Raleigh, N.C. – The battle for North Carolina’s 7th Congressional district seat between Republican candidate Ilario Pantano and Democratic Rep. Mike McIntyre is virtually tied, according to a new SurveyUSA poll released today by the Civitas Institute. According to the poll of 450 registered voters in that district, 46 percent of voters said they would vote for Pantano if the election for United States House of Representatives were held today. Forty-five percent said they would vote for McIntyre, and nine percent of voters said they are undecided. However, when looking at those who are most likely to vote in 2010,...

New polling released by Democrat Julie Lassa's campaign shows her race with Republican Sean Duffy for the 7th Congressional District seat is a dead heat. The poll, conducted for Lassa's campaign by the D.C.-based firm Garin-Hart-Yang Research, shows Duffy leading Lassa 42 percent to 41 percent, within the margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. The telephone survey was conducted Sept. 26 and 27 among 504 likely voters in the 7th CD. Seven percent of those polled said they would vote for independent candidate Gary Kauther, and 10 percent were undecided.
  • Republicans looking to put more NC races in play

RALEIGH, N.C. - Piqued by their national political momentum, Republicans seeking to regain control of the U.S. House have expanded their focus in North Carolina to target at least three congressional seats held by Democrats. The movement, backed by large advertising buys, marks a new expansion into districts that Democrats handily won just two years ago. A pro-business group allied with the GOP will begin airing ads this week in an effort to bring down North Carolina Reps. Larry Kissell, Bob Etheridge and Heath Shuler.

Save a runoff in October, Tuesday's primary action will be the last for House candidates this cycle. And it's fitting that we end this anti-incumbent primary season with a few incumbents -- Reps. Charles Rangel (D) and Carolyn Maloney (D) -- in some degree of danger. And it's also appropriate that several races will feature Tea Party challengers facing more establishment favorites in GOP primaries. So, we end where we began. Very fitting. Here are our top 10 primaries to watch on Tuesday[analysis at link]: 1. 1. NY-15 [Primary challenge to Charlie Rangel] 2. NY-23 [Doug Hoffman vs Matt Doheny]...

Tuesday is primary day in the Empire State, and one of the big GOP battles is taking place out in Eastern Long Island over the right to take on four-term liberal incumbent Democrat Rep. Tim Bishop. Here’s the line-up: [paraphrase: see article for details] Randy Altschuler: formerly of the Green Party, considered a primary challenge to conservative NJ incumbent Rep. Scott Garrett Ed Cox: Nixon son-in-law donated to Dede Scozzafava & Charlie Crist And last but not least is the man who’s campaign got a huge lift this week from Rush Limbaugh, conservative George Demos. After Republicans nominated businessman Tim Burns as their special election candidate in the 12th Congressional District, state party chairman said he hoped that military veteran Bill Russell would get behind the GOP’s candidate. But Russell, ever the anti-establishment candidate, is sticking to his guns. He’s continued to criticize the process by which Burns was nominated. He’s preparing to go up against Burns in the May primary to be held the same day as the special election. And he says—only half-jokingly—that he won’t even vote for Burns over Democrat Mark Critz in the special election, opting instead to write himself in....

Democratic state Sen. Tarryl Clark has officially jumped into the race to challenge U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann. "Washington isn't working for Minnesota families, and neither is Michele Bachmann," Clark said at a news conference Thursday at the State Capitol in St. Paul, flanked by family members and supporters. "I'll fight every day for people, not a political agenda." Clark spent much of the news conference bashing Bachmann and did not mention by name her Democratic rival, Dr. Maureen Reed.

A report that Congressman Rick Boucher might be contemplating retirement brought a quick denial this week from the Abingdon Democrat. It also brought an interesting reaction from a leading Republican who's considering a challenge, Salem Delegate Morgan Griffith. When Washington news organizations suggested that Rick Boucher might be ready to retire from his seat representing the ninth district, the congressman quickly sent them a statement saying he had given no consideration to retiring and is planning to seek re-election. After the news reached Richmond, Salem Delegate and House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith said he's still weighing a possible run for...

With a political arms race in full force, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) has raised almost $750,000 in less than 48 hours since his shout of "You lie!" to President Obama during the Wednesday address to Congress, almost matching the Internet-fueled haul of his likely Democratic opponent. A senior GOP official said Wilson, who apologized to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel after the health-care speech but has since refused a more public apology, has turned his own previous sleepy campaign machine into an Web-friendly effort. Just as liberals have poured cash into the campaign of Rob Miller, who lost...
