Catholic professor draws protesters Conservative voted for Obama
Ventura County Star ^ | November 13, 2008 | Tom Kisken

More than 50 protesters with anti-abortion signs recited the rosary outside St. John's Seminary because inside a politically conservative Catholic was explaining why he voted for Barack Obama.

The Democratic president-elect supports abortion rights. And though Douglas Kmiec, former constitutional law counsel for presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, is adamantly opposed to abortion, he not only voted for Obama but campaigned for him and wrote a book about his reasons.

Firstly, I call attention that this posting is dealing with two stories.

I read that it is prohibited to copy Greenville online's stories, however they do have a story this morning on the Reverend Jay Scott Newman urging penance on those who voted for Obama at http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20081113/NEWS01/811130314/1001/NEWS01 . Here further is his blog http://web.mac.com/jayscottnewman/Site/A_Parish_Priest.html . I think this second story is of more import but did not have many sources to print at this point in time at least.

Penance we are called on but I humbly add on that I am not to judge people as we all need to repent of our offenses against G-d. This story though, was of importance.

. . .a politically conservative Catholic was explaining why he voted for Barack Obama.

Sorry, but this guy isn't 'politically conservative' if he could ever even THINK about voting for Obama.

Why do we identify Kmiec as Catholic?

There is nothing surprising in all of this... Both forms of socialism of the past - in Russia and in Germany - attracted/seduced (at least in the beginning) a significant part of intelligentsia (though, not a majority). Lenin called them “useful idiots”. Hitler did not bother to call them anything...

Kmiec is lying through his teeth. End of story.

Obama is a cosponsor of the FOCA which strips all restrictions on abortion from all laws from all levels of government and allows civil lawsuits against any who impinges on abortion at will.

If he wrote a book on Obama he knows this full well.

I’m a Catholic center-right who opposes abortion and the death penalty. However, I’m still going to my brother’s home with my family for Thanksgiving and we not associating her with Marx or Hitler since he and his wife voted for Obozo. They are Catholic as well.

See this is the bs that happens when people make religious beliefs the central tenet of their political affiliation. There is a reason it is called separation of church and state (you think our forefathers had their own concerns when they drafted the Constitution).

Thank you for the responses. I hope I could still Link to the Greenville newspaper if not copy excerpts. I had to get online via the phone line this morning so I apologize that I can’t watch this story closely but felt the second one especially is important.

This guy is an anti-2nd amendment supporter. He wrote that Heller was wrongly decided. Enough.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say about the link... First of all, it is indeed separation of Church and State and not the separation of Religion and State. I hope the difference is clear.

Also, there is nothing extraordinary that catholic voted for Obama. As I mentioned before both German and Russian versions of socialism (not mention Italian) in the beginning attracted a lot of otherwise decent people. Those people were largely disappointed, let me put it this way.

I would suggest that to really inform his Catholic conscience, the good Professor should attend an abortion...perhaps a late term one...then he should attend the weekly meetings of a Rachel Vineyard (provided by the Catholic Church)group where those who chose abortion tell of the pressure they felt and the pain they have experienced as a result of their “choice”.
I do not make these suggestions lightly.

You don’t seem to understand the meaning of the First Amendment to the Constitution, but putting that aside, I also have beloved family members who are de facto abettors of socialism and abortion through their votes. We don’t talk politics with them.

I like Dennis Prager’s take on this. We don’t have to agree with our relatives, just love them. But we choose our friends based upon common values.

By the way, voting for abortion through abortion candidates would seem to go against the definition of “Catholic”, but when Ted Kennedy receives Communion within a stone’s throw of the Pope, maybe the definition of Catholic becomes “anyone who calls himself that”.

“politically conservative Catholic?”

Right... sounds like he’s of the cafeteria Catholic variety... must be expecting a handout - maybe coinage from the “Chosen One” to feed/shelter ILLEGALS.

That idiot should be excommunicated. How any Reagan conservative could support a radical Marxist community agitator is beyond comprehension.

I do not make these suggestions lightly.

I am sure you do not. I have known a few women who have succumbed to the rhetoric, allowed themselves to be convinced, and later suffered from the horrible guilt of realizing the full import of their actions. Every time they see a child, a baby, a toddler they will wonder...

Some have hardened their hearts to that, others sought the forgiveness of Jesus Christ, but all will, at some level, live with what they have done.

Agreed. I have liberal relatives, too. It’s not a question of evil, it’s a question of unfortunate moral confusion. And a lot of Catholics have been misled by poor and sometmes dissident catechists in the years since Vatican II.

Even the statement of American bishops’ conference last summer seemed at some points to equate abortion as on a par with “racisim.” That’s not quite what it actually said, but I’m afraid it was the usual compromise between orthodox bishops and the liberals who still control most of the apparatus. I suspect that the insertion of the word “racism” at several points was deliberate on somebody’s part. More than 50 bishops subsequently spoke out on their own, but I wish they had done so earlier at the conference.
