President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

But in reality, you can't really compare 9/11 scenario to the entire city of NO.
Think of the land mass that has been affected. 9/11 didn't affected the whole city, it only affected a small physical area of the city.
There were nearby shelters, and hospitals, and infrastructure all readily available to those affected.
In NO the scope of the thing is immense. I'm beginning to think we are understaffing the problem considering the scope of the situation and the fact that people are without food and water. It's going to take a lot more boots on the ground to get control...if the Gov of LA needs to order it, then somebody needs to say so out loud.
The President, or some official needs to "shame her into asking"...if that is truly the case and that is why a bigger presence hasn't shown up.
And as far as FEMA, well, don't they expect this kind of unrest during an emergency? If they haven't planned for that sort of thing, they need to rethink their plans for a major attack or disaster of any kind.
If anyone has a good count on how many Guard are IN New Orleans now and a source for the number, and can pass it on, I'd greatly appreciate it.

More updates from Alexandria/Pineville this morning. Remember, you can DIRECTLY help refugees who are marooned in Central Louisiana, and know exactly how your charitable donation is being used. Just because these thousands of family escaped the city in time doesn't make them all that lucky. Remember, they're stranded here for the next several weeks and they've got no homes or jobs even if they choose to return to their southern parishes at some point in the uncertain future. Please don't abandon them after the headlines change to a more sensational topic!
And yes, the crime wave is spreading out of New Orleans. While it may seem trivial at first, I mentioned in an earlier post that someone broke into my car and stole my CD player and speakers during the early morning hours on Monday. However, as the days passed and I spoke to my landlord and other residents of Pineville, it has become apparent that the migration has brought a crime spree with it. The Pineville Civic Center at Kees Park is housing what has been described as a "rough crowd." My landlord does not believe it's a coincidence that the apartment complexes where the car stereos were boosted are not that far from that relief facility. And a concerted effort has been made to keep reports of these burglaries OUT of the local media, which I think is a disservice to everyone who is a potential target of these looters.
But I digress, because I want all of you to read these links and focus your assistance to the place where it really is needed the most. Now that a considerable percentage of the original motel guests have been evicted and relegated to shelters like the Rapides Parish Coliseum, it's important to concentrate on assisting them with their everyday basic needs like personal hygiene, classroom and automotive supplies.

I believe it's truth, just because put a lot of people in a place without air conditioning, no toilet facilities, etc., and people are going to die. Add to that the fact that there is no water or food and more people are going to die.
Soon disease is going to set in in the form of diseases that cause added dehydration and more people will die unless somebody can start getting them out of there.

My Mother is Cpl. Delores Paige she works with the New Orleans Sheirff Department. I spoke with her about an hour ago, acordding to her in other deputies, along with the inmates, they were transported and trapped onto the Broad Bridge near the Time Picayunne Building, it is also between Tulane and Washington Streets. They have been there for the last four days with out any thing to eat or drink. Some officials came to get the inmates, but left the Deputies there standed I am very concerned for my mother because she is a diabetic and she says she has lost every thing . PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, Help my mother in the others. She also states that ther are people dying all around them. If she can get to some type of safe ground I will come and get her. Please send help.

Story: I just talked to my neighbor who stayed behind at Camp and St. Mary. He walked along Jackson St and saw dead bodies everywhere from gun shoots. After coming upon two dead girls, probably around 12-15 yr old, he had to get out. Where is the national guard? We need help.

I am principal of St. Mary of the Angels School in the 9th Ward of New Orleans. Three Franciscan Priests and about 70 people are on the third floor of my school and, the last I heard, are still there and are worried about food. Is there any way I can find out information about them or if they have been rescued? I am very concerned.

Boil some string, push, and don't forget to breathe. Tie off the cord twice a couple inches apart, before cutting it. It's been done without medical assistance for right at one million years.
Not being mean, that's the best she can reasonably hope for.
These looters are probably setting up "MAD MAX" type safe houses. Stocking food, drink and guns. A gang-land territorial stockade.

Missed the 1st question. Second question about the speed of the federal response.
The only comparison I made is that the left shut up for a few months after 9/11; to the extent this is larger, you'd think the left would be even more willing to put aside political gain as their first goal. I heard on Rush Hillary wants hearings on gas price-gouging to start immediately, e.g.

I'll never forget several years ago while working as lifestyles editor of a daily newspaper typing up a birth announcement:
He (the baby) is the son of SINGLE WOMAN, the grandson of SINGLE WOMAN, the great-grandson of SINGLE WOMAN.
Who needs Daddys when there is that big Sugar Daddy up there in Washington D.C. to take care of you?
I mean if they have buses available now, why weren't those buses mobilized BEFORE the hurricane came on shore? They had 24-48 hours to mobilize them before disaster struck. And the Superdome--why in the world was it not set up to provide--in case of an emergency--water and sanitation to thousands? Portapotties could serve when toilets or sewers back up--so have them stored near if not on that facility
Same with water--if a bus can get to the SD to transport people out--why couldn't have buses been sent in the day after the hurricane filled with water--and food?
These are many basic commom sense things that I can think of--and if I can think of them, why did not the people responsible for the well-being of their constituents think of them? Before disaster struck?
