0:00·hello and welcome to world history
0:02·encyclopedia my name is Kelly and today
0:04·I'm joined by Dr Bob Breyer also known
0:07·as Mr mummy Dr Breyer is one of the
0:10·foremost experts on mummies and
0:12·egyptology
0:13·he has investigated some of the world's
0:16·most famous mummies including Ramesses
0:18·the Great and King Tutankhamun and today
0:21·we're going to ask him all about his new
0:24·book Tutankhamun and the tomb that
0:26·changed the world published by Oxford
0:28·University press
0:30·foreign
0:31·[Music]
0:38·thank you so much for joining me today
0:40·Bob
0:41·are we glad to be here
·Tell us all about your book!
0:43·um let's just get right into it do you
0:45·want to tell us a bit about what your
0:46·book is all about yeah I did the book
0:49·with a very specific purpose
0:51·most people know the story of the
0:53·discovery of two tank arm and it's one
0:54·of these stories that people love to
0:55·hear again and again and again of the
0:57·impoverished archaeologist Howard Carter
1:00·hooks up with a wealthy Lord carnarvon
1:03·and they make the discovery of the
1:04·century I mean people are familiar with
1:06·that
1:07·um what a lot of people don't realize is
1:09·that research has been going on since
1:11·then meaning okay so it takes 10 years
1:14·to excavate the tomb there are so many
1:16·Treasures in it they're so fragile they
1:18·have to be preserved um so after 10
1:20·years everything is sent to the Egyptian
1:22·Museum in Cairo
1:24·placed in cases on display and people
1:26·think that's where the story ends but it
1:29·doesn't
1:30·since since all those objects have been
1:32·sent to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo
1:34·there have been loads of research
1:35·projects on the objects and we're
1:37·finding out things about two tank almond
1:39·all the time so the reason I wrote this
1:41·book is to show people how much new
1:43·we've learned about two tank common what
1:45·research looks like when you're doing
1:46·research on a dead pharaoh and things
1:49·like that so I want people to see that
1:50·there's high-tech stuff going on about
1:52·two Tech common all the time and our
1:54·view of him is changing quite a bit
·Is the book about the mummy of Tutankhamun?
1:56·wow so you're working on are you working
1:59·on like the mummy itself as well in this
2:01·book or do you just talk about some of
2:02·the artifacts or what kind of
2:04·the answer is yes yeah we're doing all
2:08·of that Kelly
2:09·um I I my specialty is mummies I'm I'm a
2:13·specialist with my you know most
2:14·egyptologists have Specialists some guys
2:16·are the translators other guys are
2:18·excavators and mine is mummies you know
2:20·so when when an interesting mummy is
2:22·found on an excavation sometimes I'm
2:24·called in to work on the mummies um one
2:26·of my interesting things about about
2:27·touch the interest started when I
2:29·examined the fetuses of two tank arm and
2:31·you know there were two fetuses little
2:33·mummified fetuses found in Tutankhamun's
2:35·tomb his wife he was a teenager when he
2:37·died he dies at the age of 19 and his
2:39·wife is about 19 when he dies also
2:41·they're both teenagers both his wife
2:43·Uncle Sam and had two miscarriages two
2:45·little girls and they were mummified
2:47·they were in the Tomb and and they
2:49·disappeared for years they were put in
2:50·storage
2:51·um and it took me a couple of years to
2:53·find them but I found them so I examined
2:54·the fetuses I talk a little bit about
2:56·that but more I talk about the mummy of
2:58·Tutankhamun himself
2:59·um because some things that were said
3:01·about the mummy there's been a lot of
3:03·research done
3:04·um things about the mummy I think are
3:06·wrong and I wanted to correct the record
3:08·I want them to say for example
3:10·um it's generally accepted now I think I
3:13·think that two tank common had a club
3:15·foot
3:16·in uh the 19 about 10 years ago two
3:19·tekam was cat scanned and many of the
3:22·researchers thought that the cat scan
3:23·showed that he had a club foot and then
3:25·suggested that he walked on the side of
3:27·his foot so he would have been a
3:28·disabled Pharaoh
3:30·um and and that's generally been
3:32·accepted but when I started going back
3:34·and looking at the records looking at
3:35·the CAT scans and everything it looks
3:37·like he wasn't a disabled Pharaoh he
3:39·didn't have a club foot
3:40·um and I'm not alone in thinking that
3:42·but I'm alone in saying it right now
3:44·um even for example you know one thing
3:47·that started me wondering was too Tech
3:49·almond if you had a club foot he'd been
3:51·examined by two anatomists The Mummy had
3:53·been examined by two anatomists before
3:55·the the CAT scans and they never noticed
