WASHINGTON -- A liberal legal scholar is withdrawing his nomination to an appeals court judgeship after Senate Republicans blocked a vote on his confirmation last week. Goodwin Liu, 40, said in a letter to President Barack Obama Wednesday that he and family need "to make plans for the future" now that there is little prospect of a Senate vote on his nomination.

Senate Democrats are going to be working over the Christmas break to deliver a lump of coal to the American people in the form of a radical changing of the Senate's rules. This is a naked power grab by liberals in the Senate pure and simple. The National Journal reports that Senate Democrats are laying the groundwork to chip away at the filibuster on January 5, 2011. They are going to push the idea that a simple majority of the Senate can abolish the filibuster rules, or radically change the rules, in a new Congress. Is there some reason that a Republican Senator cannot walk in and fillibuster ala Mr. Smith?????? If this timeline is so important why not disturb it?

I have sent the following letter via eamil and fax to my two Senators from Idaho, Seantor Crapo and Senator-elect Risch. I am also sending it to all of the other 48 US Senators. In my estimation, it is time we informed all of our representatives, from the President on down, who they really work for and what our expectations of them are. In particular, since the US Senate does not have a fillibuster proof majority, it is time that the GOP Senators stood up like patriots and statesmen, instead of the wiley, self-interested politicians so many of them act...

These democrats are hilarious!!! Kerry calling for a fillibuster between ski runs, Kennedy calling for a fillibuster between shots... Hillary calling for one between polls. Its a joke... They ain't got the stones!!! Just a bunch of whimpering babies like always. The only one remotely respectable is Robert Sheets Byrd who hasn't seen this much politcal polarization since a black family moved into his neighborhood in the 50's. I got news for ya... the dems ain't gonna do sheeet. They don't take stands... they just criticize afterwards!!! The spinning is hilarious. Here's my line to democrats: "You gonna pull that...

In what is coming to appear a coordinated attack on President Bush, attorney Lawrence Tribe was just on Fox News, faulting Judge Alito as a 'dangerous reactionary' who threatens Tribe's grand-daughter with his 'far-right views on denying a woman's right to an abortion.' He all but promised a fillibuster on the Alito nomination 'for the good of the country.' Tribe would not make such a prediction without having first consulted with Senatorial Leftists. This seems too pat, coming upon yesterday's Dem demand that we cut and run in Iraq. It seems clear that unless Bush is willing to get down...

Open Challenge to the "Conservative" Punditry. Stand and Deliver time boys and girls. OK. Let's forget about your inexcusable conduct towards Miers and deal. The LIBERALS are LAUGHING at you. They cannot believe you are all THIS stupid. They are watching, in stunned disbelief, as YOU do THEIR job in destroying the 1st Republican Majority in 50 years. All you "Conservatives" are all telling us "You can't trust Bush" and "We can win this fight". Well guess what. We have NO proof we can trust you. WHERE is YOUR paper trail? NONE of you were able to convince the Senate...

If there was ever any doubt, Sen. Lincoln Chafee’s vote Wednesday against the nomination of Priscilla Owen has made it clear that, save for leadership numbers games, conservatives would not be any worse off with a Democrat than with Chafee (R., R.I.) in the Senate. Rhode Island Republicans will have a chance next year to avert that painful choice only if a serious primary challenger emerges — and it could happen as soon as next week...

Last week's Senate compromise that averted a showdown over filibustered judicial nominees was actually the opening salvo of the 2008 presidential campaign, several veteran political observers say. The unexpected consequence of the filibuster compromise is to give a boost to the presidential prospects of Sen. George Allen, Virginia Republican. "Allen was very vocal in support of changing the rules to eliminate the filibuster of judicial nominees and took the right position in condemning the compromise," said Free Congress Foundation President Paul M. Weyrich. Conservatives have strongly condemned the compromise as a politically motivated gambit by Arizona Sen. John McCain, key...

The Bush administration said yesterday that Democratic senators should not expect to get the documents they are seeking before they will allow an up-or-down vote on John R. Bolton... "They have what they need," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. "The Democratic and Republican leaders of the Intelligence Committee have had access to this sensitive, highly classified information. The Democrats clamoring for it have already voted against the nomination. This is about partisan politics." ...The documents sought by Democratic Sens. Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware and Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut are e-mail messages and other background material for...

Democrats lost the evangelical vote decades ago. As the last election showed, they are now in danger of permanently losing Catholics. But the left has devised an ingenious technique for winning back disaffected Catholics – insult their Church and its leader. And they thought of this all by themselves? As part of the campaign to defeat the Republican push to end the judicial filibuster, on May 17, 2005, MoveOn.org, PAC ran an ad appealing to anti-Catholic paranoia. The broadside was an altered photo that showed Pope Benedict XVI standing outside the Supreme Court’s chambers. The pontiff appears to be holding...

Blood on the Potomac On May 23rd in a scene reminiscent of Caesar's assassination seven backstabbers on the Republican side committed an act of betrayal worthy of Brutus. We might as well remember this day as the Ides of May. The left as it has for most of history has shown it is more adept at power politics than the center and right. Next to Brutus, Benedict Arnold and other famous traitors we may now add the name of John McCain. The left was looking for a fiddle to play and they found a violin in John McCain. ...

Democratic leaders claimed victory yesterday over the deal senators cut regarding filibusters of judicial nominees, while most Republicans said it violated their principles and conservative activists vowed retribution. "Our republic stands strong. Our Constitution is solid. Our flag flies over a nation that has reaffirmed its faith in freedom," said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, while Sens. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, and Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi praised the deal for averting a crisis. But while most Democrats crowed, the Congressional Black Caucus sounded a discordant note. "This deal is...

Senate Deal Detonated Against The Constitution By Moderates By Kevin Fobbs May 25, 2005 The Senate deal worked out by 14 moderate Republican and Democratic senators may look official and sport an official sounding name -- "Memorandum of Understanding on Judicial Nominations" -- but America and the U.S. Constitution were hoodwinked. Yep, they pulled a quick one all right. We actually were able to see the Constitution being literally hijacked, yes, heisted right from under our very noses. Some in the Senate felt that the institution was dangling dangerously on the precipice, like Senator Robert Byrd -- absolutely the last...

WASHINGTON — Moderate senators from both parties are working behind the scenes on a compromise as a battle plays out on the Senate floor on whether President Bush's judicial nominees should all be given a straight confirmation vote in the chamber. Although lawmakers involved in the talks say progress is being made, they're unsure a deal will necessarily be made on Wednesday. ....

Regarding "Filibuster's traditional use is ignored" (Letters, Wednesday): The writer said the filibuster has never been used before to block a judicial nominee. The truth is that during the Clinton administration, 60 judicial nominees were blocked by Republicans, using means including the filibuster. In fact, Bill Frist even joined in the filibuster of 9th Circuit nominee Richard Paez. Also, Democrats have approved more than 200 of President Bush's judicial nominees while only 10 have been blocked. For Republicans to make such a big deal over those 10 nominations while they blocked 60 of Clinton's nominees is extremely misleading and hypocritical....

Apparently, a vote on the constitutional, or "nuclear," option could take place as early as this week. More simply put, a vote to end the filibuster could take place this week. As feministmajority.org explains the filibuster, "Right now, it takes only 41 votes to continue debate and block a vote on a judicial nominee. It takes 60 votes to end debate and force a full Senate vote." This use of the filibuster is obviously subversive. Those who use it, know it is subversive, and love it for that very fact. Those who oppose it, oppose it as a subversive tactic....
