Figures. Obama Confuses Memorial Day With Veterans Day Again

The American Battle Monuments Commission maintains the U.S. cemetery in Normandy, France. The cemetery is situated on a cliff overlooking the English Channel. The 172-acre cemetery contains the graves of 9,387 U.S. servicemembers, most of whom died on D-Day, June 6, 1944. (Courtesy photo)

Last year Barack Obama made the mistake of recognizing dead veterans in the audience(?) during his Memorial Day speech in Las Cruces, New Mexico:

On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.
Here's the video:

Memorial Day, of course, is a time to commemorate U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. On Veterans Day we salute our military men and women.

Well, he just did it again during his Memorial Day lecture to the country.
The AP reported:

President Barack Obama saluted veterans and urged his countrymen to do the same this Memorial Day weekend, saying the nation has not always paid them proper respect.

In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama said people can honor veterans by sending a letter or care package to troops overseas, volunteering at health clinics or taking supplies to a homeless veterans center. He said it could also mean something as simple as saying "thank you" to a veteran walking by on the street.

"We have a responsibility to serve all of them as well as they serve all of us," Obama said. "And yet, all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve.
Speak for yourself, Barack.

So, how’s that magic stimulus working out? Unemployment numbers worse than projected:

The actual numbers aren’t just worse than the rosy picture Obama painted for a world after his magical stimulus took effect. They’re worse even than the doomsday scenario he outlined if Congress didn’t pass his stimulus plan.

At ten-thirty Monday morning our quiet little town honors her war dead. I and my wife will attend, seeing old friends, sharing thoughts, feelings and memories with others of a similar mind set. So many flags, so many graves, so many reasons……and all for us. I wrote this once, some have seen it. I share it again…..