3:57·anything unusual about his ankle for
3:59·example or so it puzzled me and then
4:02·when I looked at the CAT scan it wasn't
4:04·clear that he had a club foot then I
4:05·thought what about his feet that is the
4:07·lower limbs would be disfigured also
4:09·because if you walk on the side of your
4:10·foot it's going to affect the lower
4:12·bones of your legs the tibian fibula and
4:15·and they're normal they're perfectly
4:16·normal even the pelvis would be changed
4:18·you know how it is if you have a little
4:19·limp even the pelvis is going to be
4:21·affected you know and that's why people
4:22·have to have hip replacements
4:24·um and he didn't have any of that and
4:26·and further when I started looking at
4:27·his shoes there were about two dozen
4:30·shoes buried with him in the Tomb his
4:32·shoes yeah yeah well you had to take it
4:34·to the next World right he had his
4:35·sandals he had gold sandals he had
4:37·um but but his shoes are perfectly
4:39·symmetrical too and if you walked on the
4:41·side of your foot dragging it certainly
4:43·the shoes would be worn out so all of
4:46·the evidence really changed it
4:47·completely when I looked at the mummy
4:49·and it now seems to me as if he was a
4:51·perfectly healthy teenager
4:53·that's incredible so you're sort of
4:58·restarting the story of Tutankhamun from
5:01·what we thought we knew yeah and you
5:03·know Kelly it has a deeper
5:05·um effect also because everybody felt
5:07·well since he's a fragile Pharaoh
5:10·um he certainly couldn't have gone off
5:11·to war
5:12·but then that changes that and as a
5:14·matter of fact recently there have been
5:16·some blocks discovered from
5:17·Tutankhamun's Mortuary Temple where he
5:19·was worshiped after he died and they
5:21·show him a battle at War so I think he
5:24·may have actually gone into war and for
5:26·example another bit of research on
5:27·Tutankhamun is there was a suit of armor
5:29·was buried with him and people don't
5:31·know that it was it was in terrible
5:33·condition it was leather it's like um
5:36·leather scales that are that are cut out
5:38·and they're all sewn together to form
5:39·like an armor and it was in terrible
5:42·condition it degraded a bit leather
5:44·degrades over the thousands of years
5:46·and nobody wanted to work on it touch it
5:48·but recently some experts have been
5:50·working on it and restoring it and it
5:51·looks like it not only did he have a
5:53·suit of armor but it didn't warn to show
5:55·signs of aware so I think I have a
5:57·chapter in the book on two tank common
5:58·as a warrior that he may have been a
6:00·warrior and that's changing things so
6:02·these are the kinds of things that I do
6:03·in the book
·Do we know how King Tutankhamun died?
6:05·yeah that's incredible because I mean if
6:06·you spend you know we all think one
6:08·thing about him and you've you know
6:10·looked at shoes you've looked at bones
6:11·and now suddenly it's a completely new
6:12·narrative yeah do we do we know I don't
6:15·know a whole lot about Tutankhamun do we
6:17·know how he died and whether has that
6:19·changed with your research no we don't
6:22·know uh we really don't know how he died
6:24·um there's no obvious cause of death
6:27·um for example I wrote a book about oh
6:30·it must be 20 years ago now called the
6:32·murder of Tutankhamun which was based on
6:34·X-rays of Tutankhamun skull which showed
6:37·what looked like a blow to the back of
6:38·the head
6:39·and I thought this might be an Evidence
6:42·of murder now why do I jump to say
6:43·murder you could have fallen off its
6:45·Chariot or anything but when when he
6:47·died his widow ankasanaman the Teenage
6:50·Queen
6:51·write the strangest letter in Egyptian
6:53·history she writes to the enemy King to
6:56·the head-eyed king a great name
6:59·um writes to him and says and she says
7:01·and we have the letter you know we have
7:02·records she says my husband has died I
7:05·have no Sons they say you have many send
7:08·me one of your sons and I will marry him
7:10·and make him king of Egypt never will I
7:12·marry a servant of mine I'm afraid and
7:15·what was the queen afraid of you know
7:16·and but she disappears from history so
7:18·it really sounded like he was murdered
7:20·there were enemies lurking around
7:22·um but but the CAT scan showed to be
7:24·fair that there was no blow the lack of
7:26·head the X-ray was not good enough the
7:28·casket so we don't know how he died so I
7:30·can't say nope I can't jump up and down
7:32·and say murder murder
7:33·um but he dies at the age of 19. it
7:35·could have been an infection
7:37·um we think he had malaria from blood
7:39·tests we can tell so so he could have
7:41·even died from malaria um so we just
7:43·don't know how to jack up and dies at
7:45·the age of 19.
