Humans to Blame for Extinction? - Not Necessarily So ...
Science News ^ | July 21, 2009 | Science News

Posted on 07/21/2009 1:09:33 PM PDT by George - the Other

"These findings are inconsistent with the alternative and already hotly debated theory that overhunting by Clovis people led to the rapid extinction of large mammals at the end of the ice age, the research team argues in the PNAS paper."

These animal species survived numerous successive ice ages and warmings without extirpation, but disappeared immediately after the introduction of humans with spears. So, I'm still with Bill Diamond, Charles Kay, and many others.

"This latest discovery flies in the face of the "blame-mankind-for-everything" crowd."

Not so fast. If you read other articles from the same site you find that:

1. "Silver Bullet" theories like asteroid impacts are not generally associated with mass extinctions.

2. What may have caused most mass extinction events is "sick earth syndrome" which they compared to global warming.

3. Therefore if we continue to drive our SUV's around we will generate a new "sick earth" event which will cause a mass extinction.

So we can safely take all the money we are spending on tracking asteroids and give it to Al Gore so he can continue to generate hot wind.

“Not so fast. If you read other articles from the same site you find that ... “

The article I posted was just one at the Science News source that pointed to an asteroid/comet impact as being the source of the extinctions and not humans ...

They’re thinking too hard.

Ruminant mammals survived, non ruminant grazers were wiped out.

“Ruminant mammals survived, non ruminant grazers were wiped out.”

On the episode of Animal Planet’s “Prehistoric Park,” that dealt with sabre-toothed cats, they pointed out that these cats went extinct because their prey animals, the grazers, died out due to a changing climate.