I sit subdued…hello folks;
Emotionally such as a wrung out dish rag, I sit subdued.
I would like to share this with you……
As I prepared to dress for the Memorial…..pondering, what to wear?
After all, this is a Baptist church.
I chose a striped red and white shirt, along with new blue jeans.
And my blue ball cap….
On the way out, remembering, grabbing the colors, flying them in front of my home.
Departing, loping along towards our destination some half mile distant.
Turning left, noting the full dress veterans standing by the entrance, this American man and his American wife parked their American truck in front of an American church.
I heard a voice, “Hey! I was hoping you would come!”
Turning, recognizing one of these men, the old Marine I spoke with just last week, donating five bucks for disabled vets, acknowledging my respect for the Corps.
Smiling, he took my hand…”Thank you for coming! Step inside, it’s all in there.”
That proved to be an understatement, but I knew I belonged.
Removing my hat, stuffing it in a back pocket, stepping forward inside the church.
What a pretty place, tasteful, yet not ostentatious at all. Very quiet and dignified.
The wife and I took a pew in the back, immediately in front of the honor guard.
Quietly, we waited, soaking up the ambiance, admiring the artwork.
Then I picked up a program, Old Glory covering the front.
To open it…….
Suddenly the cadence of drumbeats, slowly the honor guard from Dos Palos High School marched down the aisle, saluting the Veterans of Foreign Wars seated behind us, pausing in front of the flags up front, finally taking their own seats.
The Pastor, an older, dignified gentleman, approached the podium, the congregation silent.
Smiling “I’m glad you all came. Seems we have a full house. Would you all stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance?”
As a unit, we stood, placing my hand over my heart……one voice, from one people..
“I pledge allegiance, to the flag,
Of the United States of America.
And to the republic, for which it stands;
One nation, under God,
Indivisible,
With liberty and justice for all.”
The Pastor again, “Please remain standing, join me in the first stanza of our National Anthem.
We did.
Again, one voice from one people….slowly the last words fading to silence.
“Please be seated.”
Suddenly kids, lots of kids, aged from about eight to twelve, helter-skelter, seeking to form a single rank at the front of the church.
“The children of Emmanuel will now share, This is my country.”
I looked at these kids, black, white, brown, red and Asian.
American kids……
One child opened, voice quavering…..a second took over, performing her piece, a third……then all at once….the chorus.
“Thiiiiiiis….iiiiiiis…..myyyyyyy.. country, laaaaand of my own….”
Spontaneous, thunderous applause broke out.
My eyes filled with tears.
I’m a total wuss about these things.
The wife smiled. She once told me everybody needs a soft spot, noting how I was harder than flint when angered, precisely focused on a target, calmly filled with an imperative, never deviating or relenting.
But she is right, we all need one……
There is indeed hope….in a humble house of God.
Every child played a part, sang their piece, and all shared the chorus three times, voices loud, proud and strong……
I wiped my eyes with my hat.
Again, rousing applause, one woman standing, followed by a man, and yet another, ’till all of us stood clapping and cheering on these kids.
Calm reigned. The Pastor again…
“I would like to welcome our state assembly woman Barbara Matthews, she has some words for us. Barbara….”
She spoke of sacrifice and pain, despair and joy, sorrow and sadness.
She spoke of the officiation of a funeral of a young vet killed in Iraq, a citizen of her district.
“I never want to do that again…….the faces of his friends and family.”
“But I will if called upon.”
“As did they.”
She then thanked us and took her seat.
The Pastor rose, “Would you now join me in singing, My country, ’tis of thee…”
Somehow…… powerful and poignant at this time.
Again……one people, one voice.
After all, it is ouuuuurrrrrr country…..
Another man took the podium, introducing himself as an educational administrator here in Dog Patch. He began……
“There is another group of people seldom mentioned or remembered. They served their country, returning home to a life of toil and labor, all quite often because they had not completed their education, deferring it to serve their country. Somehow, in all the rush, a job was found, a family started, the education forgotten.”
Continuing…..
“We have a program here in this school district to help these men. I have here two high school diplomas earned by two individuals sitting in this church….I would like to take this moment to present them now…..”
“Would Mr. Garcia, A Vietnam vet, please step forward?”
A man a little older than I slowly stood, tentatively stepping to the aisle, then stepping forward……”
“By the power vested in me by the State of California I now present to you your diploma as a graduate of Dos Palos High School.”
Ringing applause filled the church…….. but you could have heard a pin drop thirty seconds later….
A brief introduction from the administrator, “The next graduate went to war in World War Two, leaving high school in his senior year to serve his country and protect his family. Upon his return he fathered a family and has toiled in the fields for the rest of his working life.”
“Mr. Ramirez? Would you please….?”
Like I say……a pin.
A very old man, very old, struggled to his feet two pews in front of us. Hand on a rail, he was handed a set of walking crutches, the kind with a horizontal grip for your hand, wrap around your wrist with one pole extending to the floor.
Trembling, one pole to the aisle, a foot gently extended……pausing, the other brace extended, trembling with the effort, sliding the other foot, standing in the aisle.
Oh my Gawd! I don’t believe this! Dammit! Where’s my hat?
A journey of perhaps twenty feet……and sixty years.
Shaking, pausing, one small step at a time, an endless trek for a seemingly redundant goal……….but I found myself admiring and loving this man.
“Mr. Ramirez, by the power vested in me……..”
We afforded him the dignity of silence as he returned to his seat, diploma tightly clenched in his left hand.
The Pastor, wiping his eyes, “Would you all now join me in America the beautiful, first and last stanza?”
Somehow she never seemed more beautiful than she did right then.
We put our hearts and lungs into this one.
“Now it is time to ask of those with loved ones serving to please let us know who you are.”
We sat silent as a large box of big candles was opened.
The woman doing needlepoint down the pew from us….
“I have two grandsons serving in Iraq, one on the front lines, the other right behind him.”
“My daughter just graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force base.”
The list was long, far too long.
Finally, the box, empty, having served it purpose, was set aside.
“And finally, we have remembered those serving, those forgotten and those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Yet one group remains…….”
“Would any honorably discharged veterans having served in the armed forces please stand up?”
Oh noooooooo! I didn’t come here for this!
The Other Half looked at me.
I stood up.
Along with about ten other guys.
We were applauded.
I sat down, shaken.
Another pastor took the podium…
“The price of freedom?”
“In a word, costly.”
He then listed numbers, big numbers.
People dead.
And wounded or crippled.
Civilians killed, caught in the cross fire.
“Millions of dead, trillions of dollars……….in a word, costly.”
“We are now involved in a conflict where our very faith and values are under assault, from enemies both without and within. There are those caring little or nothing for our values or our faith, preferring instead to attack us. There are those seeking to simply ignore all going on and get on with their lives. There are those that hate God, using support for our enemies as a method of attacking us. There remain also those claiming our beliefs and values yet not implementing them in their daily lives.”
Oh yeah, the part time Christians. Use it enough to ease their conscience, but never enough to guide their lives……ohhhhh yeah!
I did feel anger then, a quiet, firm resolve. I viewed the message of love and brotherhood here, contrasting that to the rude cacophony of our detractors, their words hollow, humanistic and barren. In truth meriting little but pity.
The voice in my mind….They will not prevail, Kent, not in the long haul. No…
I listened. The message of belief and faith, dignity and calm. I needed to hear that too.
But his point was made……
And well taken.
A group, a choir formed in front of us…..
The Battle hymn of the Republic…..one of my favorites.
The Pastor again, “It is time, please remain seated for the offering, then wait for the color guard to exit, followed by the salute and Taps.
I coughed up a fiver…..
Then stood silently at parade rest as the colors departed, followed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Standing quietly, hearing the words…..
“Preeeeesent harms!”
“Shouldeeeeerr harms!”
Suddenly the silence shattered by seven M1 Garands thundering out their message, not one of anger and defiance, but rather of respect, salutation and gratitude.
Three times…….
Thanks, Dad.
Thanks, Josh….
And God knows how many others…..
The quiet, somber tones of Taps crept into the church, silencing us, heads bowed, thoughts our own…..
Then we realized it was over….
Or in truth has it only begun?????
I still sit here quiet…and subdued.
I’m glad I went.
I will do so again next year.
I will do so tomorrow at eleven at the cemetery…..
This is ouuuurrrr country!
I will do everything in my power to defend her, and my Christian heritage.
I remember the words so well….I do solemnly swear to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic, so help me God.
She means so much more to me now than when I was young…….
You know, it really got to me writing this, but I had to share it with somebody.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Kent

Sen. Barrasso Blasts Dems Destructive Energy Plan In GOP Weekly Address

Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) honored those who gave their lives for this great nation in the GOP Weekly Address.
He also blasted Democrats for their destructive energy plans that will decimate the US economy and cost US families $700 to $1400 each year:
The Democratic plan for America' energy future relies on wind and solar- two sources that currently supply 1% of our energy needs. The Dems plan ignores or punishes oil, gas, coal and nuclear energy- the main US sources of energy. Barack Obama even admitted last year that the Democratic plan of a cap and trade passed this week through the House Energy and Commerce Committee would necessarily cause electricity rates to skyrocket. Obama also admitted the energy companies will pass that cost onto consumers.

And, now that oil is starting to climb back to $75 per barrel what is the Democratic plan? Wind.

Senator Barrasso responded.
The Billings Gazette reported:

In the party's weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, the Republican from the nation's leading coal-producing state said that the GOP supports a more comprehensive energy plan that would increase funding for energy research, develop U.S. oil and gas resources and promote clean coal and nuclear power.

"Democrats have focused solely on what they call green jobs. Those are jobs from alternative energy. I support green jobs, but why discriminate?" Barrasso said. "American energy means American jobs, which is why I support red-white-and-blue jobs."

He said renewable energy such as wind and solar power is important, noting that Wyoming has world-class wind resources. But Barrasso said wind and solar only account for about 1 percent of U.S. electricity, far less than what is needed to meet the nation's energy needs.

Wyoming is the nation's leader in coal production, and coal mining contributes hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each year to the state.

Barrasso also said Democrats were misguided by ruling out drilling for oil in places such as the Outer Continental Shelf and Alaska.