·Why did you decide to write this book on Tutankhamun and his tomb?
7:46·wow such a mystery especially knowing so
7:49·much about him and having so much of his
7:51·personal effects and stuff not even not
7:53·knowing how he dies is like a such an
7:55·important part of his story
7:58·almost annoying that we don't know that
8:01·um
8:02·so you've said you've worked on lots of
8:04·mummies that's your specialty why did
8:06·you decide to write this book about
8:08·Tutankhamun and the things found in his
8:11·in his tomb sure well this is the 100th
8:13·anniversary of the discovery of the Tomb
8:15·so there's been a lot of interest in two
8:17·tank common but also along with that
8:20·there's a new museum being built in
8:22·Cairo called the Grand Egyptian Museum
8:24·and all of two tank Common's objects are
8:28·being moved from the old Museum in Cairo
8:30·out to Giza to the new Museum so while
8:32·they're coming out of the cases there's
8:34·been all this new research and being
8:36·able to get our hands on objects
8:37·actually see them touch them you know
8:39·take photograph them so there's so much
8:41·more information now because of this
8:44·100th anniversary and the grand Museum
8:45·that you know there's just so much stuff
8:47·coming out that I thought would be
8:48·interesting to tell people about it
8:50·did you go into this book with the idea
8:53·that you would be writing something
8:55·brand new or did you think that it would
8:57·just be like an updated version of
8:58·things that we already knew no I thought
9:00·I had new information I knew that there
9:02·were these new researchers and I had
9:04·done a little bit of research so no I
9:05·thought there'd be new things actually
9:07·there were more new things than I
9:08·thought
9:09·um you know finding out things that that
9:10·when I started putting pieces together I
9:13·was surprised for example
9:15·um one of the things that we knew about
9:17·Howard Carter is it he took things from
9:19·the tomb and didn't return them on shame
9:22·on him but um he wasn't interested in
9:24·selling them it wasn't for profit or
9:26·anything like that but he sort of had
9:27·this feeling almost that he owned the
9:29·tomb
9:30·um remember this is 1922 when it's
9:32·discovered and England is ruling Egypt
9:34·it's a colonial situation so in a sense
9:37·he is in charge so so he's taking things
9:39·and he's giving them to friends the
9:40·Souvenirs of the Tomb so I started
9:42·researching that and we knew that we
9:44·knew that and I found letters
9:46·that that
9:47·egyptologist has written about Carter
9:49·thinking taking things and they were
9:51·kind of shocking uh really surprising
9:53·the the extent to which Carter took
9:55·things and the sort of um feeling of
9:57·entitlement almost I mean for example
9:59·the seals through the tomb the the the
10:01·walls were sealed with the necropolis
10:04·Seal of the of the nine jackals and it's
10:06·pretty impressive Stills and he gave
10:08·them away he gave them to Sir Alan
10:10·Gardner who was an egyptologist and
10:12·Gardner gave them to his kids so this is
10:13·what's happening yeah yeah so there's
10:15·more much more and even even there were
10:17·there were necklaces that that
10:18·disappeared and appeared in museums
10:20·around the world also I discovered that
10:23·he was really doing more more pilfering
10:25·than we thought you know we knew that it
10:27·happened but this was more than I
10:28·thought so I discovered quite a few
10:30·things that that I didn't know uh so
10:32·that's half the fun of doing a book you
10:34·know you you do the research and then
10:35·you make discoveries and it's exciting
10:40·I mean that just makes me think of um
10:42·Heinrich schliemann with you know the
10:44·Prime's treasure you know he had his
10:45·wife wear the incredible necklace and
10:47·headdress and you're thinking
10:50·how is that how you know us now in you
10:53·know the modern day we would never dream
10:56·of doing anything even you know putting
10:58·it on a person
10:59·let alone taking it and giving it to
11:01·someone else's kids
11:03·right you are I mean no no I mean we'd
11:06·all be wearing white gloves and making
11:07·sure we don't contaminate the objects or
11:09·no these were different times they were
11:11·really really really different times
·What was something fascinating or surprising that you found out?
