Instead, it is more likely that they disappeared 40,000 years ago because of interbreeding and assimilation with our early modern human ancestors, scientists believe.
An analysis of archaeological evidence dating back 200,000 years strips away some of the myths surrounding Neanderthals and reveals they were more advanced and sophisticated than has widely been thought. The differences between the two human sub-species are not enough on their own to account for the demise of the Neanderthals, say the two US and Dutch researchers.
Dr Paola Villa, from the University of Colorado Museum, and Professor Wil Roebroeks, from Leiden University, wrote in the online journal Public Library of Science ONE: 'Genetic studies now suggest that the debate on the demise of the Neanderthals needs to be reframed in terms of some degree of interbreeding.
'In that sense, Neanderthals did not go extinct, even though their distinctive morphology did disappear.

Well, this explains what I observe every time I visit the grocery store.
Of course it’s possible there NEVER even was any Neanderthals....

Interbreeding not inbreeding.
In other words they bred with the other humans that immigrated into Europe.
But there were a lot less Natives then immigrants. So the end result was like a drop of ink in a gallon of milk. They were diluted and spread out.
The fact that a male Neanderthal/female Cro-Magnon would have probably resulted in the female and probably baby dying while male Cro-Magnon/female Neanderthal would have resulted in a live birth and live female would not help to keep the Neanderthal culture alive.
I’ve agreed with 99% of what Thomas Sowell has said, as far back as I can remember (early 90s...for reading him). Thomas Sowell is and always will be one of the clearest and best thinkers I can ever cite, and as far as I’m concerned, ranks with the best of the political philosophers in history. I cannot speak highly enough of this man’s intelligence and perception.
Perhaps they adopted socialism.
I once knew a married couple who were both intelligent but they both had an odd quirk.
I have seen them several times jump to a conclusion then stick by their initial idea no matter what. It can sometimes be a real time saver but some times they are just wrong. They were both fairly successful in a way tho they raised two children who were just plain sorry.
So far the picture is incomplete due to the decades spent mired in the Replacement Model; technology which enables the recovery and study of very ancient DNA has shown that regional “types” are in the foundations, and other surviving remains (like the Denisovans) have barely left any remains but remain in the living world genome.
I too agree with Sowell tho not quite 99%. Probably closer to 90% and that is about as much as I agree with anyone.

My wife has what I call the east coast head, maritimes. By that I mean it’s big! lol. At least it looks like it because she’s so small. I guess that makes her smarter than me, but you’d never know it.

I’ve had my DNA tested, and I’m 3.2% Neanderthal. I have more Neanderthal DNA than 96% of the population. And what’s funny is, all my life I joked that I was part caveman (well, cavewoman.) As it turns out, I am.
I remember a discussion, once upon a time, had with a friend and we were looking at time-lines. The jest of the conversation was this ... according to recorded truths, every two thousand years or such a major event takes place. In this instance we were discussing flood, birth to present day. Will leave the thought there for in our discussion we could find missing links and had to fall back to ‘did not know’. Writing the volumes of ‘do not know’ verses writing the book of ‘known’ ... the library of ‘known’ is one page while the books of ‘unknown’ fill infinite libraries with infinite volumes. Is the dilemma of the mind, forever (maybe), thus (imho) nothing is invented but is instead discovered.
