In a new ad, the Obama campaign says Mitt Romney is intentionally changing Obama’s words; they show a side-by-side comparison of Obama’s words and Romney’s quotation of them, saying, "Mitt Romney is launching a false attack." Only one problem, guys. What Romney quoted from Obama was this: "If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." The Obama ad continues, “The only problem? The ridiculous outcry over "You didn't build that" seems very familiar to me. It calls to mind the hysteria that greeted Margaret Thatcher's comment, "There is no such thing as society". The parallel is almost exact. Obama said the words, but plainly didn't mean what his critics say he meant. Thatcher said the words too, but obviously wasn't saying what her critics said she was. Both speakers were careless, allowing their opponents to draw an unflattering caricature. In each case, though, there was a particle of justice in this willful misrepresentation--because a caricature doesn't work unless you recognize its subject....

Checking for context before slamming someone for a single line in a speech is always a noble endeavor. But there’s a point when the “benefit of the doubt” becomes ridiculous. A prime example is the liberal argument that President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” comment wasn’t directed at businesses: When he made the comment in Roanoke, Va. What do you do when everybody's claiming your president said something, and you just know he didn't really say it, but all the video and all the audio and all the transcripts show that he did say it? This is the dilemma faced by supporters of President Obama in the long wake of last week's "You didn't build that" speech. The president's supporters have a multipronged counterargument: Either he didn't make those comments or they were taken out of context or even if they are in context they don't matter because we should be reading between the lines.

Ever since President Obama made his anti-business comments there has been an outcry by liberals that his words were taken out of context. In the beginning, Government provided the infrastructure that permitted the success of American companies. After seven days, government rested. Until President Obama clearly reinforced the government-Creationist perspective, Americans truly did not understand the greatness of our government and all that it has done for us. If not for Government (like God, Government should be capitalized), Henry Ford would have never invented the car. This week, Obama opined that American ingenuity has nothing to do with individual success. Johnny did not build his business, and Suzy didn't build hers. To quote the President: "somebody else made that happen." But Johnny had the idea, and then he made it happen with "hard" work (which O should appreciate because he often tells us how really "hard" his job is).  Johnny's family and/or friends may have joined him in the endeavor, and maybe they all made it happen, but it had nothing to do with Government. “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Easily one of the most insulting phrases uttered by President Obama or any president, it denigrates individual American spirit, ambition, drive, skill and industriousness.
