  • After Turner Earthquake in Weiner District, Democrats’ Civil War Against Obama Begins

History will never be able to tell us who made the fatal error in New York’s 9th district – Barack Obama, or Anthony Weiner. Just as Weiner kept on making critical errors every step of the way as his personal scandal unfolded earlier this year, President Obama has done everything in NY-09 to show that he is no friend of Israel and has no clue how to create jobs or learn from his many mistakes. I predict a tectonic shift among American Jews and within the Democratic Party if Obama doesn’t quietly retire. All the spinning in the world can’t...

Some Democrats are arguing that the NY-9 race doesn’t mean anything for Obama’s 2012 chances. But according to David Weprin, the Democratic candidate who lost the NY-9 race to Republican Bob Turner, Obama has “major problems” in New York. Weprin blamed Obama’s unpopularity and Israel issues for his failed bid during an interview with Washington Jewish Week’s Adam Kredo: My first question for Weprin was, “What happened?” His reply: “The media, my opponent somewhat successfully made it a referendum on Obama. I don’t know if it was just Israel, but Israel certainly was a major part of it.” Whether real...

The outcome of any individual election to the United States House, even in a highly partisan era where Congressional elections have a relatively strong correlation with presidential voting and national trends, is going to be determined based on a combination of local and national factors. One congressional district’s outcome may diverge significantly from another’s – even if they seem similar on the surface — based on the quality of the candidates, the demographics of the region and issues highly pertinent to the district but not to the nation at large. Any one race may or may not be representative. There...

  • Ridiculous NY-09 spin: “It’s a very difficult district for Democrats” (Well, it is now ...)

Republicans won two House seats in a special election last night. One, in Nevada, had been a relatively safe district, and Republican Mark Amodei cruised to victory over Democrat Kate Marshall as expected. Also as predicted, Republican Bob Turner won a six-point victory over Democrat David Weprin in NY-09, a Congressional district in the heart of Democratic stronghold New York City. The margin of victory exactly matched polling leads for Turner from both Siena and Democratic pollster PPP in the final days before the vote. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a surprise. The NY-09 seat has been in Democratic hands since,...

With the outcome of his own reelection effort 14 difficult months away, President Obama suffered a sharp rebuke Tuesday when voters in New York elected a conservative Republican to represent a Democratic district that has not been in GOP hands since the 1920s. Bob Turner, the winner, cast the election as a referendum on Obama’s stewardship of the economy and, in the state’s Ninth Congressional District, which has a large population of Orthodox Jewish voters, the president’s position on Israel.

He doesn't have a 'messaging' problem. He has a record of bad policies and anti-Israel rhetoric. ### *snip* This is a preview of what President Obama might face in his re-election campaign with a demographic group that voted overwhelmingly for him in 2008. And it could affect the electoral map, given the battleground states—such as Florida and Pennsylvania—with significant Jewish populations. In another ominous barometer for the Obama campaign, its Jewish fund-raising has deeply eroded: One poll by McLaughlin & Associates found that of Jewish donors who donated to Mr. Obama in 2008, only 64% have already donated or plan...

Obama and the Jews; It's Over – The Backstory Circulating in New York Newsrooms Tonight. The election results that are sending a Conservative Roman Catholic Republican to Washington over a Yarmulke-wearing Jew… in one of the most heavily Jewish congressional districts in America is sending shockwaves through New York newsrooms and Washington tonight. The 70-30 break among Jewish voters against Obama's candidate is monumental, and it has huge national significance. The Jewish voting block went huge for Obama in 2008. Voting D has been in their genes since FDR, but no more Obama’s blatant mistreatment of Israel, his total incompetence...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Republicans have scored an upset victory in a House race that became a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic policies. Retired media executive and political novice Bob Turner defeated Democratic state Assemblyman David Weprin in a special election Tuesday to succeed Rep. Anthony Weiner, a seven-term Democrat who resigned in June after a sexting scandal.

A reader passes this along. It looks very similar to one that Jane Corwin filed in a recent Upstate Congressional special election. Update: So I got off the phone with the lawyer who filed this case, and they’re impounding the non-regular ballots (i.e. absentee & provisional) because of “gross incompetence” on behalf of the Board of Elections, citing “absentee ballots being mailed to dead people and people who did not request them.”

The White House is girding for a political loss in the heart of New York on Tuesday. They’re also spinning up an explanation that won’t entirely result in the blame landing on the low popularity of the president. As in Massachusetts, where Democratic Senate candidate Martha Coakley was faulted by the White House and many others for tone-deaf campaigning, Democratic candidate Dave Weprin may see the undercarriage of that new White House campaign bus. Democratic officials and President Obama’s advisers expect Weprin to lose the election to upstart Republican Bob Turner in the contest to fill the 9th District seat...
