Thorium, Heavy Rare Earths, China & the Loss of Manufacturing Jobs
Youtube ^ | 10 Oct 2011 | thoriumremix

Posted on 10/15/2011 5:44:18 PM PDT by Errant

Thorium policy in all western nations undermines the successful development of a domestic rare earth market. All of the rare earths that most western mining companies are willing to process are what they call bastnasites or carbonatites. They select these rare earths not because of the high ratios of rare earths but simply the absence of thorium.

Manufacturers using rare earth elements in their products are relocating their manufacturing base inside China. The jobs in manufacturing transfer from the United States and western Europe into the Chinese mainland.

thorium reactors are basically a nuclear powerplant that does not require a boiler. it is fascinating. However there are ultra super critical boilers in the works that will run on coal that I think will cause the thorium people all sorts of fits.

BTTT

A fascinating video - once you start watching you will not be able to stop. This is the one we’ve been waiting for!

I’m sending this link to Herman Cain.

Let me explain why this is so important.

There is a huge demand for rare earth elements, yet China is the primary producer of them. One reason is because a radioactive element called thorium is typically found along with the rare earths, and thus is ‘free’. Yet over 50 years ago, US scientists designed a means of using this material in a safe, low-pressure, yet efficient reactor called a Molten Salt Reactor, or MSR. The video describes how this product of American exceptionalism is being used by the Chinese, while US officials fiddle around.

Well worth watching.

“...The jobs in manufacturing transfer from the United States and western Europe into the Chinese mainland...”

::::::::::::

Gee, maybe it has something to do with excessive confiscatory taxation and destructive regulation...just maybe?? The Obama agenda.

Much more information in a Goggle Tech Talk presentation by Dr. Joe Bonometti.

The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor: What Fusion Wanted To Be

Dr. Bonometti has extensive engineering experience in the government, within industry, and in academia over a 25-year career. Recently completing an assignment as the NASA Chair Professor at the Naval Post graduate School, he supported a ship design study that utilized advanced nuclear power derived from thorium. Working at NASA for ten years as a technology manager, lead systems engineer, nuclear specialist, and propulsion researcher, he lead several NASA tiger teams in evaluating the Nuclear System Initiatives fission demonstration vehicle and missions. He managed the Emerging Propulsion Technology Area for in-space systems, the Marshall Air Launch team, as well as a variety of other power and propulsion assignments and is now the Lead Systems Engineer for the Ares I-Y flight. After earning a Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Alabama in Huntsville, he spent several years as a Research Scientist & Senior Research Engineer at the UAH Propulsion Research Center where he served as a Principal Investigator and manager for the Solar Thermal Laboratory. He has worked as a Senior Mechanical Designer at Pratt & Whitney supporting aircraft engine manufacturing and at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory within the laser fusion program. A graduate from the United States Military Academy, at West Point, where he studied nuclear physics and engineering, Dr. Bonometti served as an officer in the United States Army Corps of Engineers; both in combat and district engineering management assignments. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Virginia, and has authored numerous aerospace technical publications, particularly propulsion and space systems technologies. His technical expertise includes nuclear engineering, specialized mechanical & materials research, space plasmas & propulsion, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and space systems engineering.

Energy Secretary Chu on Thorium Reactors

This shows why private citizens and companies must take responsibility ourselves to avert a coming energy crisis. The Obama administration sucks at everything...

It is wasting billions and billions of dollars on solar and wind technologies that can't possibly meet the needs of the country but is making his supporters much richer.

Far more promising than the mystical, magical, cold fusion water heater, which by the way, is about to change the world, make energy cheap, and possibly bring back the Stanley Steamer Auto.

I’m still thinking about this thorium business. I do not believe it is the perfect solution the thorium people claim.

HOWEVER...one thing is certain, we SHOULD NOT be using oil or natural gas to produce one kilowatt of electrical power. The thorium reactor appears to have rapid start up capabilities like a nat gas plant has. so it seems to me that alone makes thorium important to develop.

Thorium reactors also appear to me to be ideal for the navy.

Thank you for posting this.

BTW, I used the recent market swoon to pick up some Molycorp stock with an average price of 30. The stock has gotten a bit ahead of itself now, but is worth looking at sub-35, IMO...

Bogdan Maglich recounted his 1989 research into breeding U-233 using "EXYDER" fusion neutron source. EXYDER could provide an additional source of U-233 for catalysing fission in LFTRs.