"There's enough oil shale in the Rocky Mountain West alone to power America for the next hundred years," he said. "As a nation, we need to be more energy independent. It is a matter of energy security, as well as national security."
Jules Crittenden has more on the Dem's latest plan to ruin the economy:

Fascinating “Washington Memo” by NYT’s Helene Cooper slams Obama’s growing use of bogus strawmen, when he goes after people who want to “do nothing,” about economic woes, health care, climate change. (I’d like to raise my straw hand on the climate change one. Do nothing, please. That global case of Von Munchausen Syndrome needs a psychiatrist, not a doctor, because the quack cures now being forced down our throats are a waste of time and money in dire economic times, at best, and in fact a destructive, border-line totalitarian exercise in ideological agenda-pushing based on flawed if not coercively skewed science. I hope that takes some of the straw out of Obama’s argument, Helene.)

As most of my regular readers know, one of my favorite whipping posts is the metrosexual male imago the man-haters are successfully saddling our sons with. This Puss-in-Boots culture detests men who would be men. That’s why parents and grandparents who loathe what the media and various institutions are trying to do to our boys need Miniter’s new book more than Pelosi needs Jesus and a straight jacket. Frank has penned a manifesto for manhood, a veritable tour de force for testosterone that decisively rebels against the gush of this sassy society.

Mail a copy to your GOP betters today.

Yeah, I fully expect for visitors to come by and say that what Miniter’s peddling is in fact the false imago of discredited manhood that Bush used to lie us into war . . . blah blah blah. My rejoinder is simple: fuck off. When Perez Hilton and company can accuse Carrie Prejean of being an inauthentic woman because she’s not for teh gay marriage and has had a *gathp* boob job, all I can say is that I wouldn’t boink Janeane Garofalo with Olby’s tiny unit. SIR. Charles Krauthammer lacks perspective because he’s confined to a wheelchair? He’s ten times the man Joe Klein will ever be.

Also, Dick Cheney is so awesome, he fell asleep while being waterboarded.

Happyfeet makes the point that manhood is best understood in the context of fatherhood, and maybe he’s right. But there are men–like some priests I know–who are men without the context of fatherhood, and there are also biological success stories in the regime of the social welfare state.

They actually printed it which surprised me.Democrats have to transition from the childish promises made during the campaign to an adult running the country. Clinton was the same. All we see here is Cheney the parent lecturing Obama the child

Yep, and all the child can do is come back with smart-ass comments and more campaign type speeches. I’m half expecting him to say “I hate you! I can’t wait to be on my own”. But he is on his own, and I agree with John florida, B-HO is hearing footsteps everywhere he goes. It’ll work on him until he does something so childish even most of the left will see the light.

Fjordman: Why Muslims Like Hitler, but Not Mozart

by Baron Bodissey

Fjordman’s latest essay, “Why Muslims Like Hitler, but Not Mozart”, has been published at the Brussels Journal. Some excerpts are below:

I have had some interesting discussions with my good friend Ohmyrus, who is an ethnic Chinese man but appreciates some aspects of Western civilization that many Westerners themselves appear to have forgotten, or rejected. He is not unique in this regard. One of the best books about European culture published in recent years is Defending the West, written by the former Muslim Ibn Warraq who was born in the Indian subcontinent, not in the Western world. Essentially, according to modern Multiculturalism, every culture has the right to exist — except the Western one. The Iranian-born ex-Muslim Ali Sina denounces Multiculturalism for precisely this reason in his book Understanding Muhammad, which I have reviewed online:

“If any culture needs to be preserved, it is the Western, Helleno-Christian culture. It is this culture that is facing extinction. It is to this culture alone that we owe the Enlightenment, Renaissance, and democracy. These are the foundations of our modern world. It would be a terrible mistake not to preserve this culture. If we do nothing, we face a future where democracy and tolerance will fade and Islam’s more primitive instincts will subjugate humanity. All cultures are not made equal … We owe our freedom and modern civilization to Western culture. It is this culture that is now under attack and needs protection.”
- - - - - - - - -
As a native European, it is strange to notice how many (non-Muslim) Asians apparently appreciate my civilization more these days than so-called intellectuals in my own country do. It is challenging to explain how the West could make so many advances in the past and yet be as stupid as it currently is. The question of what went wrong with the West is far more interesting than what went wrong with the Islamic world. The best answer I can come up with is that maybe our current flaws are related to our past virtues, at least indirectly. For instance, being stubborn can be a strength or a weakness, depending upon the situation. The West is a non-traditionalist civilization. We have unquestionably made advances that no other civilization has done before us, despite what some critics claim, but perhaps the price we pay for this is that we also make mistakes that nobody has done before us. Organized science is a Western invention. Organized national suicide, too, is a Western invention. The Western university system once represented a great comparative advantage for Europe vis-à-vis other civilizations. Today that same system is undermining the very civilization that gave birth to it.

Read the rest at the Brussels Journal.

Islamic Jihad in the Bronx

In response to a gruesome series of Islamic-Palestinian synagogue bombings in Europe, police officers guarded Europe’s synagogues and Jewish Centers. Now, synagogues all over New York City, tend to have barricades or some kind of police presence outside. We are now all Israelis: Not just the Jews, but the world’s civilians.

And thus, four African-American converts to Islam, all of whom converted to Islam in prison, have been arrested by the FBI just as they attempted to bomb two Riverdale synagogues, (the Riverdale Jewish Center and the Riverdale Temple), in the Bronx and a New York National Guard air base in Newburgh, New York where they lived and attended a mosque.

Why do I begin by clearly stating the race and religion of the terrorists? Because the liberal mainstream media refuses to do so, or buries such facts on its back pages.

The WSJ describes how a doctoral student, working on his own time, put together a dossier on North Korea better than anything in open source, and possibly, better than many classified studies. Curtis Melvin did it by creating a “go to place” for intelligence fusion on North Korea and carefully piecing the puzzle together.

