They're usually thought of as a brutish, primitive species.
So what woman would want to give birth to a Neanderthal baby?
Yet this incredible scenario is the plan of one of the worlds leading geneticists, who is seeking a volunteer to help bring mans long-extinct close relative back to life.
Professor George Church of Harvard Medical School believes he can reconstruct Neanderthal DNA and resurrect the species which became extinct 33,000 years ago.
His scheme is reminiscent of Jurassic Park but, while in the film dinosaurs were created in a laboratory, Professor Churchs ambitious plan requires a human volunteer.
He said his analysis of Neanderthal genetic code using samples from bones is complete enough to reconstruct their DNA.
He said: Now I need an adventurous female human.
It depends on a hell of a lot of things, but I think it can be done.
Professor Churchs plan would begin by artificially creating Neanderthal DNA based on genetic code found in fossil remains. He would put this DNA into stem cells.
These would be injected into cells from a human embryo in the early stages of life.
It is thought that the stem cells would steer the development of the hybrid embryo on Neanderthal lines, rather than human ones.
He says Neanderthals were not the lumbering brutes of the stereotype, but highly intelligent. Their brains were roughly the same size as mans, and they made primitive tools. Cloning the caveman: Geneticist Professor George Church

He believes his project could benefit mankind.
He told German magazine Der Spiegel: Neanderthals might think differently than we do. They could even be more intelligent than us.

This isn’t a PING...
Seems to me that two animals that can successfully mate and produce fertile offspring are of the same species. This seems to be the case between homo sapiens and the humans we call neandrathals.
“What will he think about those who created him and then put him in a world where he is the ugliest man alive. Even if he has a great personality, how will near universal rejection affect him?”
What if he is a she? Then she won’t have to worry as much, because no matter how ugly she is, some man will go there.
Some of us are proof that although Neanderthals are extinct, their genes may not be.
Normal for a neanderthal.
Why are scientists deadset determined to create "sub-human" life-forms that are not extended the same basic protections of life? Is it so they have their "trial set" of near-human guinea pigs for medical experimentation? For labor?
At the same time eugenicists are urging the abortion of those who have birth defects or the euthanizing of those who "cost the State and contribute nothing" later in life?
“And, suppose he has no social consciousness at all? What if he isnt even close to human? What then?”
He’ll register as a Democrat.
Ping.
Hell register as a Democrat.
And become the first Neanderthal president of the United States(D). Another historical moment.
I was going to say,”To Bad Stanley Ann Dunham isn’t around anymore, she has already done it once”
Yea, I believe so. And what about that guy from Encino.
Your words are hurtful, Rider , I'm not going to the Ice Cream Social with you anymore !!!!
I can envision the Geraldo Special already.
He might be a good football player or New Hulk Hogan, Might make one heck of a Marine or hunter. Could be a great cop. Might be a Republican. We don’t know. He may have things we do not-—He might be more sentimental—artistic? We just don’t know.
The kid will get the nickname Bitmytitoff
paging ann dunham, ann dunham...
I’m sure. A Neanderthaloid used to live across the street from me. But I still dont think we should be manipulating those genes to bring them back.
I think I know where there is a female wookie if that’s a close enough DNA match.

Thanks Red Badger, and thanks a fool in paradise for the non-ping. Two earlier topics about this, at least that I know of, but as may be common knowledge, GGG pings stopped about a month ago, while the list continues to be maintained, and people continue to join. |
