President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

"IMO Once they start comparing Texas schools to the schools in LA, they may not want to go home."

Not sure what you meant by that. The people I know around N.O. sent their kids to private school because LA schools were not -- how to say it -- quite up to academic standards.

Depending on the district in which they enroll, the LA kids may well struggle.

But they're all going to want to go home. Even with all the disgusting behavior going on in NO right now, I hurt, hurt, hurt for the kids and for the good folks who have totally lost not only possessions but community.

In my experience living there, the politicians and their supporters are probably quite comfortable now and in no danger from the looting, etc.

The sheep that gave them their power are abandoned.

People have been talking for years about what would happen should a hurricane this size hit that city, and I'd be willing to bet you there were lots of federal dollars passed from hand to hand over the years to prepare for this.

I will be astounded if some of those reporters don't ask the obvious questions: Where did the money go, why weren't officials prepared? It's not like it was a secret this could happen someday.

Are you watching how Houston is handling the evacuees? How they are prepared and handling this so much better than New Orleans officials?

Compare it to what happened in New Orleans.

Man some heads need to roll in New Orleans.

Where are the all powerful and rich unions my brother-in-law supported all these years? Wonder if they'll help these people out?

This event should serve as a wake-up call to everyone. This could be coming someday to a town near you.

Not me, though, I just moved so far out in the boonies (in Tennessee (God's country) and I'm prepared. I'll never depend on the government or anybody else to take care of me.

This situation WILL get worse. And the anger and frustration needs to be directed where it belongs, to the power brokers in that town and state.

It is the apparent lack of a sufficient military presence to maintain order that I question.

Carefully and slowly read that sentence again. Do you understand exactly what you said? You're basically complaining that nobody predicted that a hurricane-ravaged American city could turn into a war zone. I wouldn't have predicted it. Would you have?

Tell you what, though -- I think the disaster responses nationwide are going to be updated to account for this lesson.

>Very true! The only other option is to give every city in the US (even the small ones) a family to take care of.....Spread them out, and make them manageable!<

I'd love to see this happen. We as a country could do this. If we can take in refuges from other parts of the world, let's hope we can help these folks relocate to other cities and towns.

FEMA has suspended rescuse operations because it's dangerous for them to go out there.

I just heard that also. This is becoming increasingly frustrating for us watching. Imagine what it must be like for those still stranded. I understand the reasons they feel they needed to suspend operations, but I am so sorrowful for those citizens who have no ill intentions other than survival. This is truly tragic. Every moment wasted is a moment someone may die, and probably is dying. I am trying to remain understanding, but this operation is disasterous in more ways than one. It seems no one is really in charge, and nothing today is any better than yesterday. I am at a loss as to why things are moving in such a choatic manner.

There are already the accusations that federal money was diverted away from improving NO's levee system for other purposes, likely the war.

Yes, Sidney Blumenthal already planted that political urban press using the foreign press to launder out the Clinton fingerprints. The way to shoot it down is to explain that the fed money was there but because LA refused to put up any of the state matching funds that were required by law before the fed money could be spent. Since LA made it clear for several years that they weren't going to provide those matches and expected the feds to pay 100%, the money was diverted to other needs, of which there were many.

"This police precinct has been under attack by gang members for several days. At night, the gang stages assaults on the building. After several major firefights, the police are running dangerously low on food, water, and - worst of all - ammunition. Their manpower is decreased, too. "

"They expect an even larger gang attack tonight. So far, neither the police department nor the National Guard has been able to resupply them or send reinforcements. Unless they get them, the situation could turn very bad, very quickly."

"Family calls to the authorities have been unsuccessful as of yet.

"I'm asking any Freeper with contacts who might be able to help get them supplies - especially ammo - and either police or military reinforcements: Please call your contacts and ask them to help get this precinct resupplied and reinforced as soon as possible."

"That's the New Orleans Police Department, District 1, on N. Rampart St. in the French Quarter."

"Thank you. Wampus SC"

Any word yet on how these officers have faired?

Kids are actually pretty resilient. I have worked with kids in a homeless shelter, and I am always amazed and inspired by their strength and zest for life regardless of their present circumstances. It's the old people I feel the worst for. I fear many suicides, depression, alcoholism, etc. among these unfortunate people.

Shep is reporting that folks are dying on I-10 now. Exposure and dehydration are taking its toll.

This just goes to show that even in times of tragedy, there are good people:

Thompson closed his eyes and leaned into each stretch of the bow as he played mournfully. A woman eating crackers and sitting where a vendor typically sells pizza watched him intently. A National Guard soldier applauded quietly when the song ended, and Thompson nodded his head and began another piece, the Andante from Bach's Sonata in A Minor. Like most in the shelter, Thompson's family in Charleston, S.C., has no idea where he is and whether he is alive. Thompson figures he is safe for now and will get in touch when he can. Meanwhile, he will play, and, once in a while, someone at the sports complex will manage a smile.

"These people have nothing," he said. "I have a violin. And I should play for them. They should have something."

His parents should be so proud of him. May God protect him, and all of the people in that mess.

Just imagine how well the plans will work on the ground when this is a biological, chemical, or radiation attack against a major city. Those plans better include controlling civil disorder better than the NO democrats' plans for hurricane aftermaths.

No I didn't see it, the thread is moving fast, but I heard yesterday that they were bringing back the LA nat'l guard from Iraq, and rotating replacement from other areas. Plus an additional 10,000 mobilized.
