Breaking: Pelosi's home archdiocese republishes USCCB statement
American Papist ^ | August 26, 2008 | Thomas Peters

Posted on 08/26/2008 2:02:16 PM PDT by NYer

Over at the news section of the San Francisco Archdiocese (Pelosi's home diocese), instead of a personal statement by Archbishop Niederauer, they've chosen to republish the USCCB press release from yesterday:
"The Catholic Church is a Pro-Life Church."
It's something.

update: Rocco reports:
"San Francisco church spokesman Maurice Healy told Whispers earlier today that Archbishop George Niederauer would publish his response to Pelosi in a Friday column for the archdiocesan weekly, Catholic San Francisco."

This is better than nothing for Archbishop Niederauer of San Francisco.

Archbishop Niederauer of San Francisco would simply “nuance” through this embarassing episode then move on. Carry on folks, nothing to see here.

I was wondering as I watched Kennedy at the DNC convention yesterday, how a man raised in the Catholic church, having learned whatever he did of Catholicism in the pre-Vatican II era, can be approaching his death and not repent of several of the positions he has advocated for so long.

I started searching on Catholic-Hierarchy.org. I only made it to the Archdiocese of Chicago, alphabetically. I will look more this evening.

The Catholic Church is engaged in a terrible battle with the forces of darkness period. From within and without. A good priest told me once that several years ago the papal nuncio who was responsible for nominating bishops was himself a member of the lavender mafia. He nominated similar fellows or those sympathetic. Pope Benedict has his work cut out for him.

I have to go to a “wedding” this weekend of a close relative—the woman is from SF and the man has succumbed to the propaganda. They were actually married a month ago but because their destination wedding state required a minister or a judge (judges not available for the beach) they are being “married” by a friend. I'm going to have to chew through my tongue and exit as quickly as possible.

**The Catholic Church, whether it knows it or not, is engaged in a terrible battle with the forces of darkness in California, especially in Pelosi’s backyard, San Francisco. SF has made it abundantly clear that Christian theology is “hate-speech”, any conscientious dissent is “discrimination” and anyone who supports traditional marriage is a “bigot”.

This election, Obama’s support for infanticide, and Pelosi’s statement on human life, may well be the flash point for a great spiritual war....

I pray for America.**

It’s scary. All Christians need to stand with the Catholic Church on this and stop fighting each other.

I join you in my prayers.

And Pelosi has now escalated things. Her spokesman Brendan Daly (an Irish Catholic name if there ever was one) said:

“The Speaker is the mother of five children and seven grandchildren and fully appreciates the sanctity of family. She was raised in a devout Catholic family who often disagreed with her pro-choice views.

“After she was elected to Congress, and the choice issue became more public as she would have to vote on it, she studied the matter more closely. Her views on when life begins were informed by the views of Saint Augustine, who said: ‘…the law does not provide that the act [abortion] pertains to homicide, for there cannot yet be said to be a live soul in a body that lacks sensation…’ (Saint Augustine, On Exodus 21.22)

“While Catholic teaching is clear that life begins at conception, many Catholics do not ascribe to that view. The Speaker agrees with the Church that we should reduce the number of abortions. She believes that can be done by making family planning more available, as well as by increasing the number of comprehensive age-appropriate sex education and caring adoption programs.

“The Speaker has a long, proud record of working with the Catholic Church on many issues, including alleviating poverty and promoting social justice and peace.”

Now the bishops have a clear choice. She has thrown down the gauntlet. This is an arrogant, direct slap in their faces. If they do not move to discipline her, she wins.

I know they would like to finesse this by insisting that she should voluntarily abstain from Communion, I know that they fear a media backlash with them becoming the villains if her bishop were to excommunicate her. I understand all that.

But this is an act of deliberate escalation, a deliberate provocation, a bluffingly arrogant spitting in their faces because she is confident the media have her back on this.

If the bishops fold on this, if her bishops fails to hold her accountable, they have given away the store, squandered any hope of regaining any authority.

This is a krisis moment, a moment of decision not unlike the run-up to World War II when Hitler tested the resolve of the West and Chamberlain capitulated.

It did not eliminate the necessity of fighting a costly war, it only delayed that necessity and made the fight all the more bloody.

Until now, I cut the bishops some slack, hoping that the sharp scolding from Chaput, Egan,Wuerl etc. might be enough.

But now it seems like the ball is in Niederauer’s court. She has poke her thumb in his eye, calculatingly, arrogantly, banking on timid appeasement.

Sadly, I am not optimistic that Niederauer will rise to the challenge. It’s a sad day, because the statements by Egan, Chaput et alii gave me some cause for hope.

Surprise me, Archbishop Niederauer, surprise me. We need to beg God for the grace, for once, of courage on the part of our bishops, particularly the archibishop of San Francisco.

I share your view of the USCCB, but I am think the bishops know they no longer can treat abortion as just one of many “social justice” issues. The internet has unified orthodox Catholics and made it tougher for the Catholic Church to let pro-choice “Catholic” politicans off the hook. We have to keep the pressure on...it appears to be working.

I posted this on another thread but I'd like to repeat it here.

Somethin's a-happenin' here folks. I'm convinced of it. This outburst of episcopal assertiveness which we've witnessed over the past several days has come completely out of the blue and is in such contrast to previous timidity and silence. This can only be due to Divine grace. Yes, I know some of you won't be satisfied until we have a public burning at the stake, but this is real progress.

Call me nuts but I believe that the Holy Spirit is at work here and I believe it is because we've flushed out the homosexuals from the seminaries and priesthood. Well maybe not totally but we've certainly flushed a large number as a result of the abuse scandals. I believe this cancer on the priesthood was a huge impediment to the dispensation of grace in the Catholic Church in this country and was the cause of so many of our problems. Be grateful.

I think we're now starting to see the fruits of that painful but so necessary house cleaning which has been taking place over the last several years and while I'm on a roll, let me also say that I believe the freeing up of the Tridentine Mass may also have contributed to what I can only call an "outpouring of grace" on our bishops.

Long may it continue.

They are now actually starting to resemble.....*gasp*.........shepherds!!

No doubt the Holy Spirit is behind this but I'm sure the bishops were also motivated by the recent visit of our Holy Father.
