I've just learned that Anne O'Neill, John O'Neill's wife has died in Houston from an infection contracted during chemotherapy. Anne was a woman of courage and grace, and I consider it a privilege to have known her. I ask your prayers for John and for the O'Neill family.

Traitors of Record: The Record of the New York TimesBy Fedora “. . .the most untrustworthy paper in the United States. . .” --President Dwight Eisenhower, referring to the New York TimesIntroductionLast week Senator John Cornyn criticized the New York Times for endangering national security with a James Risen story on NSA surveillance timed to coincide with a vote on the Patriot Act and, incidentally, with the release of a book by Risen. A review of the record illustrates that endangering national security through irresponsible leaks is nothing new for the New York Times. Some particularly outrageous examples are worth...

Vietnam Veterans Bare Their Souls In a Searing '72 Documentary See "Winter Soldier." This extraordinary documentary, made in 1972 and having its first theatrical release, not only revisits events during the Vietnam War that have uncanny resonance today but also stands as a riveting example of pure filmic storytelling. An unadorned, black-and-white record of a three-day gathering held in Detroit in 1971, "Winter Soldier" turns the camera on the testimony of former soldiers invited by Vietnam Veterans Against the War to share accounts of atrocities they committed or witnessed. The result is a spellbinding film that achieves impressive power through...

I will vote against the nomination of John Roberts to serve as Chief Justice of the United States. I refuse to vote for a Supreme Court nominee who came before the Senate intent on demonstrating his ability to deftly deflect legitimate questions about his views, opinions and philosophy. If he is confirmed – and he may well be – the Roberts Court will shape the course of constitutional law for decades to come. It will decide dozens of cases that will define the depth and breadth of freedom in America – our commitment to civil rights, our dedication to civil...

Morning Edition, August 15, 2005 · The 1972 documentary Winter Soldier was made by a group of filmmakers to chronicle the Winter Soldier Investigation of 1971, in which Vietnam veterans testified to war crimes and atrocities they witnessed or participated in. More than 30 years later, the documentary is being re-released. John Kalish reports.

Winter Soldier is a documentary which one experiences, instead of simply viewing. Over three days in January and February 1971, just a couple months before Lieutenant William Calley would be sentenced to life in prison for the My Lai Massacre (he would eventually serve less than four years), a group of Vietnam War veterans convened at a Howard Johnson in Detroit to testify about the atrocities they had witnessed or partaken in while serving in Vietnam. The conference was titled “The Winter Soldier Investigation,” after Thomas Paine: “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summertime soldier and the...

[Once a Marine, Always a Marine?] The anti-Vietnam War documentary Winter Soldier is having its first major theatrical release -- 34 years after it was made. An effort was made to release the controversial documentary "Winter Soldier" during John Kerry's failed 2004 presidential campaign, but industry insiders decided to hold the film back fearing a backlash against Kerry. But with the election safely behind them, "Winter Soldier" -- a documentary which alleges atrocities by U.S. troops in Vietnam -- is set for re-release and is once again causing a stir. The Village Voice reports that last year a movie executive balked at screening "Winter Soldier” during John Kerry’s run for president for fear that it would do him more harm than good. After Kerry won the...

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8 - Like a live hand grenade brought home from a distant battlefield, the 34-year-old antiwar documentary "Winter Soldier" has been handled for decades as if it could explode at any moment. Now, the 95-minute film - which has circulated like 16-millimeter samizdat on college campuses for decades but has never been accessible to a wide audience - is about to get its first significant theatrical release in the United States, beginning on Friday at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. (Other bookings, including Chicago, Detroit, Hartford and Minneapolis, can be found at www.wintersoldierfilm.com.) Its distributors say...

JOHN KERRY: AMBITION AND OPPORTUNISM As new information continues to becomes available about the radical activities and affiliations of John Kerry, one has to ask the following question -- did the KGB and the Communist Party USA use John Kerry to further their goals of a communist victory in Vietnam? The evidence strongly suggests that they did. -- snip -- As a former undercover member of several of the leading Communist-controlled "anti-war" movement national groups (member of National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam [Mobe]; founding conference member of New Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam...

Visiting with U.S. troops in Baghdad on Thursday, failed presidential candidate John Kerry trashed Commander-in-chief George Bush for making "horrendous judgments" and "unbelievable blunders" that have undermined the war effort. In a series of demoralizing comments first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the defeated Democrat griped, "What is sad about what's happening here now is that so much of it is a process of catching up from the enormous miscalculations and wrong judgments made in the beginning." Kerry said that because of the Bush administration's mistakes, "the job has been made enormously harder." Among the errors cited by the...

I've just returned from the annual Restoration Weekend I put on, this year at the Boca Resort in Boca Raton. The highlight of the event was the Saturday night banquet where we gave our Annie Taylor Award to the men who defeated the party of defeatism and the saboteurs of the war on terror in this last election. Annie Taylor was the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive. It is a fitting award for American heroes who were slandered and defamed while they were being tortured in Communist prisons by an American traitor who...

Tuesday, October 26, 2004 October Surprise? The Truth Behind Kerry's Military Discharge. What's Kerry Hiding?: "I have nothing to hide. I want you to ask me questions."--John Kerry, Reuters, August 3, 2004 The only 180 John Kerry hasn't accomplished in his litany of flip-flops throughout his campaign is Standard Form 180, the paperwork necessary for the complete release of his military records from the Department of Defense repository. The Kerry campaign and website continue to claim he has released all military records. In fact, they've released the few documents painting the senator in a favorable light. There are at...

Two recently discovered documents captured from the Vietnamese communists during the Vietnam War strongly support the contention that a close link existed between the Hanoi regime and the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) while John Kerry served as the group's leading national spokesman.
