Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

**He just said, "People are saying that if this had happened in a predominantly white area, the response would have been faster."**

The "predominantly white" areas around new orleans have people DYING in them, too. but you'll notice the lack of CAMERAS, so no one in the media seems to care about that!

Tulane is complete. Charity is ongoing. You didn't hear it from me.

Thanks, that's great news! And I've already forgotten who told me... ;-)

I think you're right; just watch Houston and the other evacuee cities; I think it will happen there, too.

I think this time the media is going to be held responsible for crap like that with the American public.

Every where I turn people are talking about the welfare class being at fault for a majority of this mayhem-people know about the race riot in NO and no one I know of is amused right now.

In a word No. I think it was Saturday, two days before the hurricane hit, a Freeper wrote on some thread this was going to end up being a cluster**** (pardon my language).

People d/n realize the time it takes to assemble all the 'stuff' that went into NO, MS,AL. There was limited access into NO by road. The airport runways had to be thoroughly checked for damage. ATC controllers and equipment had to be brought in. The bridges to the east of the city were gone. Additionally,in MS the flooded roads and downed huge trees blocking roads added to the nightmare and slowed down relief efforts significantly. The list is too long.

A corrupt, undermanned police department, an out of touch with reality (for whatever reason-snort) mayor who is one sandwich short of a picnic and an incompetent, out of her league, governette's infamous words sometime over last weekend (paraphrasing) "if we all work together we will get through this and it will be a positive experience". One wonders what qualifies as negative experience in her thinking? She has had a limited exposure to real life.

Usually it is 72 hours before substantial help begins to arrive after a major disaster. The fact that the Coasties and the Navy were there early was a true Godsend. I could go on like this for paragraphs. No matter what either of us says a disaster relief situation does not come together in the time frame of a TV 1 hour episode. Again we are back to reality, a commodity in short supply with all those from the state of LA, so very sad.

Climbing down off my soapbox and hushing up on the ranting.

The above is the reason. Decades of corruption, welfare, drugs,...you name it, have added to what is being sown now.

What we are seeing on TV are the details. I believe what you have stated is the core issue and you have hit it dead center, IMHO.

I'm paging Howlin, too, in the hopes she recalls the post made by someone who was talking about how the soul of a person is revealed in times like these. I have saved so many extraordinary posts...I hope I can find it for reposting. I think it was not on the Katrina Live Threads but it was referenced/linked on one or more of these threads. Maybe, NautiNurse recalls as well.

He just said, "People are saying that if this had happened in a predominantly white area, the response would have been faster."

Let's just say that if it had happened in a predominantly civilized area, the response would have been faster. Race doesn't play into it. The fact that the residents were shooting at the rescuers certainly does.

My gosh, these idiots just will not face the truth, even when it comes at them in bullet form.

I can't take him on Hardball but in this case he wasn't talking over anyone. That's what I meant by a "good job."

Heck, if I switched the channel every time I disagreed with someone, I'd wear my remote out.

Wolfie Blitzer on CNN agrees with you---Bush too late..

But, I would say that since the hurricane happened on Monday, the flood and damage happened on Tuesday...today is Friday....so that leave 2 whole days,,,just TWO!

Now, considering this is a STATE and CITY issue as well, I don't think it is too much to ask that the city and state can do TWO days worth of work...while it takes TIME to get those trucks and personnel from all over America.

BTW, Elijah Cummings agree with Wolf (surprise?) and said that the Congressional Black Caucus is the "concsience" of the Congress, and that now that they have come out and TOLD President Bush that he wasn't doing good enough...that NOW things are getting done correctly. S

So the credit should go to the Congressional Black Caucus for what is happening re: all of the help there today.

I report, you decide!!!!

Why are the feds responsible when A) The locals pols are too dumb to order an evacuation and/or B) The local citizenry is too stupid to bug out on their own?

MSNBC says the schedule is delayed by about an hour and a half. They say the President will speak after doing an airborne tour of the damage in New Orleans.

It looked like Nagin went on Marine One with him (good move). I would bet that Bush let Nagin blow off some steam during the last hour and they'll have peace in the valley now.

Like it or not, Nagin's the Mayor of the major city that was devastated and he'll be an important player over the next few weeks (or months). The people of New Orleans can't have him going off the deep end again.
