Congress May Bring Back The Draft
The Partisan ^ | Nick

On July 15, 2010, Democrat Charles Rangle introduced a piece of legislation into Congress that would basically reinstate the draft (compulsory military service). H.R. 5741 will give the President of the United States the power to require all American citizens between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform either military service or civilian service in the interests of "national defense and homeland security." It would also give him the power to require citizens to join the military during wartime to meet the manpower needs of the military.

In February 2009, President Barack Obama asked Congress to send him a bipartisan bill in favor of "national service." Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel outline a plan similar to H.R. 5741 in his book The Plan.

Under this new legislation, nearly every American will be forced into two years of military or security service. Even conscientious objectors will be unable to avoid this new draft. Instead, they would have to choose noncombatant or civilian service, which will be defined by the President.

“Only cowards ran out and got married, had a child, enrolled in college, went to Canada or ran to the National Guard/Reserves to avoid the draft.”

How old are you?

I ask this only because I am the wife of a Viet Nam vet, and I’m trying to figure out what you’re saying.

I do know that you think some folks were cowards...do you have any experience or knowledge of times back then?

It won’t go anywhere, Bo is getting ready to take a hatchet to the defense budget so upping the manpower will be out of the question.

You can never be too sure w/ liberals. They cut here and then tax more there. Barry N0bama cuts military spending and then goes along w/ Rangel to reinstate the draft. It’s not even a draft it’s a “civil service” thing meaning every American will be obligated to work for Barry for two years after HS. That is pure gov. control.

A comment on the blog said.

Anonymous said... I read a lot of the bill. This is not a draft as you know it. It is a forced induction into Obama's "civilian army", and the victims of the bill are subject not to acts of Congress, but to the whims and fancies of "the president". This is a very dangerous thing. Read it for yourself: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-5741 August 1, 2010 8:03 PM

So yes everyone will be drafted as part of N0bama's own red army.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I don't propose that all of them go into the military, at least not the parts of it that would result in battle assignments. I feel like they can perform "service" jobs and do so in a strict disciplinary setting. Just one small example would be guarding the border, relieving the National Guard of that duty. It is the disciplinary lifestyle that I think would benefit them.

I started thinking about this a few months ago when we visited an Air Force base for a couple of days with friends - golf outing. It was so impressive to see all those young people training so diligently. They were all so fit and you could see a purpose in them. I simply thought it would be good if all young people were required to go through a couple of years of a real challenge before setting out in life. I haven't thought through the details necessarily. My main fear is that the DEMS would turn it into a "community service corps" and have punks knocking on doors, acting entitled to come into your house to "check things out".

Right now, kids get out of school and many have no future - they have never had the kind of upbringing that creates self discipline and mature responsibility. They know their future is bleak and give up before they even try.

Maybe we could turn some of them around.

I just can't get you to recognize the fact that I proposed a "service" program for youths, not just a draft into military service. Some people would choose the military route. Others might choose to help with community needs, or serve the military in clerical or support assignments. I guess I am gullible enough to believe that some would actually choose traditional military training. (I do think these should receive higher pay).

My main point was that a lot of kids would benefit from a couple of years of structured discipline before going on to college or starting a career. Would a program like this be complicated? Yes! Would it be vulnerable to political abuse turning it into a "green corps" or some other powder-puff parade? Yes it would be vulnerable! But, I stand by the idea that a well-intentioned and strictly run service corps could be beneficial to young people and help communities. I stand by the proposition that failure to participate or failure to cooperate would result in a loss of future benefits from the taxpayers.

Today, we see too many kids who graduate and have no goals in life, other than downloading the next app on their smart phone or, even worse, stealing a smart phone because no one bothered to give them one. My idea was intended to address this issue. Give the kids some direction. You say that it is the parents job to do this and I agree. But, the fact is, many aren't doing it and never will.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I stated my opinion with both experience and knowledge of the times. I, too, am the wife of a VN Vet. USMC ‘68-’69 radio operator and he was in the bush so I know of what I speak.

My opinion is based on personal experiences and with people I knew back in the day, who did just what I cited as cowardly. I am not unique in that so I have to wonder why you are not “getting it”. Thanks for your response though and thank your husband for his service.

Thank your husband for me...and thank you as the wife of a Viet Nam vet.

However, your memory and mine differ somewhat.

You seem so bitter...

“As for now, I think this is a “reverse draft”, with many social factors that are still forcing youngsters to join the military to survive. (poor economy, to wit)”

While you might be correct in the “now” part...maybe during the past year...we’ve had a voluntary military for a very long time, and they are excellent.

