Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

If anyone lives in a big city, they had better have a way out of the city that can be used at a moments notice or be building an Omega Man home.

It took 4 days to get FEMA into Florida after Andrew.

And to the race baiters who have been saying the response took so long in NO because the victims were black, this article disproves that disgusting notion.

"You know I'm sitting here listening to Steve Harrigan talk about a woman 50 yards from him dying. WHY THE HELL DON'T YOU PUT THE STINKING MICROPHONE DOWN FOR A FEW MINUTES, GET THE WOMAN SOME FOOD AND WATER AND @&^@#$^#^) BE AN AMERICAN HELPING ANOTHER AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

He probably feels he can help more people by being on-air and bringing attention to their plight.

The next riot in Los Angeles will be far worse, since we have millions more invaders in our midst.

That's Saturday night, BTW, and I believe taken from an interview he gave on WWL-TV at 10:00 PM CDT.

The next day he was interviewed and when questioned about something re: hurricane, said he had not been in touch with the Gov. that morning because he had to go to the airport.

What, you think the media is camped on a bridge showing the same film loop over and over again instead of going where the action is? They could have shot some tape at the staging areas and broadcast those over and over, it would have communicated an entirely different message -- Like one of hope for the people of NO, help is on the way.

You are so right, the media knows you can't mobilize this level of effort over night. The hurricane left Monday night and it's Friday.

Shep Smith is a camera clown. The more I see of him the less I like.

The City of Los Angeles Homeland Security guy just left due to lack of support.

Left NO? Or resigned his post in Los Angeles?

I can't believe that in hurricane country, the public isn't told how to be prepared. I live in earthquake country, and you can bet it's pounded into us. You know the routine--batteries, radio, meds, insurance papers, WATER and FOOD--and told to be prepared to not expect help for at least 72 hours... I'm starting to get mad...

The President IS out there touring and talking to people. he IS leading, and as for the rubble of 9-11? That was spontaneous. Basically you want the President to stage a "Bullhorn" moment. he does that and it will NOT be authentic, it would be crass on the bodies of the dead, and he'd be rightly ripped to shreds for acting like a Democrat.

The President is an authentic man concentrating on making sure relief carries forward efficiently. Stop asking for him to be anything but and instead counter the unjust MSM/DNC attack squad politicizing deaths.

I don't know all the names, but know I read he received credit for a good economy that was partly created by multiple hurricane disasters in Florida during his years as President.... disasters end up helping the economy big-time...

Was Andrew under Clinton or Bush 41? All I know is Clinton at least had the intellectual integrity not to let CNN trash the President over this yesterday, this is one task he knows is overwhelming.

Actually Bush should be applauded for thinking to sign a declaration declaring a disaster area long before the Hurricane hit.

It was the Louisiana authorities that sat on their buts and ignored the situation.

Maybe, but a simple meal and some water in quick time may be all she needs to survive. I understand that for the larger picture its getting medical care down there, but person to person help is just as important.
