DNA hint of European origin for dogs
BBC ^ | 14 November 2013 Last updated at 14:32 ET | Jonathan Amos

Earlier DNA studies have suggested the modern pooch - in all its shapes and sizes - could track its beginnings back to wolves that attached themselves to human societies in the Middle East or perhaps in East Asia as recently as 15,000 years ago.

The problem with these claims is that palaeontologists have found fossils of distinctly dog-looking animals that are 30,000 years old or more.

Dr Thalmann, from Finland's University of Turku, and his team, have had another go at trying to sort through the conflicting DNA evidence.

They compared genetic sequences from a wide range of ancient animals - both dogs and wolves - with material taken from living canines - again, from both dogs and wolves.

,,,

This analysis reveals modern dogs to be most closely related to ancient European wolves or dogs - not to any of the wolf groups from outside Europe, nor even to modern European wolves (suggesting the link is with old European wolves that are now extinct). And because the dog remains used in the research are dated to be more than 18,000 years old, it indicates a timing for domestication that is much older than some researchers have previously argued.

American indians had dogs too. Pretty sure those dogs did not originate in Europe 15,000 years ago.

And they don’t use deodorant or shave under their arms...

Their horses came from the Spanish, but the dogs were here before the Spanish.

There is evidence that Europeans have gone to China 15,000 years ago or more, so it’s possible that the ancestors of Indians acquired them from Europeans.

Well of course. My Great Pyrennes are among the closest breeds to wolves, among others.

Man has created so many different looking dogs. A lhasa apso looks nothing like a greyhound. A Dachsund has no resemblance to a Pomeranian. All these dog breeds have evolved from one source..wolves! Just imagine if man could create such variety in 30,000 years or less, what can nature do in 1,000,000,000,000 years since origin of life on earth. No wonder there are Billions of different species on earth.

There are camels in America.

Llama, guanaco, vicuña and alpaca are all part of the camel family.

There were larger camels in North America in the past. They died out at the same time that a lot of other big animals went extinct.

Related to, and evolved from, are two different things.

Dogs did NOT evolve from wolves....that is ignorant.

There are still wolves. smh.

30,000? How about a thousand or less for most breeds. I doubt the Flintstones had a Chihuahua. (It was a little brontosaurus, wasn’t it, named Dino?)
Terriers from Scotland. Rotties from Germany. Bulldogs and bird dogs from England. All bred for specific purposes. Artificial selection, and over centuries, not millennium or epochs. Your point is well taken.
Long live dogs, mans best friends!

I was trying to be generous. My point being species can change and evolve to suit needs and conditions.

Not all wolves needed to evolve into dogs.

Tribes of primitive people befriended “friendly” wolves who hung around their huts because they usually received scraps of animals hunted for food. Those wolves did not need to hunt anymore, and became part of the people “pack”.

That is the most plausible explanation of the creation theory.
