A word about posting satire
September 29, 2014 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 09/29/2014 3:38:42 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

No, FR is not trying to quash satire. However, it should be clearly labeled as such in the title. Some people seem to think it's great trickling our readers into falling for satire. It's not. A lot of people come to FR and scan the headlines clicking on articles of interest. If they're not familiar with the author or source, they may be misled and may even pass it on to others. No thanks.

If you post satire, please label it as "satire' in the title.

Thanks

Wait a minute - how do we know THIS thread isn’t satire?

Yep. Early in my posting career I put up a doozy of a satire and FR posters flamed! Then I got a doozy of a zot. It happens, it happens. Best to let people know your intent.

>>Would it be possible to open a forum labeled “Satire” just like the “General Chat” and “Religion” forums? We might even want a separate forum for vanities.<<

Who reads what forum we are in?

Remember the FR credo: 1) React to the headline; 2) Read the responses; 3) Read the post; 4) This is in WHAT forum? 5) Apologize

Thanks.

Some FReepers may have been so scrupulous about observing the “no modification of titles” law of the Medes and the Persians that they were afraid to place a label on satire.

We needed that permission!

Now I’ma go beat up people who don’t!

Kidding. Maybe.

A little.

Smack ‘em lightly?

Sigh.

One problem is every title here gets indexed by google (title and blurb only show up on google searches). Half our new readers come in from google. If they’re fooled right off the bat, chances are we’ve lost them.

Jim....one question, if I may...

"if you like your health plan, you can keep your health plan; if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor."

Is that satire or not?

Thanks for the alternate point of view.

As another poster said up thread, things are so absurd these days it’s almost impossible to read some articles and know if they are satire or not

If this is s serious news site, and I believe it is, I don’t see a problem with labeling satire for what it is.

I’m sure you can still read the article and recognize the absurdity of it, even if you knew up front it was satire.

I know I can.

To avoid confusion and misunderstanding, on every bomb dropped, 0bama is going to etch a copy of his Noble Peace Prize.

(do I have to label this as satire?)

Is this satire?

I agree with you. Several times I have been reading an article and then thinking “....wait a minute....”, then realizing that my chain is being pulled.

Few comics start out with the punch line.....

If there are any indicators, put them at the END of the article.

I don’t think John Semmens has ever been trying to “catch” anyone.

Oh, no.

Certainly there is no "LOOK AT ME!" factor involved.

As if.
