Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

You can almost see a scenario where a bunch of misfits decide to go postal instead of going to Afghanistan under the guise of “I’m going to get killed anyway. Let’s make the news”.... Columbine style.

The Virginia Tech gunman had no real motive. He just wanted to make a big “noise”.

If it is significantly larger, then it is a problem, and I don’t doubt that it could be.

There are generally fewer than 30 murders/year in Colorado Springs, which has a population of about 200k. To have 10 guys from the same unit being arrested for murder, attempted murder, or manslaughter ... is more than a statistical anomaly.

And to forestall the next question, there are both white and black guys involved, and no obvious Islamic connections.

That is hogwash. The only ones carrying weapons on a base are the MP’s and Federal officers (if present). Some soldiers may be carrying weapons heading to and from training, but I highly doubt they would be authorized to go after the bad guy unless they were directly under attack.

Sadly, I must disagree with you. The assumption is not entirely unfounded. Locally, several soldiers from the same unit at Ft. Carson have been arrested for committing a several murders over the past couple of years.

The question isn't whether members of the military commit murders, it's whether they do so at a significantly higher rate than civilians. And in fact, they don't.
