Secret Service guys went through our bags. Never had that done before, but it's a good thing.

Given the post-911 world, I don't begrudge them. They requested to pat my bags to make sure there wasn't any weapons or other dangerous things hidden. Since all the stuff in the duffle is packed in individual plastic bags, I just dumped them out. The Olive Drab Green contents of one caught their eye and I answered it was a flight suit and a flight jacket for "Fighter Pilot Bush". They seemed impressed with the number of costumes we had.

Given the 2000 St Pat's parade problem, where men in suit threw 100 pound camera women like rag dolls, and Hillary's advance guy retiring and mentioning his goon squads in his book, we were initially suspecious of who they were.

The day that the St Pat's news came out and the media was reporting it as USSS, I said right then and there, it WASN'T them, it had to be Hillary's people.

But the two guys yesterday were Secret Service. I had the local cops find out for me. They weren't wearing their little pins, so I was suspicious, and then the pin they showed me was not the usual one.

Yes they were, I was just talking about why we were suspecious of those approaching from Hillary's direction.

They may also have been some other Federal Law Enforcement Officers from something like the US Marshals. We've seen them detailed at some of the really big events. As this was a small event, my guess is they're from the local USSS office.

Just three things to add to the report.

As a gag, I told the crowd that we felt bad for them that Hillary wouldn't conduct a normal book signing, one where the author reads from their work and answers questions.

So we'd do the next best thing and WE would read from Chapter 1 of Hillary's book, which we did, sort of. Over the megaphone, I recited the lyrics of "Stand By Your Man".

I got through about half of it when the Captain from the Ridgewood Police made it across the street. He suggested that the megaphone might rile up the line and that with the number of officers assigned that would be a problem from them, so we decided not to "interact verbally" (at least with the megaphone). Of course later in the day as they did a few tacky things, we did provide an appropriate response.

I scouted the location a few days before and would NEVER have expected the physical intinidation that a few attempeted, like the guy who went towards Race. Rich liberals are more angry than most any kind of poor people.

There was one minor "incident" with an SUV. I stood at a curb, at a "crosswalk". Every so often on that street, there is a gap between parking spots that's stripped off to so no parking. An SUV left and another backed into the space, continuing through the parking space and the "crosswalk" and hitting my right arm as I held up a sign.

As it was effectively behind me, I didn't see it coming and it pushed my arm out of the way. It was going slow, but the power of an automobile is still impressive. It's going to do what it wants to do and you'll just get moved.

The police officer behind us saw it happened and detained the driver briefly and informed them that I'd been hit by the vehicle. They said they didn't know it, but apologized at the officer's suggestion.

From the choice of words the officer used, I get the impression that he felt the driver might have done it deliberately. So thanks to the officer for interveining.

Personally, it's reminded me that autos are extremely powerful and to not get complacent out on the road.

Good point. It's always a good idea to check them out. One time when Staytrue, Kristinn and I FReeped x42 (Nov '01 IIRC) some guy came up to us and started asking questions, acting like he was USSS (and dressed to give that stereotypical USSS look). His act smelled fishy to me, and Kristinn pointedly asked him if he was USSS. The guy said he wasn't, but he refused to say who he was with. He had come over to us just before Clinton made his less-than-grand exit, and we all decided that his job had been to try and distract us while Clinton escaped. It didn't work, and we ended up FReeping Clinton bigtime; but back to the point.

Hillary! has folks on her "team" whose job it is to intimidate - by whatever means. And you did right by checking out credentials yesterday.

Excellent FReep yesterday, firebrand! And two SATANS, too! I'll bet Hillary! was so angry at your presence that she was already seeing double. One of these book-signings soon... she's gonna have a meltdown. And the press will be there to see it. Whether they'll cover it is another thing entirely. But either way, FReepers here will know about it because FReepers will be there to see it realtime.

I spent part of the day mingling with Hillary's fans and the Bookends people.

I estimated the crowd at about 500 at 2:00; perhaps 800 by the end of the day. The Bookends people were issuing passes until they ran out of books so they could have counted. The two munchkins running the line didn't know, though. The proprietor of the Gap Kids next door thought it was the largest crowd this bookstore had gotten. Previous celebs included Giuliani, Hulk Hogan and Bernie Mac.

"Brian Holman at 93.5" was taping for awhile.

People at the end of the line were concerned that they wouldn't get in before Mrs. Clinton left. She arrived at 3:30, the store manager said they were promised an hour and a half. One woman asked whether that time started at 3:00, when the event was supposed to start, or at 3:30. The store manager finally stated that she would be there till 5:00.

There were two lines. One was for folks with a ticket to get in for a signature. The waiting list was for those who would have a chance to get a book and a signature - there was no guarantee.

In fact, Mrs. Clinton signed until about 5:30. Everyone with a ticket or on the waiting list got in. There were a few disgruntled folks who were limited to one book per family. (Unfortunately, I didn't think till later that I could have had one of these people pay for me to get one signed for them.)

