President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

The mayor has now removed 1500 NO law enforcement officers from searching for the living to going after the looters.

O'Reilly had 2 reporters on that were in the middle of NO after the hurricane and got out. They reported that the looting and chaos started after the prisons were emptied due to the rising waters.

A public service announcement informed them (and the other people in town) that they were going to free all of the inmates and that they (the authorities) could not guarantee anyone's safety.

These were bad people to begin with. And now they are everyone's problem.

The president needs to find a domestic Patton to send down there ...
--->

Did you hear his speech? Read what he said?

from: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1474447/posts
President Outlines Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

"I have directed Secretary of Homeland Security Mike Chertoff to chair a Cabinet-level task force to coordinate all our assistance from Washington. FEMA Director Mike Brown is in charge of all federal response and recovery efforts in the field."

and from a different page on the WH website:
"Secretary Chertoff has declared the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina an incident of national significance - the first-ever use of this designation."

What more can you be looking for? It is clear that the President has taken charge here, and has us working on getting the job started.

The trucks were in quite a few locations today -- looters that take TV's, etc. are common thugs.

I believe the President has a good idea of the competence of the maor and governor...he had to call them and TELL them to evacuate.

Especially since the definition of "complete and up-to-date" just changed a lot for some people...

Folks, remember to have emergency supplies for your pets. If you have the supplies and gear needed, you won't have to leave your furry friend behind when you get the evac order.

My sister was talking to a woman the other day. Her son evacuated to Jackson from Biloxi and was OK. He argued with his neighbors about leaving and almost had to physically get his wife out of there. They all stayed.

My sister talked to her again today. The place he left was the apartment building where 30 people died. She said they lost everything but my sister pointed out they still have their lives.

I agree, there are people that wanted to leave who didn't get to.

But you can't force them, and I predict we're going to see that even now, some people are not going to want to leave the city.

The looters, of course, won't want to leave.

I heard on one news report that many in the SD don't want to be transferred to the AstroDome and are refusing to leave.

And look at all those people in those apartment buildings waving at the helicopters. I don't think it was a matter of couldn't leave, because if that was the case, they would have sought shelter in the SD, as a "shelter."

These were just many stubborn people who wouldn't leave.

"I wonder if the President realizes how inept the NO mayor and the LA governor are....and is frustrated by this?"

Yes. Of course.

But he is a gracious man, and he will never say so publicly.

I have no idea. But wasn't he in the higher elevation area of NO? What would it have taken for him to make it over?

These folks he was spotlighting according to another reporter came from the Superdome because they didn't want to go to the Astrodome. Why didn't we hear that from Shep?

"Now that all the perps are armed!"

This tels me that relief efforts are being fired upon. You can't ask rescue crews to go into a combat situation when they are already dealing with a dangerous situation.

I think the should send in a couple of Puff the Magic Dragons and hose down anyone shooting at Rescue Crews and LEOs.