Mr. Melvin is at the center of a dozen or so citizen snoops who have spent the past two years filling in the blanks on the map of one of the world’s most secretive countries. Seeking clues in photos, news reports and eyewitness accounts, they affix labels to North Korean structures and landscapes captured by Google Earth, an online service that stitches satellite pictures into a virtual globe. The result is an annotated North Korea of rocket-launch sites, prison camps and elite palaces on white-sand beaches. … An economist who studies developing countries and has traveled from Turkmenistan to Zimbabwe, Mr. Melvin started his project in early 2007 to designate places he visited on two group tours to North Korea earlier this decade. He shared it on several North Korea-related Web sites. …

People soon started sending him locations they knew, from tourist sites to airfields tucked into valleys near South Korea. Mr. Melvin says that sadness for North Koreans’ plight, and the fascination of discovery, motivated him to continue.

The system is changing even as I write this. Starting in the 80’s, I realized that the NYT of my youth was not to be accepted as gospel. That feeling has progressed to the point where I don’t trust them any more than Kim Jong Il’s press flacks. If something I might buy would benefit them, I refuse to purchase it. Using facts, I denigrate them at every opportunity to anyone who doesn’t understand what they’ve done to truth in America. I’m proud to think I’ve played a small part in bringing those lying, America-hating criminals down, and I’ll be a happy man when I see them go bankrupt.

I’m doing the same thing with Obama and I’m seeing that people are beginning to realize what an existential threat he and his accomplices are. It’s amazing what happens when you start telling people that the government in power is ruining the currency–and back it up with facts. That CBO chart of the pending red ink just scares the Hell out of them. That picture truly is worth more than a thousand words.

I’m thinking that by the time this clown leaves office he’ll make Jimmy Carter’s popularity records look high by comparison. The real question is what we’ll have left to work with after he’s done. We’ve got a lot of problems ahead of us as a nation and nothing Obama has done will do anything but make them worse and harder to fix.

Why Jeff Can’t Give Up [Dan Collins]

HR 1913, The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and its companion bill S. 909, the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act threaten us with targeted censorship, attacks on religious freedom, and outrageous protections for pedophilia and other deviant behavior. Even prominent gay activists like Andrew Sullivan say that this legislation is unnecessary and dishonest. But if these arguments aren’t enough to cause you to grab a pitchfork and march on Washington (or at least call your Senators), then perhaps you need a bigger perspective about what’s really at stake.

As a reminder, the bill has been passed in the House, and is now in process in the Senate. The legislation contains provisions that will increase the penalties for acts committed against certain protected groups, punishing motives as well as acts, and giving special legal stature to homosexuals and those with sexually-related “disabilities”. The language of the bill arguably undermines Fourteenth Amendment “equal protection of the law,” making some groups more equal than others. Pedophiles are elevated to a protected class, but a mother who slaps a child rapist can go to jail for a hate crime. Rep. Alcee Hastings was even so brazen as to align the purpose of the bill with acts of sexual deviancy, saying that it is time to protect “‘philias and fetishes.’”

At the same time, amendments that would have protected faith-based groups from antagonistic prosecution were voted down. This has caused many advocates of religious expression to fear this legislation, drawing on examples of hate crimes laws in Britain and Canada where pastors and other persons of faith have been arrested for religious speech in public places.

These are all good reasons to oppose this bill.

But S. 909 must be stopped for reasons that go far beyond the issues attached to this particular legislation. This proposed law will set a precedent that can be broadened to encompass potentially any idea, belief, or viewpoint. Today hate, tomorrow fill in the blank.

And a refresher course on the mood after 9-11.

How A “Dead” Conservative Movement is Beating the Democrats

There are three legs of the conservative stool: foreign policy, social issues, and economic issues.

Foreign policy is over. Bush’s anti-terrorism will be practiced by future administrations.

Social issues are over. When given a chance to vote, people vote against gay marriage and all. More and more people are not for abortion. Much of this is due to the increase of hispanics which do not agree at all with the New England attitude for social issues.

Economic issues is where the debate is. However, this is a temporary one. Social Security and Medicare *will* crash. California state is already crashing. Government will not be seen as the answer. Young people know that starting your own business online is a good idea. There is intense interest among the young about financial education. Why? Because they never received it in school.

For more evidence, note how Democrats keep looking backwards, never forward. Obama wants to be FDR, not Obama. Stale Industrial Age rhetoric is overflowing. This rhetoric is on its last legs. We are in the Silicon Age, not the Industrial Age.

The Blue states are in decline. The red states, especially the south, are booming.

The ideology holed up in New England dies. Federalist Party, died. Whigs, died. Free Soil, Free Men, died. McKinley coalition, died. Rockefeller Republicans, died. Liberals being up there is not a good sign for them.

One political party believes in abortion and mass contraception. The other does not believe in abortion and is more favorable to having children. The demographics will not go the liberals’ way. Even hispanics, who might only disagree with the economic leg of the conservative stool, live and act more like conservatives. Hispanics overwhelmingly supported Bush when he ran for Texas governor. They also vote against gay marriage.

The future is, indeed, quite bright.

Ernie Pyle and the death of Captain Waskow

"Then a soldier came and stood beside the officer, and bent over, and he too spoke to his dead captain, not in a whisper but awfully tenderly, and he said:

"I sure am sorry, sir."

Then the first man squatted down, and he reached down and took the dead hand, and he sat there for a full five minutes, holding the dead hand in his own and looking intently into the dead face, and he never uttered a sound all the time he sat there.

And finally he put the hand down, and then reached up and gently straightened the points of the captain’s shirt collar, and then he sort of rearranged the tattered edges of his uniform around the wound. And then he got up and walked away down the road in the moonlight, all alone. "

NEW YORK (AP) - The figure in the photograph is clad in Army fatigues, boots and helmet, lying on his back in peaceful repose, folded hands holding a military cap. Except for a thin trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth, he could be asleep.

But he is not asleep; he is dead. And this is not just another fallen GI; it is Ernie Pyle, the most celebrated war correspondent of World War II.