It works better than the draft as those people WANT to serve, instead of being forced to serve.

And...no...I’m not getting your drift WRT this part of your post.

“Now, here’s the real issue: We, the people, are not being heard. So, you want to volunteer for your country or do I have to force you? Get my drift? ;)”

You still sound so bitter...

Maybe we are of the same mind...but we’re having a hard time getting there. ;o)

That being said, to say that those who tried not to be drafted were cowards is beyond despicable.

Yes and also b/c the youth of today are way more liberal then they were 40 years ago thanks to all the liberal media and liberal teachers feeding them Marxism-light. Go on any liberal college campus and you'll find anti-troop garbage everywhere. I don't think I want to depend on these brainwashed liberal youth for my and Americas security.

I guess I hold a grudge against people who didn’t answer the call but side-stepped it by going to Canada, joining the NG or Reserves (back then their units stayed home except for 2 weeks in the summer and one weekend a month - they didn’t serve in-country) and never saw battle. They were afraid and took the easy way out by avoiding being inducted into a situation where they would have to risk their life. That’s cowardly.

As for my statement about volunteering for your country or being forced, I’m referring to BO’s plan for everyone to serve in his personal army. It has been discussed on FR and it’s basically a draft with a new name but nobody will be exempt so it’s back to square one. Join the military and fight, for those who aren’t cowards, or join BO’s army and serve without much risk. Can’t wait to see how this turns out.

BTW, it’s been nice chatting with you. Although you may not agree with my terminology, you remain quite civil and I admire that.

Respectfully...my daughter has been on one of the Oregon university campuses for most of the past 10 years. She had to deal with liberalism, but she is more conservative than she was before she entered the system.

I think there are people who don’t give our young people enough credit. I, also, believe there are many young people who were caught up in the cult of Obama, and now regret their choice.

At this moment...as we speak...there are young people, college grads...who can’t get a job. Even under Carter they were able to flip burgers. But, those jobs are manned by illegals in Oregon.

I feel for our young educated people. They are getting hit upside the head with reality. However, they asked for it.

Thank YOU for your most civil post. ;o) And, thank you for your explanation. I can understand why you are upset at the draft dodgers...and I think of those who fled to Canada or some other foreign country, to be draft dodgers.

But, I can also understand why some people did their best to get out of the draft. They, simply, weren’t cut out for that job. Those in the military now WANT to be there! And, God bless ‘em for it.

However, this grudge you are holding does nothing but hurt you. I hope you are able to get over it soon. A lot of water has passed under that bridge...

Good advice, dixie, but one has to nurse a grudge and I really don’t dwell on the past. I just responded with my opinion on that time period. I will look for you on the boards, you are a very nice person. Take care.

I have a feeling the new distrust for N0bama comes from them thinking he isn't socialist ENOUGH.

I feel for our young educated people. They are getting hit upside the head with reality. However, they asked for it.

I agree w/ you on that. But I don't think we should bring back the draft. Most of these kids are so brainwashed by socialist propaganda they'd be more eager to help the enemy then defeat it.

This has nothing to do with the draft or the military service.

This has everything to do with creating a national security force, commanded by Obama, and meant to terrorize citizens into obedience to Das Reich.

We are truly witnessing what happened in 1930's Germany.

N0bama joins the ranks of Hitler, Stalin and Mao.

If you read the original post you'll see the blogger is a communist and is probly supporting the future N0bama youth

The gov. needs to stay out of our pesonal lives once and for all. That's why I'm voting Ron Paul in 2012. I'M SICK OF THE GOV. I want the constitution back.

“I have a feeling the new distrust for N0bama comes from them thinking he isn’t socialist ENOUGH.”

For some of them...yes. But, for most, they are growing up, and growing into the “new normal”, and I think they don’t like it one bit.

“But I don’t think we should bring back the draft.”

Nor do I!!! Not one bit! Rangel is the one who has been trying to bring back the draft. I think that right there makes my case. ;o)

“Most of these kids are so brainwashed by socialist propaganda they’d be more eager to help the enemy then defeat it.”

They are young...

If you’re not liberal when you’re young, then you have no heart.
If your not conservative when you’re older, then you have no brain.

They are still growing...

And, thank God...if trends are correct...they won’t be voting in November!

Obama isn’t on the ticket...

Hey, you! Good to see you!

You are absolutely right in your thinking, but it ain’t gonna work!

The Country Class is being pissed off, and assaulted, on a daily basis. I agree with Pat Cadell...it’s pre-revolutionary. As has been said many times...it’s Carter on steriods...and the citizens of this great country won’t take it lying down.

Mark my words...I have faith in the Country Class.
