DNA reveals ancient Croatian massacre was an indiscriminate killing

The remains of a group of people who died 6200 years ago in a massacre in Croatia have been genetically analysed to reveal their ages, sex and ancestry.

Mario Novak at the Institute for Anthropological Research in Zagreb, Croatia, and his colleagues retrieved DNA from 38 of 41 individuals found in a mass grave in Potočani, Croatia. The other three remains didn’t contain enough genetic material to sequence...

“There are at least 41 individuals of both sexes and almost all age groups – the youngest is about 2 years old and the oldest is about 50,” says Novak. Radiocarbon dating of each individual and layers of the mass grave indicated that they were killed and buried in 4200 BC.

The researchers found the grave contained 21 males and 20 females, and that half of them were under 17 years old at time of death. They saw evidence of head injuries on 13 of the skulls, with some individuals having up to four such injuries. These were probably caused by blunt weapons...

Their research also revealed that just 11 of the genetically analysed individuals were linked by family ties. All 38 individuals had a similar ancestry, with 91 per cent of their DNA coming from Anatolian Neolithic people and 9 per cent coming from Western European hunter-gatherers.

“This massacre was not orientated to a very specific part of the community or of a particular family,” says Novak. The people in this group were killed indiscriminately as there were members of both sexes, all age groups and several families – as opposed to other examples of massacres in prehistoric communities in the Copper Age. “Everyone was killed without exception,” he says.

Being a descendant, I think I’m entitled to reparations for this event.

Joe Biden, where’s my check?

Just one more reason to stay out of the Balkans.

About the time the English and French came along to North America, at least officially, wars of extermination were not unknown among the east coast natives.

Hmmm. Let’s see. Fifteen guys sitting around drinking the last of the summer wine. “That village over there just got done bringing in their harvest and has brewed their beer. We can go hunting and gathering in this cold rain or pay them a visit. What do you say guys?”

There seems to be a long history of massacres in that region. Jasenovac was one of the most brutal concentration camps during World War 2.

Can’t be. The Native American peoples all lived in peace and harmony from sea to shining sea until the evil White Supremacist Europeans came along. /s

There is an out for the Woke.

Europeans besides the Vikings were here before Columbus.

One suggestion I’m aware of is that, given the hazards of fishing anywhere where Muslims raided, it may be possible that fishermen from what we now call the British Isles were frequenting the rich fisheries off of the north east.

If so they were treating it as a trade secret.

Completely ignoring all the Woke nonsense, this suggestion holds out the possibility that there had been a continuum of European presence that nevertheless never amounted to a discovery because it was kept on the sly. This also means suggested Scottish (Sinclair) expeditions didn’t happen in a vacuum.

Now with respect to fishermen I would suggest that there may be a way to demonstrate their presence. Shipping fish back would need them to be processed in some way, either salted and dried or pickled, so they’d still be edible ... well, at least by the standards of the day. That would mean some seasonal processing capacity on this side of the pond which was in a place where the locals might not stir up trouble or confiscate any built up infrastructure (note, I’m not assuming a colony but just an outpost), say an island off Nova Scotia or some such.

Mario Novak says everyone was killed without exception. How does he know that no one got away and didn't get killed with the others?

900 years before the Iceman.

He probably watched the surviving surveillance tape, and/or reviewed their cell phone records. /rimshot

Probably one village massacred the other, must have been pretty pissed off about something. OTOH, they may have been killed off by their fellow villagers because they were all suffering from some illness.

A more detailed report says that the Y-DNA haplogroups found were G2, I2 and C-V20. No R1a or R1b-M269 individuals were found (those haplogroups are now very common in Europe but are believed to have been brought in later from the steppes).

The I2 haplogrpup is now very common in Croatia and Bosnia (65% of the men on Hvar, for example); it dates back to c. 25,000 to 13,000 years ago (so Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic...or "Western European hunter-gatherer ancestry").

G-2a has been found at Neolithic sites in Europe back to 3000 to 5000 B.C.--they are thought to be Neolithic farmers from Anatolia.

C-V20 is now found in low frequencies in southern Europe (more common in parts of Asia and elsewhere) but has been found in Spain and Hungary about 5000 B.C. and in Belgium and Moravia (Czechia) as far back as 30,000 to 35,000 years ago. So definitely "hunter-gatherer" types.