As far as can be determined, the photograph has never been published. Sixty-three years after Pyle was killed by the Japanese, it has surfaced—surprising historians, reminding a forgetful world of a humble correspondent who artfully and ardently told the story of a war from the foxholes.

North Korea Claims To Have Conducted A Nuclear Test. And More? Report N. Korea Also Launched A Short Range Missile

—DrewM.

Awesome.

The country's official Korean Central News Agency reported that the test was carried out Monday.

Lee Dong-kwan, a spokesman for the South Korean president, says that a nuclear test may have been carried out in the North.

Seismologists from the U.S., South Korea and Japan reported earthquakes in an northeastern area, where North Korea conducted a nuclear test in 2006.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was registered in northeastern North Korea at 9:54 a.m. (0054 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

And then this...

Just hours later, North Korea appears to have test-fired a short-range missile, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.

Pyongyang has so far not commented on Yonhap's report.

Slow Joe Biden may have underestimated the number of people lining up to test Obama.

More: Just for fun, I checked to see if N. Korea was part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. They were, until they go caught in 2003 and then they bailed out. It's almost like treaties don't, you know, stop countries from doing whatever they want.

BTW, what did the N. Koreans say back in the day?

The official Korean Central News Agency said that, although Pyongyang was pulling out of the NPT, it had no intention of producing nuclear weapons.

"Our nuclear activities at this stage will be confined only to peaceful purposes such as the production of electricity," Friday's statement said.

Just like the Iranians, sans the Jew baiting of course.

Tomorrow's Conventional Wisdom Today...This failure of diplomacy clearly shows the need for more diplomacy. The Six Party Talks have done nothing to stop N. Korea's nuclear program. Obviously this demonstrates the importance of redoubling efforts to conduct more Six Party Talks.

Just remember...missile defense remains unproven. However, when it comes to diplomacy, especially 'smart' and 'tough' diplomacy, everyday is a new day.

Ah, the building CW (at least according to CNNI reporters and analysts)... North Korea only reacts to carrots, not sticks, so start handing out the carrots! Again, this unfortunately runs afoul of all experience.

Hey, guess who published a piece called "Get Ready for Another North Korean Nuke Test" just 5 days ago? John "The Mustache" Bolton, that's who.

If the next nuclear explosion doesn't derail the six-party talks, Kim will rightly conclude that he faces no real danger of ever having to dismantle his weapons program. North Korea is a mysterious place, but there is no mystery about its foreign-policy tactics: They work. The real mystery is why our administrations -- Republican and Democratic -- haven't learned that their quasi-religious faith in the six-party talks is misplaced.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently rejected "linkage" in Russia policy as "old thinking." Disagreement in one area, she argued, shouldn't prevent working on "something else that is of overwhelming importance." Whatever the merits of linkage vis-à-vis Russia, de-linking a second North Korean nuclear test from the six-party talks simply hands Pyongyang permission to proceed.

Even worse, Iran and other aspiring nuclear proliferators will draw precisely the same conclusion: Negotiations like the six-party talks are a charade and reflect a continuing collapse of American resolve. U.S. acquiescence in a second North Korean nuclear test will likely mean that Tehran will adopt Pyongyang's successful strategy.

So, we've got that to look forward to.

VOA reports that North Korea has claimed a new nuclear weapons test.

North Korea says it has successfully conducted an underground nuclear test, defying international warnings and raising concerns over its nuclear weapons program. Pyongyang said Monday’s test was more powerful than the country’s first test two-and-a-half years ago. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency also reports that North Korea test-fired a short-range missile just hours after the nuclear test.

"...the last 40 years our government is assuming more childish and irrational ideas and policies. There are some moments of rationality like Reagan and Bush 2 but those Presidents are so overwhelmed with a few initiatives that they are unable to roll back the liberal indoctrination in our programs and education systems. Reagan had the economy, stagflation, which he solved, but it took time and the steps to kill the USSR, Star Wars and fight back on the small wars. Central America and East Europe.

Now the loony left got their guy and he is a Marxist and running roughshod over the structure of our economy and government. He is clueless and a poor planner for long-term strategy for a country that he is torn between urges to tear down or build up.

So he is incapable of protecting or pushing our foreign power and dominance. Israel knows that and Australia and Japan is figuring it out...If I were the leader of Israel I would be upgrading my nuclear capability. Same with Japan and Australia. Now we know why everybody is buying guns and ammo. Same instinct."

No fear any more

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appears to have rejected Washington’s offer of direct talks as well as the “freeze-for-freeze” proposals put forward by the International Community aimed at getting Iran to stop developing nuclear weapons. “The nuclear issue is a finished issue for us,” Ahmadinejad was quoted by the Washington Post as saying, adding he had his own ideas about how to proceed. He challenged Obama to a debate in the United Nations. The Obama administration had offered to hold direct talks with Teheran and Western diplomats offered

a so-called “freeze-for-freeze” proposal first put forward last year under which Iran would freeze expansion of its nuclear program in return for the U.N. Security Council halting further sanctions against Tehran. … Western diplomats say the proposal remains on the table. Ahmadinejad last month said Iran had prepared its own package of proposals to end the stalemate. … Asked about North Korea’s nuclear test on Monday, Ahmadinejad said: “In principle we oppose the production, expansion and the use of weapons of mass destruction.” He said Iran had no missile or nuclear cooperation with North Korea.

In other developments, the Israeli Defense Minister was heading to Washington to discuss “Iran’s nuclear ambitions”.

The defence minister was also planning to meet Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Obama’s National Security Adviser James Jones and special Middle East envoy George Mitchell, the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. Barak’s visit comes on the heels of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s White House meeting with President Barack Obama last week, which revealed discord between the two close allies on the stagnant Middle East peace process.

However, Obama eased Israeli concerns over his efforts to persuade Iran to halt its nuclear programme in direct negotiations, with the president saying the success of the dialogue would be assessed by the year’s end.

“This dialogue ought to be short and should have milestones to check whether it is serious or not,” Barak told army radio. “I believe the chances that talks will halt Iran’s nuclear programme are very low.”

The former chief of staff reiterated that the Jewish state would not rule out military action against nuclear sites in the Islamic republic.