There was another disgruntled woman who bused up from Atlantic City, hoping to meet Hillary. She had some Senate stationery thanking her for something; she thought that would get her in. The woman's elevator did not reach all the floors, so who knows.

One group of four teenaged girls asked what the commotion was. When informed, one of them positively swooned and wanted to meet Mrs. Clinton. She was disappointed not to get a chance.

The store had an upstairs and a downstairs. There were books upstairs; anyone could go in at any time; I spent about an hour inside during two visits. Mrs. Clinton was downstairs. There must have been two stairways, as well as front and back entrances.

The rest rooms were closed from 1:30 to 5:30. Anyone waiting on line in the somewhat hot sun with a weak bladder was in trouble.

Mrs. Clinton arrived through a side entrance to the parking lot in a black Mercury. She entered the building from the rear. She left in a black and white van with NY plates.

A few of her fans, including a hairdresser who wanted to do her hair, watched her leave from the rear parking lot. I got a few analog pictures which are probably fuzzy. She waved at us, as she had when she arrived.

She was wearing a black suit, surprise. One woman said she was thinner than she expected.

Mrs. Clinton made a lot of friends yesterday; she strengthened her friendships with others. We made a few friends, also.

Flashing star power from cover to cover

Saturday, July 12, 2003

RIDGEWOOD - With its velvet ropes, tight schedule, and high-strung aides, Hillary Rodham Clinton's book signing at Bookends on Friday was shaping up to be an event devoid of actual human emotion.

But that was before the author strode into the room.

Cameras flashed. Spines straightened, and hands clapped. The first few dozen of the hundreds of people in line at the bookstore leaned forward to look, and there was Clinton - Democratic New York senator, author, former first lady, famously humiliated spouse, and perhaps future presidential candidate - beaming her megawatt smile around the room.

"Thank you for coming!" she said, barely audible above the applause, her eyes as wide as her smile. "Thank you for coming!" She took a copy of her million-selling memoirs, "Living History," off the closest pile and posed for the cameras with it, just for a moment. Then she slid behind a table and started signing.

It was about 3:30 p.m.

The first person in line, Marty Kelly of Westwood, had been waiting more than eight hours, since 6:50 a.m. Clinton looked up at him, beamed, shook his hand, thanked him for coming, and got to work. It took a little while: Kelly, his wife, Sandra, and his two daughters each bought five books, the maximum allowed.

"Some people won't even take the time to shake your hand and such. She was very courteous," he said later. "I'm a big fan of her."

Sandra Kelly admitted later that they would sell some of the autographed copies on eBay. But the whole Kelly family said they were impressed with Clinton in their brief but dazzling encounter.

"I told her she was a lot prettier in person than on TV," Sandra Kelly said. "She said, 'Thank you very much.' " Outside Bookends, the line had swelled by the hundreds, down the block and around the corner and past the barbershop. Ridgewood police officers, Secret Service men in eerily crisp suits, and bookstore employees buzzed back and forth. Some of the people in the line, which was overwhelmingly female, had been there for hours, coming equipped with umbrellas and lawn chairs.

All of them were excited.

"The chance to get the book signed and actually see her for five seconds is pretty neat," said Ann Davis, who came from Highland Mills, N.Y. "It's a fascinating story, and I hope it's just started."

Like others in line, Davis said Clinton's story of pushing for professional success while struggling with society's expectations for women was the real heart of the book. Sure, they said, the book has that little section about how much Clinton was hurt when she learned her husband had lied to her about that woman, Monica Lewinsky. But that's not why they stood in line for hours.

"I respect and admire her," said Linda Marcus of Fort Lee. "I'm not interested in all that gossipy stuff. I'm more interested in her life. She's around the same age as I am, so I can relate to that."

She acknowledged that not everyone relates to Clinton - including some women.

"I was with some friends at the Jersey shore, female friends, and they all said that," Marcus said. "They didn't like the 'Hillary type.' They say she's too aggressive. But I respect that. Because how's she going to get to that point unless she is aggressive and she is pushy?"

Across the street, about a dozen protesters organized by the conservative Web site Free Republic.com hoisted signs and unfurled a banner that read "America can't trust Hillary." One of them, Mike Liebert of North Caldwell, held a handwritten sign referring to a decade-old scandal, calling her "the commodities scam queen."

"This is an evil person and needs to be stopped," Liebert said. "People need to see that there's opposition. It's important to me."

Back over at Bookends before the book-signing began, organizers were just as devoted to their plan. Soon after the protesters began to demonstrate outside, the Secret Service took journalists inside, downstairs to a velvet-roped pen.

Aides fussed over the red carpet and the enlarged book covers on the backdrop. They opened stacks of books to the title page, so Clinton wouldn't fumble when she signed. They hovered, ready, waiting.

