Modern Blackfoot people descend from an ancient ice age lineage

Nations of the Blackfoot Confederacy have long fought to maintain control over their land and water. Oral traditions and archaeological evidence indicate the Blackfoot Indigenous peoples and their ancestors have inhabited a broad swatch of North America more than 10,000 years.

A study published today in Science Advances reinforces that connection. Genetic data confirm modern Blackfoot people are closely related to those who lived on the land hundreds of years ago. The findings also suggest Blackfoot people descend from a previously unknown genetic lineage extending back roughly 18,000 years ago, when people first populated the Americas—evidence that could bolster their claims to their land and water rights...

Today, the Blackfoot Confederacy shoulders the U.S.-Canada border, comprising the Nations of Blackfeet, Kainai-Blood, Peigan-Piikani, and Siksika. Blackfoot people know that their ancestors, since time immemorial, have lived across the Rocky Mountains's eastern slopes and adjacent plains of what is now Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Indigenous oral traditions and archaeological evidence indicate that more than 10,000 years ago these ancestors pursued bison along valleys and lakes carved by glaciers as the last ice age ended.

But U.S. and Canadian governments and energy sector interests have repeatedly threatened these ancestral lands or stripped them away since the 1800s. Blackfoot nations have taken legal actions to try to protect or win them back.

A recent success came in 2023 when, after years of litigation, gas and oil company Solenex LLC relinquished its federal lease to drill in the Badger-Two Medicine area of Montana. Yet other disputes are ongoing in the courts.

IOW, it's really all about destroying an energy source.

All extant humans are descended from Ice Age humans. Tautologically.

“Modern Blackfoot people descend from an ancient ice age lineage”

Same as all the other indians.

“ Solenex LLC relinquished its federal lease”

Why does FedGov get to make the lease if it’s the tribe’s land?

Yes I know reservations are officially federal land, but why?

Shouldn’t it be private property for the tribe to lease or not?

10,000 years ago they kicked somebody else off the land and took over.
There is no such thing as “Indigenous”.
Like all the other immigrants to America.
It’s just a question of when your group got here.

Lands change hands...and that includes lands that are abandoned. Indians were nomads.

Won’t matter, they are being replaced by Indians south of the border, Mexicans and others.

The article does not appear to state which Y-DNA haplogroup is most common among the Blackfoot Indians, but for most indigenous groups in the Americas it is Q, which is found in much lower percentages in Asia and Europe.

I'm in a different haplogroup, but a couple of families I am descended from belong to the Q haplogroup (in Europe). I wonder how it got to their part of Europe.

There’s some evidence that Pacific Islanders and South American natives intermingled sometime in the Middle Ages. I don’t think there’s been a single native group that has been able to hold their land for more than a few hundred years against others.

Yup. As in all the rest of the world, that’s the way it was in PreColumbian America.

Good point, maybe they were out doing the fox chase and didn’t have a fixed abode.

“...we’re one human race...”

I was talking to an Indian and asked him what tribe he was. He gave me the Indian pronounciation and laughed. I laughed too, then asked him what I would know it as.

“It means ‘The People’. We don’t have names for the tribes like you do - that’s a white man’s invention. The people is a tribe, just like the bears or the eagles are a tribe.”

“You were all one tribe?”

“Well ‘The People’ was the tribe - but we were in different groups, its not like we were going to raid and steal and get slaves from our own group!”

(I don’t recall exactly, but I don’t think he said they had names for those other groups. I may be wrong.)

“So are the white guys Squatters?”

In the Seattle area some groups make a big deal out of it. Last year the Seahawks had the local tribe bring out their canoes and got the rookies out on the lake paddling around. Saying something like “We only found it fitting that we invite them as our facility is sitting on their land...”

Many of the progressive churches have statements regarding native land too.

“The community of Northminster Presbyterian Church recognizes and grieves for the deep injustices that we, as a community and as an institutional church have inflicted in the past and continue to inflict upon the Indigenous peoples dwelling on this land. As a first step, we wish to acknowledge that our church stands on unceded land and our debt with its original stewards.”