Saul Alinsky taught his disciples that authority figures could survive anything except public ridicule. Once people began to laugh at you, things were heading downhill. The recent actions and rhetoric from North Korea and Iran openly mock the Obama administration. Ahmadinejad was dismissive of Obama’s offer of direct negotiations and has challenged the US President to appear in a freakshow debate of his own device before the UN. If the news reports of Ehud Barak’s remarks are accurate, then even the Israeli Defense Minister, who would ordinarily be diplomatically correct and deferential towards an American President is practically characterizing his trip to Washington as a waste of time. Is President Obama, the sweep of whose hands it was once believed could silence the world, in danger of becoming an object of derision? He is in any event, in the middle of the challenge which Joe Biden predicted he would face.

"I think Iran just tested it’s weapon in their Nork facility. For the second time…It was hard for them to threaten with a fizzle. But now they got proof. They are now a punk with a gun."

"Two options — either the nuke tested in North Korea was a domestic product, or it came from Iran. If it came from Iran, time’s up. If it came from North Korea, anyone who wants a nuke and has large amounts of ready cash now has a willing supplier. Eg, Iran.

Either way, time’s up. Diplomacy is over. We may be in a period similar to 1939’s “Phoney War” for a little while, but the die has been cast."

"...I think Obama is already dangerously overstretched - domestically, internationally, personally. Appearances are he’s way out of his league, and no amount of Axelrod-ian imaginings can change that impression. Fiat’s sniffing at their Chrysler deal a lot more closely, select states’ pensions are gearing up to sue the Feds, the EU is suing Intel for, get this, “anti-trust violations,” and Iran and the Norks are getting all trigger happy all of a sudden.

One well-aimed tomato will topple what’s left of the Obama cult..."For the record, the test was correctly predicted by One Free Korea and John Bolton.

What John Bolton knew

The underground nuclear test announced by North Korea appears to come as something of a surprise to the Obama administration. Yet the Obama administration has acted with nothing but complacency about the nuclear programs of North Korea and Iran. In a May 20 Wall Street Journal column, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton predicted:

The curtain is about to rise again on the long-running nuclear tragicomedy, "North Korea Outwits the United States." Despite Kim Jong Il's explicit threats of another nuclear test, U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Bosworth said last week that the Obama administration is "relatively relaxed" and that "there is not a sense of crisis." They're certainly smiling in Pyongyang.

Ambassador Bolton found that Bosworth and his colleagues were providing the North Koreans with nothing but encouragement:

Despite Pyongyang's aggression, Mr. Bosworth has reiterated that the U.S. is "committed to dialogue" and is "obviously interested in returning to a negotiating table as soon as we can." This is precisely what the North wants: America in a conciliatory mode, eager to bargain, just as Mr. Bush was after the 2006 test.

I think it's safe to say they're smiling in Tehran (or should I say "the Islamic Republic of Iran"?) too.

Via Legal Insurrection and NRO's Corner.

"As long as the administration and the left in general have their heads in the sand about the reality of evil in the world, not just in the "USA" N. Korea , Iran and every other crackpot country will continue to "surprise" our fearless leader and his Brainless Trust"

"It's worth noting that the test was also predicted by a blogger, one day before John Bolton's article was published. Interested parties may wish to read the blog at http://www.freekorea.us "

North Koreans Taunt Obama: Fire Two Missiles After Testing Nuke Bomb

The nuclear go-to boys for Islamic jihad completed their sales presentation of their latest nuclear bomb (here) with a demonstration of their state of art delivery system. The North Koreans launched two missiles a day after testing another nuclear bomb.

Obama is changing his wet pants and will be reading off his teleprompter shortly as his handlers devise a tersely worded billet doux.

FOX NEWS: SEOUL, South Korea —  North Korea launched tests Tuesday of two more short-range missiles a day after conducting a nuclear test, news reports said, pushing the regime's confrontation with world powers further despite the threat of U.N. Security Council action.

Two missiles — one ground-to-air, the other ground-to-ship — with a range of about 80 miles (130 kilometers) were test-fired Tuesday from an east coast launch pad, the Yonhap news agency and YTN television reported, citing unnamed South Korean officials.

South Korea's spy chief, Won Sei-hoon, had informed lawmakers earlier Tuesday that North Korea appeared to be preparing to test-fire more missiles, according to Park Young-sun, a legislator who attended the closed-door session.

Pyongyang also test-fired three short-range missiles Monday in the hours after conducting an underground nuclear test in the northeast, Yonhap said. (hat tip Amaros)

NORTH KOREA TESTS SECOND NUCLEAR BOMB

When America was strong, proud and unafraid to show our moral clarity and superior military strength, the world was a more peaceful place.

The North Koreans dropped a second nuclear bomb today. Today, of all days, America's Memorial day - how fitting. Do you think that symbolism is irrelevant or accidental? I don't, and neither do they.

How will Obama react to the North Koreans dropping yet another nuclear bomb? By promising to disarm the US and her allies of nuclear weapons? Such asshattery is beneath contempt.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said North Korea's latest nuclear test needs a Security Council response. The world body that allowed such things to happen plans to write another billet doux.

Perhaps another circle jerk around sanctions. That worked brilliantly in the past. Over at FOX:

The five permanent veto-wielding members of the council — the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France — met behind closed doors ahead of the meeting of the full 15-member council.

Japan, which called for the emergency meeting, said North Korea's "irresponsible" nuclear test and a missile launch in April had challenged the authority of the U.N.'s most powerful body "and the response must be firm."

Japan must establish a new alliance of democratic nations with Israel, India, Taiwan, Marshall Islands - all Democratic nations - and create a new umbrella of protection. I think the Japanese have to go nuclear.

"It's a very clear challenge," said Japan's U.N. Ambassador Yukio Takasu, a non-permanent council member. "So therefore we need a really, really clear and firm message from this — preferably a resolution."

Takasu refused to say whether Japan would seek new sanctions against North Korea, saying he wanted to consult with other council members. "The important thinking is a unified message from the council," he said.

