In continuation of the detailed underwater survey and mapping of the seabed in the wider area of the Subsea Greek - Italian Interconnection Pipeline ("Poseidon" Pipeline) in the period from 11 to 17 May 2012, the scheduled archaeological investigation was carried out.
The above survey was carried out by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) under the supervision and coordination of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities in the part of the programmed routing of the pipeline on the Greek seabed up to the boundaries of the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone with Italy.
The survey revealed three ancient shipwrecks, two of which dating back to the Roman era (possibly 3rd A.D. century) and one to the Modern era (possibly 17th or 18th century) at depths of 1180m, 1280m and 1375m respectively. The above findings are the deepest located shipwrecks in the Mediterranean and were respectively named "Poseidon 1", "Poseidon 2" and "Poseidon 3" (video 1).
We would like to thank the archaeologist Dr. Dem. Kourkoumelis, who was the head of the on-site research on behalf of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, as well as the crew of the R/V "AEGAEO" and the scientific group of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research for their significant contribution and cooperation (HCMR press release).
The findings neither affect nor are affected by the implementation of the IGI POSEIDON Project. The total of the expenditure of the specific research was borne by the project promoter, YAFA POSEIDON (Natural Gas Subsea Pipeline "Poseidon").

Wow. Shipwrecks and the prospect of treasure and such has created strange bedfellows and murderous enemies so weirdness can’t be dismissed out of hand. Big shout out to the recently passed Clive Cussler who funneled so much of his novels earnings back into finding shipwrecks and advancing the technology to do so. There was a man.
I was once acquainted with one of those active in the first Great Lakes wrecks seeking organizations, and he'd met Clive (RIP) and their group actually used Clive's submersible. Anyone who rolls around in a Duesenberg is aces in my book. :^)
Yeah buddy - let us celebrate the good folks while the evil ones try to darken our hopes and motivation. Those balrogs shall not pass.
