The selection of Senator Joseph Biden as his running mate has sealed Barack Obama's doom in November. Last month a Zogby poll showed us that he had slipped from an 11 point lead among Catholic voters to a 15 point deficit. By all common sense, this amazing 26 point drop came about because Catholics had just begun to hear about Obama's disgraceful opposition to a bill that would protect abortion victims who had miraculously survived this ultimate rejection by their mothers. To say that Senator Obama was on his way to a record setting loss of Catholic support is an understatement. He needed a dramatic step to keep from going below 40% support in this vital demographic.
Selecting Senator Joe Biden as his running mate was a huge step backward in any Obama effort to shore up Catholic support. Biden is know for his pressing questions about abortion during Senate confirmation hearings. He has stated that support of abortion should be a litmus test for jurists seeks Senate confirmation and he currently has a zero rating from the National Right to life Committee.
Biden's own Catholic Bishop has denounced politicians who support abortion and likened such positions to those who refused to support laws outlawing slavery in the 19th century. Biden's Bishop has even stated that abortion supporting Catholic politicians should not receive Holy Eucharist.
More than this, Biden has not just supported abortion but butted heads with the Catholic Church over the matter saying this in the Christian Science Moniter August 27, 2007): "My views are totally consistent with Catholic social doctrine ... There are elements within the church who say that if you are at odds with any of the teachings of the church, you are at odds with the church. I think the church is bigger than that.."
Statements like this will not swing true Catholics to his side, but they will keep the firestorm over Barack Obama's attacks on the Born Baby Protection Act raging.
I used to say we should work to make this election about abortion. But it really didn't take any work at all.
What is this? The most arrogant team ever to run for President ever? No sir, the church ISN’T bigger than that!
Biden evidently knows very little about the history of the Catholic Church. He is very fortunate to live in the twenty-first century.
A September 2007 Pew survey showed white evangelical Protestants agreeing that abortion should be illegal in all or most cases by a 65-31 margin; Catholics favored keeping abortion legal in all or most cases by a 51-44 margin (with no appreciable difference between Hispanic and non-Hispanic Catholics). On a related issue that helps measure the intensity of anti-abortion views, the same poll showed white evangelicals opposing embryonic stem cell research by 57-31, while white non-Hispanic Catholics favored it by 59-32.

Wait a minute... don’t discount the rather sizeable “fallen Catholic” vote, especially among those middle class whites who cling to their guns and religion along with their bitterness with the economy. That’s Joe’s core constituency. This makes perfect sense, now.