11:13·blows my mind it really does
11:16·um so would you say that was the most
11:18·surprising thing when you were
11:19·researching and working on the book or
11:20·was there something else that really
11:21·fascinated or surprised it surprised you
11:23·whilst working on it well I'll tell you
11:25·truth there were quite a few things that
11:26·surprised me one thing one chapter I
11:28·really loved that was a lot of fun doing
11:29·I think is called it came from outer
11:32·space
11:33·now I don't know if you guys have this
11:35·in the UK but we have this Dreadful show
11:37·called Ancient Aliens
11:40·um it's a show it's a series it's a TV
11:42·show which talks about how the Ancient
11:44·Aliens came to earth years ago and and
11:47·stuff like it's Dreadful
11:49·um and so I I decided I had to call my
11:51·my chapter it came from outer space but
11:53·I think a lot of people are going to be
11:54·disappointed it doesn't deal with
11:56·Ancient Aliens there are no spacecrafts
11:58·discussed
12:00·um but some of the objects in two tank
12:01·Common's tomb did in fact come from
12:03·outer space now you're wondering I could
12:06·see a little puzzle look on your face
12:08·um
12:09·there was no iron in Egypt Egypt did not
12:12·have iron it had copper and it had tin
12:15·and it could make bronze which is a
12:16·combination of copper and Tin but it
12:18·didn't have iron right into the comments
12:20·time
12:21·but there were five or six iron objects
12:24·found in two Tech Commons tomb now where
12:27·did they come from they're meteoritic
12:29·they were made out of meteorites so
12:31·meteorites landed there came and then
12:34·somebody pounded out these objects from
12:35·them and some were quite beautiful it's
12:37·a beautiful dagger an iron dagger that
12:39·was to attack I was buried with with a
12:41·rock crystal handle and it's just
12:43·beautiful and it's made out of
12:44·meteoritic iron
12:45·um and he had other objects too and I
12:48·think these were very very magical
12:49·objects because they were so precious
12:51·because they didn't have iron so he was
12:52·buried with six or so meteorite iron so
12:55·that's kind of interesting also see for
12:57·example one doesn't make any sense at
12:58·ultimate he had a set of chisels now
13:01·when I say chisels I mean like workman's
13:03·chisels they're wooden handles with
13:05·metal bits made out of meteoritic iron
13:07·and then not particularly fancy they're
13:10·not worthy of a king they almost look
13:12·like they were a workmans that forgotten
13:13·behind in the Tomb or something but they
13:15·were there in the Tomb so it's kind of
13:17·curious most of the objects are precious
13:18·I mean there's a little Amulet of an eye
13:21·there's a there's a there's a you know
13:22·because a beautiful pectoral thing but
13:24·but this this chisel set puzzles me I
13:27·don't know why he had it he wouldn't
13:28·have used it in real life I'm sure he
13:30·didn't do his own chiseling you know he
13:31·had people within the form but so there
13:33·were lots of things discovered you know
13:35·in the Tomb that are kind of interesting
13:36·that I found you know all kinds of fun
13:38·things discovered amazing and would it
13:41·be plausible to think that that chisel
13:43·set was left behind by someone because I
13:45·know that he died you know unexpectedly
13:46·because he was so young and the tomb was
13:48·sort of put together quickly and I'm
13:50·pretty sure parts of it were you know
13:52·something was reused from an earlier
13:53·thing or from someone else's
13:56·um
13:57·is that plausible that maybe a builder
13:59·did just leave it in there I think so I
14:01·think so I think that there was a there
14:03·must have been a rush to bury him you
14:05·know you he's mummified they didn't get
14:08·him in the Tomb and and all the
14:10·Craftsmen in the country almost were
14:11·working on these things for two Tech
14:13·almonds to them you have to prayer they
14:14·only had 70 days because the Pharaoh has
14:17·to be buried in 70 days that was a
14:18·religious ritual so they've got to get
14:20·all these things all these Treasures so
14:21·they're even borrowing things from other
14:23·tombs they're taking things from out of
14:24·other tombs Royal tombs putting them in
14:26·there things like that um and the
14:28·repurposing things so for example his
14:30·sarcophagus that is buried in the the
14:32·rectangular box I mean you know that's
14:34·that was that was redone from somebody
14:36·else's and even the lid lid is made of a
14:39·different Stone so that the lid cracked
14:41·they tried to fix it they had to do
14:42·another lid so there's all kinds of
14:44·indications of haste and I think these
14:47·chips may have been just left behind by
14:48·the workmen you know let's get out of
14:50·here boys we're done and you'll notice
14:52·you've got a set of chisels
·Was everything documented when the tomb was excavated?
