The Newt Evangelization: Gingrich to become Catholic
Deacon's Bench ^ | March 3, 2009 | Deacon Greg Kandra

Posted on 03/03/2009 1:15:09 PM PST by NYer

Buried deep inside this long and wonkish profile of Newt Gingrich in Sunday's New York Times, was this little nugget that, I suspect, went largely unnoticed:

At a moment when the role of religious fundamentalism in the party is a central question for reformers, Gingrich, rather than making any kind of case for a new enlightenment, has in fact gone to great lengths to placate Christian conservatives. The family-values crowd has never completely embraced Newt, probably because he has been married three times, most recently to a former Hill staff member, Callista Bisek. In 2006, though, Gingrich wrote a book called “Rediscovering God in America” — part of a new canon of work he has done reaffirming the role of religion in public life. The following year, he went on radio with the evangelical minister James Dobson to apologize for having been unfaithful to his second wife. (A Baptist since graduate school, Gingrich said he will soon convert to Catholicism, his wife’s faith.)

Kennedy was PART of the secularisation of the office, with his widely-lauded (and episcopally endorsed) protestation that he would never let something as trivial as his religion affect his decisions as President.

Right. A Guiliani Catholic would be OK.

True enough. I do think that anyone with a strong religious faith who is running ought to de-emphasize his denomination and stress a commonly shared Judeo-Christian ethos. Some protestants may actually believe that a Catholic candidate wants to make everyone pray the rosary. Despite the vehement sectarianism that occurs here on FR, we all believe in traditional faith-values and virtues. I have less of a problem with Prots calling me a Mariolater or a tool of the Whore of Babylon than with the Kumbaya Christians. That ardent faith is laudable in the service of Christ.

I do, however, wish that the debates were more respectful and geared toward understanding, rather than this gotcha game(largely involving historical revisionism or selectivity). We ought to simply respect the faith traditions of each other while recognizing that the atheists, humanists, secularists, theological and religious progressives, and liberals are more united than divided and that they are the enemy. And yes, I consider their influence just as destructive as the muslims.

Good for Newt Gingrich...a good man, following his conscience and trying to do the right thing...Always said Newt is the man this country needs, now more than ever..It is just unfortunate about his marriages, but that is the beauty of life and of the Catholic Church- it forgives and wipes the slate clean....many people are reborn again and again through the Sacrament of Penance, a Sacrament where God Himself Forgives the penitent through the Priest who represents him when hearing Confession..we wish many blessed years of happiness for Dr. Gingrich...

Interesting. Sounds a little too sweeping to me, though.

By legally you mean legally in the Church. Because they could always get a divorce.

You seemed to be going back and forth between adultery and the longstanding intent to commit adultery going back to the invalid marriage vow.

Correct, on this topic I am only interested in the laws of the Church. American laws of marriage and divorce are a grotesque absurdity not worth trying to figure out.

You seemed to be going back and forth between adultery and the longstanding intent to commit adultery going back to the invalid marriage vow.

These two are different things. Adultery is a sin that a married person may commit. Invalid marriage happens when there is one or another defect of ability or intent, lack of monogamous orientation is just one of them. I'd be happy to explain if you frame a concrete question, in a day or two. I'll be off for a few days.

I know everything you are "telling" me.

I have the distinction firmly in mind. It seems to me that you are the one who is moving goalposts back and forth.

how can someone who is divorced and remarried become a Catholic? I have a friend who was a protestant, married and had a family then the marriage ended in divorce, he became a catholic, wanted him to marry someone else and the priest said NO WAY, you can only marry once..It doesn’t matter if you married as a protestant, you marry each other and made a covenant oath with God..
