Columbus blamed for Little Ice Age

Depopulation of Americas may have cooled climate

MINNEAPOLIS — By sailing to the New World, Christopher Columbus and the other explorers who followed may have set off a chain of events that cooled Europe’s climate for centuries.

The European conquest of the Americas decimated the people living there, leaving large areas of cleared land untended. Trees that filled in this territory pulled billions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, diminishing the heat-trapping capacity of the atmosphere and cooling climate, says Richard Nevle, a geochemist at Stanford University.

“We have a massive reforestation event that’s sequestering carbon … coincident with the European arrival,” says Nevle, who described the consequences of this change October 11 at the Geological Society of America annual meeting.

Tying together many different lines of evidence, Nevle estimated how much carbon all those new trees would have consumed. He says it was enough to account for most or all of the sudden drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide recorded in Antarctic ice during the 16th and 17th centuries. This depletion of a key greenhouse gas, in turn, may have kicked off Europe’s so-called Little Ice Age, centuries of cooler temperatures that followed the Middle Ages.

NO, a facepalm won’t do. This requires beat head on desk or large tree.

Incredible.

And I thought that settlement would cause MORE land to be cleared.

Silly me. I should know better than to think about such loft things that are out of the reach of understanding of a mere mortal engineer.

Clearly, the author has prowess and a degree in SCIENCE!

It’s those pesky white people again.

This is just another angle La Raza and Indians will clamp onto to further their own racism and also their own claims we have no legal right to be here, blah blah blah.

As if those people didn’t fight us or each other before we colonized here. Or when some tribe took over an area of another tribe. Gimme a break. They’re fortunate to have survived, many cultures - including theirs - killed off ALL the losers of battles. They were genocidal because they weren’t going to have any descendants coming back for possible retribution.

Comes out the day after (Real) Columbus Day: coincidence? I think not!

Now they don’t want to just blame him for the “destruction” of the New World, but also blame him for freezing Europe to death as well.

They really hate that dead white guy.

(In before Sunkenciv pings me to it!)

I would call him a postmodernist trying to manipulate people through creating a new “narrative”. In other words, he is a lying sack of fertilizer.

So, in order to stop global warming we have to kill Indians?

So the Indians in North America had cleared the continent of trees? So they could run their vast farming system? And they caused global warming at the time? (BAD Indians!!) Then the Euros came over and let the trees grow back after they killed off the Indians? And the Euros didn’t need all that cleared land because they didn’t grow food?

I see.

More anti-Columbus horse crap scooped up by commies. Anytime someone tosses that fecal matter at me I always reply “I wonder how the natives would have done if, for some reason, Ghengis Khan or Tamerlane had come here instead?”

So, clear cutting by Indians good. Clear cutting by white man bad.

It was globally cooler then, so the Indians clearing land kept needed CO^2 in the atmosphere to keep people and crops from freezing to death.

White Man clearing is being done when it is Anthropogenically Globally Warmer, and the trees are needed to extract excess CO^2 from the atmosphere to keep people and crops and the entire earth from thriving burning up.

How do I know? Saint Gore sells me so! ALL PRAISES TO THE HOLY AL!

I KNEW IT!!! Columbus and his band of polluters came over here, offloaded a bunch of SUVs and caused the Little Ice Age!!!

That's it, Chris, we're taking your day away!!! (We already "celebrated" it, anyway.)

(No wonder people don't take science or scientists seriously. There's too much laughable crap like this.)

Thanks ApplegateRanch.

The clearing of the land took place in order to A) sell the lumber, B) build, C) heat and cook, D) run machinery (steam engines were heated using plentiful wood), and E) turn the landscape into farmland and pastures.

IOW, the land was tended.

After mechanized ag took off in the 20th c, the amount of land under cultivation fell (no more need to feed the draft animals), and secondary growth forests sprang up.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.