North Korea claimed it carried out a powerful underground nuclear test Monday that was much larger than one it conducted in 2006. Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed an atomic explosion occurred early Monday in northeastern North Korea and estimated that its strength was similar to bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.

Governor Palin After North Korean Nuke Test: "Why Consider US Missile Program Cuts Now?"

Conservatives For Palin posted this tweet from Governor Sarah Palin after the North Korean Regime made its second test of a nuclear explosive on Monday:

More N Korea nuke tests: why consider US missile program cuts now? AK military program helps secure US. Now is NOT time to cut our defense.
In April Barack Obama announced he would cut missile defense projects this year. This was after democrats voted for more funding for corrupt community organizations like ACORN a few weeks earlier.

Boy, we really dodged a bullet with that last election.

Meanwhile, the Thugocracy rolls on:

Obama Closed and Stole Republican Car Dealerships?

Remember this poor beleaguered (robbed) businessman robbed of his business by the Obama criminal gang?

A tipster over at Director Blues made a startling assertion. A cursory review by that person showed that many of the Chrysler dealers on the closing list were heavy Republican donors.

To quickly review the situation, I took all dealer owners whose names appeared more than once in the list. And, of those who contributed to political campaigns, every single one had donated almost exclusively to GOP candidates. While this isn't an exhaustive review, it does have some ominous implications if it can be verified.

However, I also found additional research online at Scribd (author unknown), which also appears to point to a highly partisan decision-making process.

Consider the partial list of Chrysler dealership owners, listed below. You'll notice that all were opponents of Barack Obama, most through sponsorship of GOP candidates and organizations, but a handful through Barack's Democrat rivals (Hillary Clinton and John Edwards in 2008, for example).

• Vernon G. Buchanan: $147,450 to GOP candidates and organizations
• Wallace D. Alley and Family: $4,500 to GOP.
• Robert Archer: $4,600 to GOP and conservative causes.
• Homer S. Higginbotham and Family: $2950 to GOP.
• James Auffenberg and Family: $28,000 to GOP; $6,000 to one Democrat candidate.
• Michael Maroone and Family: $60,000 to GOP; $8,500 to two Democrat candidates.
• Jerome Fader: $6,500 to Democrats; $2,500 to Independent Joe Lieberman.
• Stephen Fay and Family: $13,500 to GOP.
• William Numrich: $20,000 to GOP.
• Robert Carver: $10,000 to Democrats including $1,950 to Hillary Clinton, nothing to Barack Obama.

Read it all.

Your humble correspondent doesn’t really care much about gay marriage because I believe it is no danger to the republic and the deity can sort all this stuff out after we’re dead. I take a libertarian position on issues such as gay marriage because I want all Americans to be able to pursue happiness equally.

I would submit to our humble correspondent that the real issue isn't gay marriage but rather creating a medium for "gay adoption" and recruitment from birth.

So if a disadvantaged child survives the abortuaries long enough to be born, they then become prey of ravaging groups of homosexuals who will adopt them as children and use them worse than toilet paper.

FCC’s Warrantless Household Searches Alarm Experts

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/05/fcc-raid/
You may not know it, but if you have a wireless router, a cordless phone, remote car-door opener, baby monitor or cellphone in your house, the FCC claims the right to enter your home without a warrant at any time of the day or night in order to inspect it.

That’s the upshot of the rules the agency has followed for years to monitor licensed television and radio stations, and to crack down on pirate radio broadcasters. And the commission maintains the same policy applies to any licensed or unlicensed radio-frequency device.

“Anything using RF energy — we have the right to inspect it to make sure it is not causing interference,” says FCC spokesman David Fiske. That includes devices like Wi-Fi routers that use unlicensed spectrum, Fiske says.

The FCC claims it derives its warrantless search power from the Communications Act of 1934, though the constitutionality of the claim has gone untested in the courts. That’s largely because the FCC had little to do with average citizens for most of the last 75 years...

Democrat Senator Sics FBI on Tea-Party participant as "potential terrorist."

Apparently, as this left leaning Congress assaults our rights on a daily basis, they are now resorting to reporting dissenters to their policies to the FBI, under the guise of terrorist threats. Since when did expressing a p0litical opinion, or disagreeing with the passage of Socialist bills in the legislature become terrorist in nature?

Nevada Governor to Obama: "I'm not interested in a handshake. I'm interested in an apology."

The White House announced that they would meet Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons at the airport when Barack Obama arrives in Las Vegas today for a fundraiser with Senator Harry Reid.
The governor had requested a meeting with the president when he came to town.

Governor Jim Gibbons responded to the news yesterday:
"I'm not interested in a handshake. I'm interested in an apology."

HotAirPundit has the video, via Free Republic.

Meeting News reported that Gibbons will not meet with Obama today:

Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons has declined an invitation to meet briefly with President Barack Obama while he's in Las Vegas today, his office announced yesterday, and instead has demanded that the president publicly apologize for remarks he made earlier this year discouraging travel to Las Vegas.

"While I appreciate the offer, I am not interested in a handshake and a hello from President Obama," Gibbons said in a statement. "I am interested in an apology and plan to undo the damage the president did."

Fetch the comfy chair! U.N. Security Council passes new toothless resolution; Update: N. Korea fires two more short-range missiles

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 26, 2009 12:12 AM

In response to North Korea’s willful violation of a toothless U.N. Security Council resolution, the panel quickly passed…yet another toothless U.N. Security Council resolution.

It is Monty Python’s world, and we are all just living in it. Fetch the comfy chair!

We all know the answer, but William A. Jacobson has an excellent post asking the inconvenient question:

Will the Left apologize to John Bolton?

***

Update: In the wee hours of the morning comes another set of test launches. Wow. Those new resolutions really showed Kim Jong Il! Via Marketwatch:

North Korea fired two short-range missiles along its east coast Tuesday, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency. The reported launch came a day after similar launches and the apparently successful test of a nuclear weapon. Yonhap had reported earlier in the day that North Korea had declared parts of its coast off-limit to ships, signaling that a new launch was imminent.

