If they know what's good for them in November, they will STFU over this issue.

I think this is red herring set up by the RATs to screw the stupid Repubos. Those in the Repubo Party that want to push this issue are politcally suicidal. If a renewal bill gets to the President's desk prior to the election, he will be put in a no-win situation. Sign it and he's hosed, veto it and he looks bad to the bleeding heart dipstick so-called "moderate" voters, and he's hosed. The Republican Party has nothing to gain by bringing this up. Whoever wrote this story is trying to bait the moron crowd.

All Elitists, be they Republican or Democrat, want to disarm the peasents.

Gun control as practiced in this country is incremental. First ban the "small concealable" guns, then ban the cheap "Saturday night specials", then ban the "ugly military style" guns, then ban the "sniper rifles", then the "bullet spraying (semi-automatic)" guns. After all this, there isn't much left.

How do you eat a whole elephant? One bite at a time.

These people who want the assault weapon ban continued just don't get it. It is a freedom and a rights issue, not a gun issue.

I agree with your analysis.

You know, people talk a lot on FR about single-issue voters.
This is my one issue.

NRA Bush Endorsement Not Certain

NewsMax | 8/10/04 | Dave Eberhart
Since 1980, when Ronald Reagan received the first presidential endorsement by the National Rifle Association, no Republican candidate has lost an election with the endorsement – and no Republican has won without it.
Bush may very well not get the NRA endorsement this time around. Hello, President Kerry.

If it is allowed to expire, it will be President Bush's fault, and we'll let people know that," said Chad Ramsey, a regional director for the Brady Campaign. "He is responsible. It will have expired on his watch. If that's the case, there will be a backlash. People will be angry he let this happen, and people will probably show up at the voting booth with that in mind."

Riiggghtt...

Is this even showing up on anybodies radar screen out side of the pro-second amendment community and the gun control crowd? Is gun control even in the top 20 issues for this campaign? Heck, even the mainstream liberal media isn't even talking about this. I imagine it will make the news cycle for about a day on September 13th when it expires.( and it WILL expire on the 13th since the house hasn't even taken up the issue AND has no plans to AND they are in recess until September 8th.)In a week after it expires it will be totally forgotten as an issue by the "average" American.

He'll get it in just over four weeks, I'll bet. There are only 4 weeks left on the AWB. Nobody but the Feinstein Fringe wants to get anywhere near it this close to the election. It's dead. The NRA is just giving GWB a gentle reminder about proper etiquette on the issue.

What everyone needs to worry about is what happen next year. I'd recommend buying any toys you want before then.

Is that enough to guarantee that we're safe?

I swear I won't rest easy until this thing dies.

No. I talk to plenty of gun owners who've never even heard of the AWB. That tells me that the large majority of the general population have no clue such a thing even exists.

I am tired of all of these politicians of both parties ignoring the obvious when it comes to decisions like this. The point that is never made is that the law is blatantly unconstitutional. It really shouldn’t matter what the politically astute thing to do is, or what they think the right thing to do is. The founders already made the decision. It reminds me of churches deciding how they feel about homosexuality. Sorry, it doesn’t matter how you feel, God already decided. I’m not trying to compare our founding fathers to God, but you get the idea. The difference is that there is a way to change the Constitution if you don’t like it. Pass an amendment. Otherwise, anyone who votes for the continuation of this ban should be found as violating their oath of office and impeached. In my opinion, politician’s constant ignoring of the Constitution make them domestic enemies that we should be actively trying to remove from office. Of course, I realize that that would be all of them. I say, that’s a good start.

Thanks for the ping; I was just looking at this thread. 45Auto has it right, any Republican who's on the wrong side of this issue is politically suicidal. And to think that THIS time around they're going to ban all those armor-piercing 30-30s...

At the same time, however, a band of moderate Republicans have stood in stark opposition to their more conservative colleagues in House leadership posts.

Moderate Republicans? Let's call a spade a spade, shall we? Liberal Republicans. ......or RINOs.
