Archive sheds new light on Tutankhamun discovery, 100 years on

A new exhibition at the University of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries - Tutankhamun: Excavating the Archives - marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery by the British Egyptologist Howard Carter and his team.

Dramatically lit images captured by the photographer Harry Burton, along with letters, plans, drawings and diaries from Carter's archive shed new light on the story of the 10-year excavation of the tomb, which was the first known intact royal burial from ancient Egypt.

They also challenge the perception of Carter as a solitary hero, highlighting the contribution of the many skilled Egyptian workers who are often overlooked.

Four Egyptian foremen - Ahmed Gerigar, Gad Hassan, Hussein Abu Awad and Hussein Ahmed Said - were named and thanked by Carter in his publications. However, it is not possible to identify them among the workers pictured.

I always remembered a program that explained how we pronounce his name incorrectly.

It’s not “Tuten-Kamen”.

Its “Tux-Ankh-Amun”.

Typical westerners getting it wrong just to make it easier for ourselves.

Typical westerners, preserving and studying the past of locals who don’t care if anyone can pronounce it or not.

Here is even an older song...I first heard it on an old EDISON 3/16 thick record.

OLD KING TUT

Three thousand years ago, In history we know,
King Tutenkhamen ruled a mighty land–
He ruled for many years, ‘Mid laughter, song and tears,
He made a record that will always stand–
They opened up his tomb the other day and jumped with glee,
They learned a lot of ancient history–

CHORUS:
In old King Tut-Tut-Tut-enkhamen’s day,
Beneath the tropic skies King Tut-Tut-Tut was very wise,
Now old King Tut-Tut-Tut was always gay,
Cleopatra she sat upon his knee, Pat! that’s where she sat.
Now old King Tut was just a nut as you can see,
Still proud was Tut about his Beechnut ancestry.
A thousand girls would dance each day,
With lots of hip-hip-hip-hooray,
In old King Tut-Tut-Tut-Tut-Tut-Tut, King Tutty’s Day.

His tomb instead of tears, Was full of Souveniers,
He must have travelled greatly in his time–
The gold and silver ware, That they found hidden there,
Was from hotels of ev’ry land and clime.
While going thru’ his royal robes they found up in his sleeve,
The first love letter Adam wrote to Eve.

CHORUS:
In old King Tut-Tut-Tut-enkhamen’s day,
The dancers then in style
Would even make the old Sphinx smile,
In old King Tut-Tut-Tutenkhamen’s day,
On the desert sand old King Tutty’s band
Played while maiden’s [sic] swayed.
They’d dance for old King Tut ‘neath moonlit skies so warm,
They wore such happy smiles and were in perfect form.
They’d dance for him both fat and thin,
He didn’t care what shape they’re in,
In old King Tut-Tut-Tut-Tut-Tut-Tut, King Tutty’s Day.

As usual, thanks for posting this (and all your other finds).

About ten years ago, I took a free trial subscription to Audible and listened to "The History of Ancient Egypt." It is one of "The Great Courses" on Audible and is an outstanding series.

It is still available on a free trial basis. It's a great thing to listen to during your commute when you get tired of music, news, sports and weather.

You’re right - we should go back 8,000 years and correct the mistakes of the past. The Sumerians did it, the Hitites did it, Egyptians, Hebrews, Greeks and Romans all did it too

Typical westerners may get the pronunciation wrong, but it is they who preserved these artifacts in the first place. For example, see how well Napoleon's men preserved Egyptian artifacts vs how callously the Egyptian Pashas treated the monuments.

Also, the Egyptian Islamists have said if they come to power, they’ll destroy it all! It’s all infidel pagan to them!
To an Islamist there is no history before Islam.

Remember the feel-good PBS period drama, “Downton Abbey?” The structure used for the exterior shots of the home of the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) was Highclere Castle in Hampshire, England. Highclere was the real-life home of George Herbert, Lord Carnarvon, who bankrolled Howard Carter’s excavation of the tomb of King Tut.

Yes, I agree.

And muzzie lunatics (redundant) are always blowing up anything not Islam related.

I suspect that if it hadn’t been a westerner finding the tomb of Tut, all that historic treasure would have been melted down.

“The structure used for the exterior shots of the home...”

They also did some scenes in the interior. That show enabled the owner to preserve the mansion.