14:54·wow it's incredible is that especially
14:59·because they're moving all of the things
15:00·from one Museum to the other yes have
15:03·this have there been things that have
15:04·turned up that you didn't even know
15:07·were found 100 years ago were the things
15:09·that weren't documented that had
15:12·everything was documented fairly
15:14·carefully Harman Carter when he did the
15:16·excavation set new standards for
15:19·excavators
15:20·he's the first one I believe who
15:22·photographs everything in situ in the
15:25·Tomb before it's moved so that we have a
15:27·complete record of what did it look like
15:28·when he discovered it so every object
15:30·has a little number on it they have a
15:31·little card they'll put a number in
15:32·front of it they photograph everything
15:33·so we know everything that was in the
15:36·two pretty pretty well pretty well so no
15:38·big big surprise of oh we didn't know
15:39·about that but what did happen over the
15:42·course of the years not everything was
15:43·put on exhibition in the Cairo Museum
15:46·some were put in the store rooms for
15:48·example the chisels nobody was
15:49·interested in the show they want to
15:51·store them so a lot of things went went
15:53·missing temporarily they were in store
15:55·rooms they were put away so when
15:56·everything is going over to the Grand
15:58·Museum this new grand Egyptian museum
15:59·there are things that were discovered
16:01·like for example I had never known about
16:03·the armor the suit of armor that he was
16:05·buried because that wasn't on display
16:06·because it's in poor condition or for
16:08·example one thing that's been examined
16:10·now he had something like 30 40 pairs of
16:12·shoes that he that he went to the next
16:14·World with and they're really quite
16:16·interesting and so a separate study has
16:18·been made of the shoes and there's so
16:20·many need I mean you'd love it um he had
16:22·sandals lots of sandals now he was
16:24·buried with sandals on his feet
16:26·they were gold solid gold
16:29·now they're not
16:32·usable they're not practical gold is
16:34·very soft though
16:36·um these were his sandals for eternity
16:38·gold never tarnishes so for the next
16:42·World you want things in Gold so he was
16:44·buried with gold sandals right but he
16:46·had other sandals that had mosaics on
16:48·the bottom
16:49·on the top of the bottom if you know
16:51·what I mean where his foot would touch
16:53·and the Mosaic was of captives his
16:55·enemies so every place he would walk he
16:58·would step on his enemy you know so you
17:00·have these bound Assyrians bound Nubians
17:03·found libyans it shows them all in their
17:05·native Garb and two tank arm would walk
17:08·on them wherever he goes you know so he
17:09·had loads of these sandals and shoes and
17:11·everything like that and it's kind of
17:12·interesting to see you know how they
17:14·made sandals you know by because we're
17:16·moving these sandals now for the first
17:17·time at the Museum people can get their
17:18·hands on who knows about this thing so
17:20·for example there were Reed sandals made
17:21·of reeds that are bundled together tied
17:23·together and they're still beautiful
17:24·elegant
17:25·um but they're just made so minutely uh
17:28·so the loads of things we learn about
17:29·from this by handling by getting them
17:31·out of the cases by finding things in
17:32·the storerooms I mean it's just
17:33·remarkable what we're finding about that
17:35·incredible I'm so excited to read your
17:38·book and it's got new it's got new
17:40·things and and I do go against
17:42·um some of the traditional
17:45·theories about Titan things like that I
17:47·mean one of the things I talk about also
17:48·which which is I think kind of
17:50·interesting is there was this Theory
17:53·that now two ten Commons tomb is very
17:55·small just a couple of rooms because
17:57·they didn't have a long time to build it
17:59·over 20 30 years so it's very modest in
18:02·terms of size
18:03·and one of the theories
18:05·is that his mother was buried behind the
18:07·wall she dies first is buried behind the
18:09·wall and that's plastered over
18:11·um and and there's been a lot of
18:12·discussion about this
18:14·um because when when the when the room
18:16·210 comments paintings were very
18:18·carefully studied recently with Laser
18:21·Technology so that we can get a really
18:23·careful
18:24·um how to say it Topography of the wall
18:26·we know the bumps in the wall we know
18:27·everything about the wall now one of the
18:29·things that's discovered when they did
18:32·this about the wall right
18:34·is that there's a part of the wall
18:36·that's been repainted
18:38·in modern times in modern times meaning
18:42·1920s 1930s
18:45·now how did that happen right now the
18:48·answer is the answer is I think I think
18:50·it's a straightforward answer maybe not