Yet when Clinton arrived, the atmosphere seemed somehow more authentic. Her eyes twinkle as she looks each fan in the eye and thanks them; in a few moments of contact, she manages to shake a hand, hear a story of how they crossed paths two years ago, ask a child how old she is, and still sign a book with her black pen and slide it to her right.

At her left, aides stood ready with more books opened to the title page, poised to slide them in front of her.

Outside, Susan Coutant of Harriman, N.Y., stood waiting in a patch of shade. She said the wait was worth it.

"She's an intelligent, ambitious woman," Coutant said. "You never know. She might be president some day."

The pin one of the guys showed me was bigger than the usual Secret Service pin and had a royal blue flag or cross on it (can't remember). Also these guys did not have the well-tailored look of the typical USSS agent. They were a little scruffy in comparison. I think the guy I spoke to was actually wearing a green suit.

The crowd tended toward middle aged white women. There were some men, some blacks, some kids. A number of people just checking out the scene. One teenager with an ANSWER tee shirt. A couple of wheel chair people were the first ones out of the bookstore.

There were no copies of Ann Coulter's books in the store that I could see. They said they were sold out over the phone. They had the NY Times paperback bestseller list showing; the non-fiction hardcover list was not in evidence.

I overheard Weapons of Mass Destruction and another something about he's the top guy - he has to be responsible, that sounded like a reference to the "error" in the State of the Union address.

There were cops from Ridgewood and Hackensack.

People were told to have their books open to a particular page and have their ticket available. The people on the waiting list had their books signed first, then they paid. This line was still going at least half an hour after Mrs. Clinton departed.

Mrs. Clinton was signing the books. She shook at least one hand and was described as friendly, personable and energetic.

Someone on line mentioned the devil on the other side of the street. It wasn't clear whether they were referring to Dr. Raoul or Race Bannon.

There was one sign in town promoting the book signing.

The article talks about cameras flashing. However, the peasants were not allowed to bring cameras downstairs to take Mrs. Clinton's picture, or anything else, for that matter.

The article claims Mrs. Clinton looked people in the eye. It's hard to believe, given that White House personnel and radio station people weren't allowed to, but probably true given the reactions I observed. I wonder if she found this stressful.

Many people had multiple copies of the book, perhaps buying for friends.

I asked one couple about her commodities history - why did she stop when she hit 100,000. He had a plausible explanation - that she had a tip that the market wasn't going to be good anymore. Do we know if she has gone public with this explanation, or was he making it up on the spot? The couple seemed to be fans, but not as gushy as some of the others.

One woman thought the Freeper signs were insulting, but conceded they had a right to say these things.

Everyone, besides me, referred to her as Hillary.

No one mentioned her running for President.

I had the privledge of participating in this Hillary FReep from two perspectives. I first went in as a journalist, and later, a FReeper. The handlers told me they weren't taking anymore press people when I arrived at 2:15, so I started interviewing people in line.

I spoke to one young man who was having 6 books signed for relatives. Then I spoke to Jack, a young man originally from Russia. He was having nine books signed, all to sell on ebay. He was reluctant to talk price, but felt he could get over $100 each. He had done this before with other famous authors. Jack said that he "hated Hillary, but was a Monica fan." Interesting how this former victim of socialism was using a socialist for capitalist purposes.

The co-owner saw me, and invited me in. This time, I was accepted for checking by the dogs, and then was put in the press area. Hillary arrived at 3:30 using a back entrance. She didn't speak to the press at all, let alone field questions.

I chatted with some of the other press people, and told them the protesters were "quite interesting, especially some guy called 'Raoul.'" Glad to see some of the press did report on you guys.

One of the reporters commented on the sign "commodities scam." He didn't understand it. I explained what it meant. There were about 8 press people there, and around 5 cameras, including two video.

Once were were cleared (by the dogs) for the press area, we could have no further contact with other people. I spoke with one of the co-owners. The first group of 40 people are their "regulars," people who attend EVERY ONE of the 12-16 book signings the store has each month. Then they started letting in people who had the validated bookmarks that gave them the right to a signature. The last group of people were the "stand-bys" who still had to buy the book. Their line started at 6:50 am.

It was difficult to get pictures at first because the people kept blocking the view, but the handlers moved them aside so we could get good shots from time to time.

I had come with some questions ready for my magazine, but she wasn't taking any questions. Her press secretary wouldn't answer them either on the spot. He said that he would have to check what her public statements were on those topics. I'll try to get those answers next week.

After about half and hour, I left and went to the FReep. It was nice seeing some old FReeper friends and meeting new ones. Others described the FReep pretty well. I'll put up some pictures soon. Hope everyone else does, too.

I'm not sure. There seemed to be noise in Sean's background, there was noise on our end and the phone "sidetone" (what you hear in your receiver of your own voice) would cut in and out. So it was hard to carry on the conversation. I just hope I didn't sound like I kept butting in.
