Abortion clinic director blames new state law for closure
Knoxville News Sentinel ^ | August 18, 2012 | Kristi L. Nelson

One of the two Knoxville clinics that provide surgical abortions closed last week, and its longtime director blamed a new Tennessee law.

Deb Walsh, director of Volunteer Women's Medical Clinic on Concord Street, said in a letter to the Abortion Care Network that her clinic, licensed as an ambulatory surgical treatment center by the state, had been unable to provide abortions since July 1, when Tennessee's "Life Defense Act of 2012" took effect. The law requires doctors performing abortions at clinics to have hospital privileges.

That meant the retired obstetrician/gynecologist who had been performing surgical abortions there for decades could no longer legally do the procedures. The longtime director of nearby Knoxville Center for Reproductive Health, Knoxville's only other surgical abortion provider, applied for and received hospital privileges and could have performed abortions at both facilities, but he had a massive stroke and died weeks after receiving the privileges, leaving both clinics scrambling to find qualified doctors with hospital privileges willing to step in.

Last week, Walsh, who had been at Volunteer for more than 30 of its 38 years, gave up.

Did you notice they also disabled reader comments below the article? This always seems to happen when they don't want something the print challenged or a rebuttal to it. It also happens almost anytime an illegal alien does a violent crime. I wish Frank Cagle was still editor.

I thought the complete article was pretty well written. As to the comm boxes - well, most times they are a waste anyway.

Yes. The article reports that new doctors are refusing to even learn how to do the “procedure”.

“The difficulty with the younger physicians who have grown up in this hostile world” is that they aren’t interested in training to do the controversial procedure, she said. “The older physicians that we have been working with understand the world pre-Roe vs. Wade. Those people have stayed very committed to make sure … there are places (women) can receive those services safely, legally and affordably.”

Notice how the pro-life side is referred to as being hostile. Dangerous pro-lifers. Doctors afraid to sign up as abortionists because they might get killed? Give me a break.

Abortionists have always been the scum of the profession, nice to see that they still are. No one wants abortionists on staff at hospitals, they don’t want one as their family physician or as a member of their church, according to this article. Maybe there IS hope for this country?

I am not an authority, but I do recall that many early Christian churches were erected on the sites where the false gods (moloch, et al) were worshiped.

I do know that Knoxville has occasional Byzantine Masses using an existing church and a traveling priest.

No surprise. The evil ones are masters in the use of language to get their message out. I find our side sorely lacking, with a few exceptions.

They fight dirty and we seem to sometimes handicap ourselves by our honesty and fairness.

The description makes me picture a shriveled old man who's spending the latter years of his life ripping babies out of wombs.

Worse that any horror story on TV.

A huge reason we moved from California to eastern Tennessee is because it’s in the Bible Belt. For 2 years we’ve lived just outside of Knoxville, and it’s wonderful. It took us a while to “buy into” the sincere goodness of the people after the shallow/superficial mindset in California, but that’s just life here.

I’ve had the opportunity to locate to the Knox. area. I’ve heard good and bad about the crime rate and the gun laws. Any comment on that aspect? Thanks in advance!

It appears that the gun laws are reasonable. Everyone has one (at least), and they’re part of Tennesseans’ everyday life. Our NRA logos on the cars match most cars here. (In CA, it caused raised eyebrows.)

We’ve seen no unreasonable crime incidents, although we’ve heard that meth use and cooking is a problem.

There are supposed to be three separate Tennessees. East is good (per the easterners!), middle (Nashville area) is worse, and west (Memphis) is terrible. No idea how true that is, but that’s what we hear. We’re still learning all the nuances of Tennessee living, but are glad to be here.

The thing that bothers us most is locals’ (poor) treatment of pets and animals in general. In our area, at least, there are no ordinances for protecting or pets.

A good source of info is www.city-data.com.

Tennessee is conceal carry with permit. The crime rate depends on where you live really. I live 20 miles north of Knoxville and it's real low. You do a lot better by living outside of Knoxville. The areas north are easier as far as getting from point A to Point B goes. Communities like Corryton, Halls, Powell, Heiskell, Maynardville, Gibbs, Clinton, Andersonville, which are either in Knox, Union, or Anderson Counties are pretty safe. East Knoxville I could go well into the county toward a community called Four Way Inn or Carter. South Knox County is good also but logistics especially right now are an issue. West Knoxville and Knox County is major urban sprawl with Karns and Hardin Valley likely being the better of the choices. You really don't want to be in Knoxville itself IMO.

Older communities that were safe middle class when I was a kid back in the 1960's are becoming rough such as Whittle Springs/North Hills where the Newsome/Christian torture, rape & murder took place, anything near Magnolia Ave, Cecil Ave Cherry street, Washington Ave, areas forget it, Norwood and Inskip where I once lived are becoming an illegal alien area and are declining as well. The outlying areas don't have the section 8 housing problems Knoxville does.

I'd pitch a tent on the lake before I'd move in the housing projects in Knoxville. That's advice from the son of a man who grew up in Lonsdale which even in the 1930's and 40's was the poor side of town.
