Kenya Colonial History
The colonial history of Kenya starts at the Berlin Conference of 1885 when European nations divided Africa among themselves. In 1894 the British government declared the East African Protectorate over Kenya and Uganda. The protectorate became a colony in 1920. The Kenya historical events timeline below highlights key events of the colonial period.
1944: Kenyan African Union (KAU) formed to campaign for independence.
1947: Jomo Kenyatta becomes KAU leader.
1947: The Mau Mau rebel movement is born
1952: Mau Mau activities intensify. Colonial government declares state of emergency. Kenyatta, Achieng Aneko and others are arrested.
1953: Kenyatta is sentenced to 7 years imprisonment on charges of leading Mau mau.
1959: Kenyatta is released from prison.
1960: State of emergency ends. Britain starts preparing Kenya for majority African rule. James Gichuru, Oginga Odinga and others form Kenya African National Union (KANU)
1963 June 1st: Kenya achieves internal self-government (Madaraka).
1963 December 12th: Kenya gains independence. Jomo Kenyatta becomes Prime Minister.

On December 12th 1964, Kenya became a Republic. Jomo Kenyatta became Kenya’s first President with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga as his Vice President. Odinga later had ideological differences with Kenyatta. In 1966, Odinga left KANU and formed an opposition party, Kenya People’s Union (KPU).

That all said, I recall that Kenya was somewhat rebelious in the early 60s and may have called itself a Republic before it actually became independent from Britain and could legally determine its own form of government. (This created a model for Ian Smith to declare Rhodesian independence from Britain a few years later.)

Typewriters of that era had pica and elite font sizes, but fonts or typefaces were matters for printers, not typists. Most typewritten text looked pretty much the same, at least to me. The Taitz document typeface and font size look very, very similar to the output of my first manual typewriter. Some individual letters in the document, especially the capital A, are dark and smudged, which was a good sign of neglecting to clean the accumulated dried ink out the striking heads of the typebars.
The only equipment that a forger would need to create this document would be an old typewriter and (preferably) an old pre-printed birth registration document. By using an old typewriter instead of a computer, the forger would avoid worries about incorrect fonts/typefaces.
If Dan Rather's forger had just used an old IBM Selectric, it would have been much harder to discredit the CBS forgeries.
Man, you need an African education. English is the official language of virtually every former British colony, including (in Africa) Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Guinea, and, yes, Kenya. English is the "default" language because each of these countries has many, many tribal languages and they needed to pick a "neutral" language. For bonus points, what country has more English speakers and readers than any other country? --the answer is India, which has twice as many English speakers as the United States, and 11 times as many as England..

We ABSOLUTELY NEED KEYWORDS WHEN THREADS ARE POSTED. SO many don’t use them, and it stinks.
Otherwise, if you miss the front page and are looking to see certain topics, you’re lost. But when folks post threads, if they put in the proper keywords, those coming after the fact .. hours afterward .. can search by that keyword, and all articles with it will come up.

Well, they were planning to bulldoze it anyway.
I don’t have the technical terms for these things, but on a manual typewriter, when you are filling out a form (and especially if you do it for a living), you tend to get good at typing something right on the line (or where you want a line to be). But when the paper is on the roller, it’s locked onto a line and if you want to move the paper a little up or down (less than one full height of line) you flip a switch to unlock the paper so you can move it freely in any direction. You pull it up or down very gently to get it as close as possible to the printed line. For example, “I _______ Registrar,” is the line you want to be not too far above or below, when you type in your name.
Once you have the paper precisely in position, you are supposed to relock it and start typing just where you want. But, if you’re at all hurried or distracted, you might start typing your name and then realize you forgot to relock the paper. (This is bad because continued typing on a manual, with variations of pressure, can easily make an unlocked paper slip and shift.) So one letter gets typed, like an “O” and then you remember to flip the lock to keep the paper steady again. Then you hit the second letter and quite possibly the one letter typed, or even the relocking action, has shifted the paper just very slightly. Result, letter “O” followed by “D” looks a little tighter than they ought to be.
I know this is very sleepifying information. I am sorry! :)
