Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Please inform CNN, MSNBC and your local MSM affiliates. We need to raise Hell.

Proves the MSM are not "masters of the obvious"

He's the President. He needs to go somewhere down there that can symbolically resemble ground zero from 9/11. Not the Superdome or Convention Ctr obviously. But somewhere where the Pres, Mayor and the Governor can stand together amongst a ton of NG, police and medics, put aside blame game and show some real leadership. This is needed to motivate the workers and start injecting some positive media coverage. Bush needs to be on this 24x7 and focus on this like 9/11 over the next week and undo the PR damage.

Well, one things for sure, here in NC, as I am sure you know, we get out and take care of ourselves and don't sit around and wait for somebody to come and tell us what to do.

And we certainly don't go on TV and whine about not getting food and water that afternoon!

Oh, I don't know. Hearings might be very useful. Especially if they go into how the levees and pumps were (or weren't) maintained, and where the money went.

Bring it on.

Actually, some where in these thousands of posts, I recall that the animals were evacuated to a Houston shelter before the hurricane hit.

I'm near San Antonio, and last weekend before Katrina hit, they were already having adoptions of animals who were moved to San Antonio from NO via Houston-For $25, you could adopt an animal that had all it's shots, was spayed or neutered, and had an implanted chip to track it down if it got lost.

I'm thinking the Mayor of NO should borrow from the humane society and Animal Defense League's disaster preparedness plans.

And they wouldn't be driving around in stolen cars with guns shouting "F&&& the police!"....

Well......I know some white people that WOULD do that :)

One thing that has amused me is the "it's been three whole days" thing. Hell, we went without that long in an ICE STORM!

the unleaded futures dropped another 25 cents today....I think that is nearly 70 cents since Bush waived the special formula requirements, and allowed red dyed diesel fuel to be sold to truckers...

the speculators are taking it in the shorts big time.

Can some of you storm watchers provide a list of Cat 2 or above hurricanes during the Clinton Admin? I can then try to google about the national guard and see when the Federal response started (in earnest). I stand by what I said this morning (refusing to politicise this), but an unfair political deluge is coming, and we have to be ready.

I'm just so sick and tired of Congress sitting on their thrones probing what went wrong...after the event.

Congress is useless.

Honestly, I think they do know that.

But, I think they like to conveniently forget or ignore...so, it's always best to keep REMINDING them. : )
