Former Socialist senator who converted to Catholicism calls for end to abortion

Mercedes Aroz

Madrid, Nov 26, 2008 / 02:46 pm (CNA).- During the “Catholics and Public Life” congress in Spain this week, former senator Mercedes Aroz, who a year ago announced her conversion to the Catholic faith and departure from the Socialist Party of Catalonia, called for the abolition of abortion in Spain to bring about true progress in the advancement of human rights.

Aroz, who was elected handily to the Senate in 2004, underscored that “Spanish society today is a secularized society similar to the rest of Western Europe in which God is no longer the universal point of reference.”  This change “has led to a crisis of moral values” and the loss of a moral compass for individuals, and “unease in the cultural in general,” she explained.

However, she acknowledged that “Catholicism continues to be relatively in the majority and a Catholic-based culture continues to subsist.  Therefore favorable conditions exist for Christianity to flourish again.”

“We need to put forth the abolition of abortion for what it is: a progressive objective, the advancement of civilization, as the legal recognition of human rights, and their expansion is the fruit of progress of the human being in the understanding of his reality and his dignity as a person,” she said.

Sorry, I meant, “raise” up saints. I hate it when I don’t check my grammar.

You don’t need to be religious to see theres something wrong with the idea of abortion. Killing babies for society convenience is barbaric

All people who abhor abortion ought to henceforth proclaim the pro-life movement as the civil rights issue of the 21st century! The silly gay lobby is trying to claim their movement as the new civil rights movement, but that is not so. It’s the rights of the unborn who are being slaughtered that need to be recognized as a civil rights issue!!!!!

>> abortion is not a religious issue, but a human right issue

I agree, it’s about humanity. But that doesn’t mean it’s not an issue for the faithful among us.

We can argue it’s neither a political nor religious issue because, without either, the effects of abortion are still the same. In making the humanity point, however, the secular argument for abortion is reduced to its knees, where it should have been in the first place.

If the USofA doesn’t heed God’s call, He’ll find someone in Spain. After all, we are all His children.