18:52·Howard Carter was an artist
18:54·he started his career as a 17 year old
18:58·artist on an excavation in Egypt and he
19:00·and he was very good at it but he was
19:02·also very bright and they realized he
19:03·had even more Talent than art and he
19:05·became an excavator and he eventually
19:07·became a Chief Inspector for the
19:10·Egyptian Antiquity service so he really
19:11·had lots of skills but he had this
19:14·basics in art right he was an artist
19:16·so what I think happens is the following
19:20·there is a scene on the wall of
19:22·Tutankhamun wearing a kilt
19:24·and this Kilt it was photographed in
19:27·1922
19:29·it has a certain number of pleats it's a
19:31·pleated Kilt and has a number of pleats
19:33·stripes on the Kilt
19:35·1922. if you look at it today
19:39·it's got a different number of pleats
19:41·completely different
19:43·completely different
19:44·and what happened really and what
19:46·happened I think now how does it happen
19:48·right what's going on
19:50·I think yeah I think I think not this is
19:54·this is my suggestion
19:55·I think when Carter was moving things in
19:57·and out of the Tomb he damaged the
19:59·painting
20:00·and then later he painted over it and
20:04·it's got this not only did it paint over
20:05·it though this is kind of cool on the
20:07·walls of the Tomb is mold
20:11·ancient mold three thousand year old
20:13·mold
20:14·when they buried Tutankhamun
20:16·they didn't have time to leave the tomb
20:18·open so the paint could dry
20:20·so it was still while it still had
20:22·moisture in it and mold could grow on it
20:24·so the mold grew on it for maybe a
20:26·couple of years and then dies so there
20:29·are mold spots all over the tomb when
20:31·Howard Carter repainted The Kilt he
20:33·painted fake mold on it so that it
20:36·wouldn't look look new so nobody knew
20:38·about this for like 70 years till a
20:41·scholar got to look close up at it and
20:43·he noticed hey there's a different
20:44·number of stripes on the Kilt so awesome
20:48·yeah there's all kinds of fun
20:49·discoveries this is the kind of thing
20:51·that I like discovering yeah yeah oh
·What is something everyone should know about your book?
20:53·yeah that is so much fun I think my last
20:56·question is what is something that you
20:58·think everybody should know about the
21:00·topic of your book
21:01·I think it's the basic thing I think
21:04·it's that there's loads of new research
21:06·on 210 common it's evolving and he may
21:09·not be the boy King who is fragile never
21:12·went into war any of that all this
21:13·research is helping us paint a much
21:15·better picture of two tank almond
21:18·brilliant thank you so much Bob Now
21:21·Bob's book will be available to purchase

Wholly Guacamole! Thanks so much for alllll the links.

My main question is, just how many of these current and previous (100's of years) discoveries will now have to be reinvestigated and reclassified now that that PhD level 'expert' declared we cannot determine whether a skeleton is a man or a woman. Perhaps everything should now have a gender asterisk *TBD (to be determined).

Many, many moons ago I had a double college major if Spanish and Archaeology. I eventually learned that unless you are the PhD professor, archaeology is no way to fund a mortgage, or any other bills. I did get to work excavating an ancient Mayan city in Central America. I can't wait to read all those links

My pleasure, and thanks for those observations. There are nitwits who think archaeologists are treasure-hunters who pocket all the thousands of tons [sic] of gold and gems just hiding a short distance under the surface. It's really done for the love of the game, as it were.

Winged Scarab Pectoral of Tutankhamun, from Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), Valley of the Kings, West Thebes

This beautiful winged scarab pectoral illustrates the throne name of King Tutankhamun, “Neb- kheprew-re.” The central element is the scarab “Khepri” made of a fine piece of lapis lazuli, and three strokes of plural “sign in hieroglyphs” below it. Between the forelegs of the scarab, the risen sun disk “Re” is depicted.

It is made of a clear red carnelian set in gold, which represents what, in nature, was the ball of mud and dung containing its eggs that was rolled forward by the beetle. Beneath the plural strokes “sign in hieroglyphs” is a basket shape “Neb” inlaid with turquoise.

The wings that are often added to the scarab represent Re, the god of the rising sun. They sweep round to form an almost complete circle, enveloping the royal name and offering it divine protection.

Khepri is the god of creation, rebirth and the rising of the sun. The scarab pushes the sun disc above the horizon and sits on a neb (i.e., basket) sign―signifying its divine nature―supported by three strokes of plural sign, perhaps meaning ‘triple.’
