Kuhner: The case for McCain
The Washington Times ^ | July 6, 2008 | Jeffrey T. Kuhner

Posted on 07/05/2008 7:23:57 PM PDT by FocusNexus

Sen. John McCain should be the next president of the United States. He is wrong on many issues - global warming, campaign finance-reform and immigration (to name a few). But on the central challenges of our time, he has demonstrated the judgment and courage necessary to be the leader of the Free World. In comparison to his Democratic rival for the White House, Sen. Barack Obama, the Republican maverick is clearly the better man - and the better candidate.

.....

Mr. McCain is the very opposite of Mr. Obama. The Arizona Republican is a battle-hardened war hero, who spent five years being tortured in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp. On the other hand, Mr. Obama is a vacuous, antiwar leftist. He champions appeasement abroad and milk-toast socialism at home. His call for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq would snatch military defeat from the jaws of victory. On abortion, he is to the left of many in his own party. Mr. Obama even supports partial-birth abortion. If he cannot honor the sacrifices of our fallen soldiers or defend innocent, vulnerable human life, he is not worthy to lead this great nation.

A contest between Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama is no contest. American voters must reach the same conclusion.

I say this in all seriousness and with no malice - I’ve been doing some thinking lately, about how we see something idiotic in the news, such as the “dumbest criminals” and “Darwin Award Winners” stuff, and we joke “probably votes Democrat”. I can’t honestly do that anymore. “votes GOP” comes to mind just as readily.

Along similar lines, I’ll never laugh about France again either, seeing as how “Great” Britain and Canada are such shameful appeasers concerning Islam.

We’re not in Kansas anymore. sigh

He is a moderate New Yorker/Jew...

Revealing your bigotry there, Psycho.

Focus, I admire what you've tried to do on this thread, but it's hopeless. The crowd you're struggling to try to reason with cannot be reasoned with. Contrary to what they claim to be, these people are not classical conservatives. In his comment I quoted above, I think Psycho inadvertently revealed who most of these people really are.

It's been 20 years since the election of 1988. In these two decades, I have yet to see an election, presidential, senatorial, congressional, or state, when this crowd has liked any Republican. There's a good reason. This crowd is not, nor is it likely they have ever been Republicans any more than they are classical conservatives. They are the far Right fringe who, if they vote at all, always vote for fringe candidates and/or parties.

They have been busy on FR ever since this site's beginnings trying to brow-beat people into not voting for Republicans. The individuals may or may not change from election cycle to election cycle, but their message is always the same. Always anti-Republican and, interestingly, rarely anti-Democrat.

This far Right fringe has always been with us, from the Father Coughlin-led movement of the 1930's, to the founding of the John Birch Society of the late 1950's, to the founding of the Libertarian Party in 1971, to Ross Perot's short-lived movement in the 1990's.

Although they represent only a tiny fraction of the American population, they are the dominant group on FR. Although their minds are as closed as Ft. Knox, they are quite free with their insults, sarcasm, and cynical attempts at enforcing their own group-think.

Thanks for the additional info and background.

“Always anti-Republican and, interestingly, rarely anti-Democrat. “ — this I noticed as well. How can any real conservative consider Republicans “not conservative enough” but are content with Democrats? It does make one wonder, doesn’t it?

It's worth bearing in mind that David Duke, the neo-Nazi, ran for president twice. Once as a Republican, but also once as a Democrat.

McCain is strong on Iraq, on the War on Terror,

Hardly. The WOT is not occurring just in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is a global problem including our own borders. It's a fact terrorists have entered this country as illegal aliens to destroy us from within our own borders. Despite this fact McCain has gone to the socialist extreme of sponsoring legislation with a socialist like Teddy Kennedy to grant Amnesty to illegal aliens. McCain's WOT is endangers the lives of Americans.

he wants to make us energy independent the sensible way,

Oh really then why during an Bill O'Reilly Interview Did McCain state the following?

"O'REILLY: You voted against ANWR drilling. You voted against ANWR.

MCCAIN: Yes, and I'll vote against drilling if they want to drill in the Grand Canyon, and I'll vote against it if they want to drill in the Everglades. And I will try to make it more attractive for Florida and California and other states to have drilling off of their coasts, but I'm not going to force them to because...

O'REILLY: But no one lives in ANWR.

MCCAIN: No, it's pristine beauty.

O'REILLY: So what? Who sees it?

MCCAIN: Well, all I do is believe that we have to preserve some of the great natural treasures of this earth...

O'REILLY: In the Arctic Circle?

MCCAIN: ...no matter where they are, my friend. And I...

O'REILLY: You know, a lot of people aren't going to like that.

MCCAIN: I know a lot of people don't like it, but I am also an environmentalist. And so was Teddy Roosevelt, my hero. And I believe that there are just some things that you have to...

McCain is trying to con everybody into believing he is a conservative by playing both ends against the middle.

he said he will nominated judges like Roberts and Alito,

He's such a conservative on Judicial appointments he actually told a group of Clinton supporters that he supported Bill Clinton with both Ginsberg [sic] and Breyer.

And the bottom line is still McCain or Obama — pick one.
