Westerners 'programmed for fatty foods and alcohol'
BBC ^ | July 14, 2011 | Unknown

Westerners could be genetically programmed to consume fatty foods and alcohol more than those from the east, researchers have claimed.

Scientists at the University of Aberdeen say a genetic switch - DNA which turns genes on or off within cells - regulates appetite and thirst.

The study suggests it is also linked to depression.

Dr Alasdair MacKenzie conceded it would not stop those moving to the west adapting to its lifestyle.

>

"The fact that the weaker switch is found more frequently in Asians compared to Europeans suggests they are less inclined to select such options.

"These results give us a glimpse into early European life where brewing and dairy produce were important sources of calories during the winter months.

"Thus, a preference for food with a higher fat and alcohol content would have been important for survival.

They say that like it’s a BAD thing.

>> The study suggests it is also linked to depression.

Well, yeah... but only when we run low on fatty foods and alcohol.

It is true. I get depressed when there is no fatty food and alcohol around.

Viva Decadence!! I'll pass on the white rice.

Pass the lard-fried rice and sake!

Nothing says summer like a well-marbled, grilled ribeye enjoyed with an adult beverage while dining on the deck.

Tofu and green tea have their places, somewhere, I just haven’t found them yet. :)

*disclaimer - I like a spicy Ma Po Tofu once in awhile, but then, pork is involved. More grease for me!

“Viva Decadence!! I'll pass on the white rice.”

Good idea. “Nourishing Traditions Cookbook” states that westerners should limit the amount of rice they eat...our pancreas is different from an Asian’s pancreas and can't handle as much rice.

Western Civilization and beer, wine, liqueurs and spirits are deeply intertwined.

Even the Bible says “fat renders flavor” and “strong drink (wine) sooths the man", thank you God.

Don't know about that, but a local joint here that brews their own beer also does a “duck fat sweet potato french fry” that is beyond belief good. My personal favorite on their beer list is one they call “hippy kicker” a hoppie brew slightly bitter (alcohol 14%). Unfortunately they don't do pints only halves.

Ignore my post #16, had just tried to convince my husband to go out for a half and was thinking about it.

Decent! (But only because I don’t really like sweet potatos.)

Nice! I once brewed up an extremely tasty 11.2% beer.

I like to think it’s what made Western Civilization Masters of the Universe.
