The first particles have been injected into the biggest atom smasher on the planet, marking the start of the countdown to probing the secrets of the universe.
Scientists are pushing ahead with powering up the machine, shrugging off speculative fears that it could destroy all life on Earth by sucking it into a black hole.
Starting up the biggest scientific experiment ever built is not as simple as flipping a switch.

Actually, I’m not asking about the odds, I’m asking if anyone has calculated the rate at which the mass of the surroundings woul dbe incorporated if indeed a blackhole is formed that does not evaporate immediately in Hawking radiation.
Any mini black holes (if they were to form) wouldn’t be massive enough to endure.

Yup, this is probably what caused the big bang, you know. And it just happens over and over and over...

It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
There was supposed to be an earth shattering KABOOM!
I just think it would be so humiliating to be destroyed by something called a strangelet.

They used that song on an end of the world (ok, end of the US) sort of movie with Anthony Edwards in it years ago. Just a bit of goofy trivia stuck in my head (I have enough goofy trivia to fill a black hole, I think).

This reminds me, I know my insurance policies don't cover acts of God. I'll have to check to see if they have a mad physicist clause as well...
Just make sure you have the singularity rider on your policy. Of course, I think it may be difficult to cash the check afterwards....

ROTF!
Will add you as soon as I get a chance and am back at the home computer. :’)
Well, please do it before we are all enveloped and crushed in a black hole!! ;)
