging (how can living in your car possibly be so?--I'm more homeless than you?!? lol!). Just stating how I am not a loser, and dug myself out, with no help.
Because I am not a loser. And don't whine about unfair jobs, unfair governement, unfair anything. It is entirely up to me, and nobody else. I sink or swim. Then again, I am a man.
Children whine. Men don't. Unions do.

Nobody owes you a job.
Sink or swim on your own. If you are not tough enough to get a job without a union, stay under the porch, and whine.

Faulty Syllogism:
Logical Fallacy of the Undistributed Middle
Definition: The middle term in the premises of a standard form categorical syllogism never refers to all of the members of the category it describes.Examples:
1. Marx was a free-trader, and someone else is a free-trader, therefore that person is a Marxist.
The middle term is "free-trader." While "Marx" and "someone else" share the property of being free-traders, it doesn't follow that the someone in question is a Marxist; he may be a libertarian.
2. All Russians were revolutionists, and all anarchists were revolutionist, therefore all anarchists were Russians.
The middle term is "revolutionist." While both "Russians" and "anarchists" share the common property of being revolutionist, they may be separate groups of revolutionists, and so we cannot conclude that anarchists are otherwise the same as Russians in any way. Example from Copi and Cohen, 208.
Proof: Show how each of the two categories identified in the conclusion could be separate groups even though they share a common property. For example, show that Pat Buchanan is not a Socialist, even though he chose a Socialist as his running-mate.

Aince I never stated that anyone owed me a job, nor did I brag about how long I was unemployed to whine but to make apoint about how long I have been involvd in hundreds of resumes and refused hires due to being over-educated/under-educated/job lost overseas, your comments are meaningless to me.
I do have a question for you: Since you say you lived in your car, and now claim to be a manufacturer yourself of some special product, where did the money come from to operate the business?
Who is your sugar daddy?
You don't know me, nor do you know the efforst I make to survive, nor do you know the string of events that lead to me being here.
I can say that I almost lived in my car, but I got sober first
To: raybbr
I'd be a dock worker in a hearbeat if it meant I had a job again.
Registered with another temp agency again, some new one, some engineering aide position. I probably wont get it, but, you can't give up. Regardless if Monroe_DNA accuses me of giving up and just whining...
