Exposure by Free Republic Forces Huffington Post to Pull Article Threatening Glenn Beck
Monday, August 30, 2010 | Kristinn

Posted on 08/30/2010 9:12:45 AM PDT by kristinn

The Huffington Post has pulled an article published this morning targeting Glenn Beck with a $100,000 bounty after news of the threat was broken on Free Republic.

The article, titled $100,000 For Glenn Beck's Sex Tapes has been replaced with the following message:

Editor's Note: This piece was published directly to the Huffington Post by its author. It didn't meet our editorial standards and has been removed from the site.

The URL for the pulled article reflects the title: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/beau-friedlander/100000-for-glenn-becks-se_b_698724.html

The author of the threat, Beau Friedlander, is the former editor-in-chief of Air America.

Here is the text of Friedlander's call for information to destroy Beck:

It is time to pop the tea baggers' favorite balloon (so what if it will be replaced by another?), and with that in mind I hereby offer to negotiate a $100,000 payday to the person who will come forward with a sex tape or phone records or anything else that succeeds in removing Glenn Beck from the public eye forever. I am not offering the cash myself, but I will broker the deal and/or raise the money for what you bring to the table. (And it better be good.)

If you have the goods, or if you want to contribute to a slush fund to buy more takedowns (probably not tax deductible), please contact me at: glennbecksextape@gmail.com.

The Free Republic article was posted at 9:19 a.m. EDT, and was immediately picked up by several Tweeters and bloggers who used the Free Republic headline without attribution or just plain stole the article from FR.

The news about the Huffington Post threat reached critical mass when it was reported by Newsbusters.

Free Republic has proven yet again that its value in the conservative blogosphere even as FR enters its 14th year online next month.

If real scandalous data can’t be found—they will make up stuff

It's already been tried -- only look how many FReepers were posting, "If this is true ..." to the admitted-on-the-very-page concocted story about the rape? And that was just on this site, the imagination is staggered at the thought of what people were posting on other sites/blogs.

How in the world does running for office put a stop to this ridiculousness? Glenn Beck does not need to run for some position in public office, he does more public service by hosting his daily radio and TV programs.

Yes, IMO he is.

I’m catching up, and will read theses threads more thoroughly later. Meanwhile, does anyone know if Beau is his given name? Is his first name Edward?

PING! (See also my previous post.)

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/08/fashion/08BEAU.html?pagewanted=all

Mr. Friedlander grew up in Redding, Conn., in what he called a “typical fractured middle-class family.” His mother died of a brain hemorrhage when he was 17, he said. When he was 25, his stepfather, a heavy drinker and smoker, died as well. As Mr. Friedlander put it, “He died of her dying.”

Mr. Friedlander traces his political awakening to St. Luke’s prep school in New Canaan, Conn.

“They liked to create inhibited young boys and girls,” he said, “and my inhibition never kicked in.”

After college at Bennington, he earned a master’s degree in English romantic literature at Oxford University and another master’s in Scandinavian literature at Columbia, before trying a short-term gig at Knopf. He started Context with his life savings — $10,000 — and with a dream of discovering and publishing great fiction. He set up shop in the dingy windowless cell he still occupies on lower Broadway with a single assistant, but finding the next Faulkner or Fitzgerald wasn’t so easy.

An Apology to Glenn Beck

Earlier today I posted something on Huffington Post that was taken down by the staff there. I can accept and respect their reasons for doing that.

The post was called “$100,000 For Glenn Beck’s Sex Tape.” It was supposed to simply make the point that the right does not hesitate to play rough with the left, and the right is far better financed. It was glib, but finally off-kilter and misdirected.

I was actually trying to mimic what I saw as the way right wingers go about these matters, and by misapprehending the way they do things, I went too far. (I offered to broker a deal for anyone who had damaging media pertaining to Glenn Beck.)

First, I owe Glenn Beck an apology. I crossed the line. On the off chance something comes in over the transom...scratch that; I’ll delete the email account. Problem solved.

I meant to tilt at a windmill in the post, and I planted my lance in the dirt.

A friend commented:

The people on the left who parrot and jerk their knees are just as much an obstacle to an outcome that benefits the maximum number of people as the “sheepies” are.

Well said, Struan. For me, it is back to the drawing board.