Plus, a roundup from The Anchoress, and a debate on Judge Sotomayor’s savings between Greg Mankiw and Tom Smith.

And, Jan Crawford Greenburg on how it happened.

Also, Kerry Howley on the cruel tyranny of wise Latinas.

Heh: “I can’t even work up any outrage at this kind of tokenism. It’s expected, like her being a Princeton/Yale Law alumna. Just once in my life I’d like to see a president nominate to the court a graduate of, say, University of Tennessee Law School. That would be diversity. Instead, she’s just another Ivy Leaguer. Yawn.”

On the other hand, Kopel debunks a “highly dubious” charge against Sotomayor. “There is no reason to believe this is true. The purported source is ‘American News Inc.’ The link to this alleged news source is dead.

MORE LOCAL ACTION BY TEA PARTY FOLKS: “Sen. Mike Crapo says he understands the frustrations of those that have been protesting federal spending and rising national debt. The Idaho Republican met Monday in Idaho Falls with organizers of the local anti-tax Tea Party protest, held last month in cities across the state and nation. The Boise rally drew an estimated 2,500 people.”

UPDATE: Political targeting?

Shock! Big Dem Donor Group Allowed to Keep Their 6 Chrysler Dealerships Open ...Update: Their Local Competitors Eliminated!!

Are we looking at the biggest political scandal since Watergate?

Big Dem Donor Group allowed to keep all 6 Chrysler dealerships open.... Local competitors eliminated by Obama's task force!!

Earlier it was reported that the Obama Administration may have targeted GOP donors in deciding which Chrysler dealerships would have to close their doors.

Now there's this...
RLJ-McLarty-Landers is owned by three men.
One was the former Chief of Staff for President Clinton.
One is the founder of Black Entertainment Television and a huge Obama supporter.
All 6 of their Chrysler dealerships will remain open.
And, get this... Their local competitors have been eliminated!

Joey Smith reported tonight that a Democratic donor group in the Midwest and South will not have to close any of their Chrysler dealerships:

The company is called RLJ-McLarty-Landers, and it operates six Chrysler dealerships throughout the South. All six dealerships are safe from closing. The dealer locations are:

Bentonville, AR (northwest Arkansas)
Lee's Summit, MO (south of Kansas City, MO)
Branson, MO
Olathe, KS (near Kansas City)
Bossier City, LA (near Shreveport)
Huntsville, AL

The interesting part is who the three main owners of the company are. The owners are Steve Landers (long-time car dealer, 4th-generation dealer), Thomas "Mack" McLarty (former Chief of Staff for President Clinton), and Robert Johnson (founder of Black Entertainment Television and co-owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats). Landers has given money to Republicans in the past, but McLarty campaigned for Obama in 2008, and Johnson has given countless amounts of money to Democrats over the years.
More... The decision to close the dealerships was made by Obama officials and not Chrysler.

Doug Ross first reported on this scandal and has several updates.

CA Supreme Ct Upholds Gay Marriage Ban

May 26th, 2009

From an outraged Associated Press:

Protesters rally in front of the California Supreme Court during the Proposition 8 case on March 5, 2009 in San Francisco.

California Supreme Court upholds gay marriage ban

By Lisa Leff, Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO – The California Supreme Court has upheld a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, but it also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay couples who tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed.

The decision Tuesday rejected an argument by gay rights activists that the ban revised the California constitution’s equal protection clause to such a dramatic degree that it first needed the Legislature’s approval.

The announcement of the decision caused outcry among a sea of demonstrators who had gathered in front of the San Francisco courthouse awaiting the ruling…

This is a bit of a (welcome) surprise.

Though the court is claiming to have decided the issue on very narrow grounds – legal terms.

But stay tuned for the riots and death threats.

175 Protesters Arrested After Prop 8 Decision

Gay activists block a San Francisco intersection. (Indymedia)

After the court ruled in favor of the people of California upholding Proposition 8, 175 protesters were arrested in San Francisco.
Mercury News and Free Republic reported:

San Francisco police arrested about 175 protesters who were part of a group that blocked a major intersection for hours today in response to the state Supreme Court's ruling upholding Proposition 8, the voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage.

Hundreds of people filled the intersection of Grove Street and Van Ness Avenue late this morning after word spread of the ruling. The court also ruled that roughly 18,000 existing same-sex marriages in California remain valid.

Around 12:45 p.m., officers were seen placing plastic handcuffs on protesters and leading them to police vans waiting nearby. With each new arrest, the crowd cheered.

Police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka said the protesters were arrested for being outside a crosswalk and failing to obey an officer. Tomioka said she was not aware of any injuries related to the protest.

The time for O’s mettle test is here: North Korea prepares for war

Please pick up the red courtesy phone (Photoshop credit: Redhotphones.com)

Joe Biden said our unseasoned Dear Leader would soon be tested. The time is here and now. North Korea tonight has abandoned a 1953 ceasefire and is preparing the peninsula for war in the wake of South Korea’s decision to side with an anti-proliferation coalition led by the U.S.

Wonder if that red phone woke him and Hillary up yet. Brrrrrr–ing. Brrrr–ing:

North Korea’s military says it considers South Korea’s participation in a U.S.-led program to intercept ships suspected of spreading weapons of mass destruction tantamount to a declaration of war against the North.

The communist North’s military said in a statement Wednesday that it will respond with “immediate, strong military measures” if the South actually stops and searches any North Korean ships under the Proliferation Security Initiative.

The statement, carried by the North’s Korean Central News Agency, said North Korea no longer considers itself bound by the armistice that ended the Korean War, as a protest over the South’s participation.

Flashback October 2008:

“Mark my words,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international

North Korea helped build a secret nuclear power plant in Syria, which was destroyed by the Israeli Air Force in 2007 while the CIA was still asleep. North Korea sells nuclear and missile technology to Iran and Pakistan. Kim can easily sell his nuclear Bomb in the Middle East; today his bomb also threatens Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China.
